Thanks you to Allison for sending the latest release from Shock Top for me to try, and for the cool wooden six-pack carrier it arrived in. This new brew is part of the seasonal collection for Shock Top and it was just released into the markets last week.
If you think you already know what Shock Top tastes like, you’ll definitely be surprised by this new offering. Shock Top Honeycrisp Apple Wheat begins with a Belgian-style wheat ale, and takes it to a level beyond the traditional wit with a surprising blend. Coming to the party to join the unfiltered Belgian-style wheat ale, the brewers at Shock Top have added in sweet apple cider. That blend alone would make it interesting and refreshing, but to make it even more interesting, Honeycrisp Apple Wheat also adds in a touch of spice and it’s finished with Belgian candi syrup.
So how does it taste? Well before you build up any pre-conceived notions here, this beer is very drinkable and has a really refreshing flavor. The apple flavors dominate the subtle Belgian-Wheat character or yeast flavors, but they’re still in there. If you’re expecting apple-pie spices or holiday mulling spices, you’re thinking way too strong. The spices in this beer are very subtle and very late on the palate.
Honeycrisp is easy drinking and it has a tart enough finish to make you want more. I was surprised at the 5.2% ABV since it drinks much lighter than that. I finished mine while it was still cold, but I suspect some of the spicy flavors may come on a little more at warmer temps. My only complaint so far is that this beer would be a perfect late spring/early summer release rather than January, however it will be available through the end of July so I guess that covers it.
Shock Top Honeycrisp Apple Wheat is available in six and twelve packs as well as draught so be sure to try this one for yourself. Also keep in mind this is just one of the new interesting flavors Shock Top has in the works, so stay tuned for more. For more info check out www.shocktopbeer.com.
