Good news for brewers in the state of VA. Senate Bill 604 (allowing for on-site sales of beer @ the brewery) and House Bill 359 (allowing brewery space leasing) both take effect Sunday. Details from NewsAdvance:
Two new laws go into effect Sunday that change the way craft breweries in Virginia can operate.
One law, Senate Bill 604, allows a brewery to sell the beer it brews for on-site consumption. Previously, breweries could only give away free one-ounce samples or add a restaurant where the beer could be sold. It could be sold for off-site use.
The other law to go into effect Sunday, House Bill 359, allows brewhouses to lease space to smaller-scale breweries.
The legislation had a bonus impact for Smack. Because Blue Mountain Brewery and Blue Mountain Barrel House are separate breweries, even though he and others have a stake in both, they had to go through a distributor to move beer between the two, he said.
To go from one Nelson County brewery to another, he had to ship it to Richmond, let it sit for 24 hours, then ship it to the other brewhouse. The two signed an agreement to sell the beer at each site.
