WILK Friday BeerBuzz–22 Apr 2011 (Ballast Point Big Eye IPA)

WILKFridayBeerbuzz3Sometimes a really enjoyable beer just sneaks up on you.  Sometimes a little brother is overshadowed by his big brother, but still no less amazing.  Today we sampled the little brother beer on the Friday BeerBuzz and it definitely snuck up on us in a good way.  Now we’re all aware of Ballast Point Sculpin…and we’re all aware it’s a great brew.  But how many of you have stopped to sample Ballast Point’s Big Eye IPA?…well you should.

Sculpin IPA
Big Eye IPA comes to us out of San Diego, CA from brewmaster Yussef Cherney.  Even more interesting is that the origins of Big Eye go back to a home brew that Yussef did in the 90’s that became a regular on his home tap system and ultimately became the basis for the recipe he uses today.  Big Eye is an easy-drinking 7% ABV and 80 IBU brew that uses predominantly Centennial hops for bittering, finishing and dry-hopping….and Centennial is big in the nose and big on your tongue.

I also really enjoy the fact that not only did Ballast Point start out as a home brew supply shop in 1992, but that they also have a great background in yeast culturing and do a lot of work in distilled spirits as well….all things near and dear to my beer-loving-heart.

Be sure to get out and try Ballast Point Big Eye IPA.
Thanks
to  Nancy, John, Joe, & Bosco for yet another fun Friday.
