From Rogue:
This is a season of big changes for Rogue Farms. For the first time, we are swapping out one variety of our GYO hops and replacing it with a new one.
Gone are the five acres of Newport hops. We pulled them out in February. They served us well for many years, but John wanted something with a stronger aroma profile.
The new variety is the Yaquina Hop. Medium intensity and spicy, with notes of pine and grapefruit. It's named for Yaquina Bay, the home of the Rogue Brewery and House of Spirits.
For now, the Yaquina rhizomes are growing in a greenhouse. As they get bigger, we'll expose them to longer periods of daylight and outdoor temperatures. This slow transition from greenhouse to Hopyard produces stronger rhizomes for planting. That's expected in May.
If all goes well, our new variety will be ready for picking by the fall of 2014.
