An exciting new brew from Dundee:
Our newest beer to the Dundee family is Summer Shandy, a light and refreshing blend of lager beer and lemonade. There are many theories describing how the Shandy style was invented. Having grown up in the suburbs of Upstate New York in the early 90's, I like to think it's a more sophisticated take on the classic Brass Monkey. A fellow brewer on the Dundee team, an old German-American, who has watched more than his fair share of PBS, was quick to interject and inform me the Shandy's true origins go back much farther than that.
The Shandy-style, known as the Radler in Germany dating back to as early as 1912, is a blend of lager and lemon soda or lemonade that was designed as a thirst-quenching drink. Radler, which literally means "cyclist" in German, alludes to this refreshing brew's reputation as a summer sports drink. So much for the Brass Monkey theory... but therein lies the foundation for Dundee's Summer Shandy character.
Summer Shandy is a great warm weather, easy-drinking beer that goes great with, well, anything having to do with summer. It's the perfect refresher after mowing the lawn or a long bike ride and the perfect accompaniment for a day at the beach or backyard BBQ. For me, I'd have this beer waiting for me in the cooler at the trailhead after a day of riding some single track mountain bike trails.
