Follow the twitter feed from bottom to top and the big news coming from Lagunitas is that they will be building a 250bbl ROLEC Brewhouse in Chicago…This low-key Twitter-press-release is certainly the opposite of what New Belgium & Sierra Nevada did for their east-cast facility announcements….but this is one of the big news stories of the year in #beer & #craftbeer!
Just a few Updates 4/10…Here’s a photo of the space and a few more details:
The photo shows Karen Hamilton, sister of Lagunitas owner Tony Magee in the new space. Karen & Tony are originally from Chicago so their choice makes sense. Details are also coming out that they will invest about $16 Million into the new facility which will be a duplicate of their Petaluma CA facility and is expected to reach 600,000bbl capacity.
Magee and Hamilton's hometown. Lagunitas has signed a five-year lease on a former steel factory at 18th and Rockwell streets, in the Douglas Park neighborhood, behind a film studio and sound stage. The lease includes multiple options that should keep the brewery there for at least 20 years, Magee said. (Full details from Chicago Tribune)
And this from Lagunitas:
We are building a second brewing facility in Chicago Illinois on the grounds of the Cine-Space Movie Soundstage complex in the Douglas Park neighborhood. It will have a ROLEC-built 250 barrel kettle and 200,000 barrels of initial capacity. This will be built in 2013.
By building a second brewery in Chicago, we’ll be adding capacity closer to where it will be enjoyed and we believe that the future of Craft beer is local, and we want to be a part of that future.
