Nøgne Ø just released some info this morning that they have discovered an enzyme that breaks down gluten, and that all future batches of their “Bitter” will be brewed using this enzyme. This will place Nøgne Ø alongside Widmer’s Omission gluten-free beers by using a method that breaks down gluten rather than brewing them with grains that do not contain gluten in the first place (like Harvester Brewing). Nøgne Ø has stopped short of calling or certifying this beer as “gluten-free” so far. This from Nøgne Ø: We have come across an enzyme which is supposed to break down gluten. Bitter Batch #874 is the first to be brewed this way, and we plan to brew all subsequent Bitter batches like this.
Porter batch #876 is also brewed with the before mentioned gluten reducing enzyme. Please note that we do not claim that these beers are gluten free. We do not have the means to do the required analysis. We hope that individuals with gluten intolerance will be able to enjoy these beers!
We are happy to announce that we have come across an enzyme which is supposed to break down gluten. At this time we have started using this enzyme in Bitter and Porter. The first Porter batch brewed like this is #876, and the first Bitter is #874. All subsequent batches of these two beers will be brewed with this enzyme. Being a small brewery, we do not have the means to get all analysis done (or even to keep up to date with the current legislation) in order to determine whether these beers are gluten free or have lower levels of gluten. As such we do not claim that these beers are gluten free.
