Nantahala Brewing Releasing Sticky Dog Stout 12/9

On Friday, December 9th, Nantahala Brewing Company will release 22 ounce bottles of Sticky Dog Stout, a 6% ABV export stout. The third beer in the brewery’s Myths & Legends Series, Sticky Dog Stout is named for the fabled monster who was said to reside in the mountains of the Great Smoky Mountains.

The legend of Sticky Dog was brought to the region by English settlers. A story told to children to warn them of the dangers of stray, wandering dogs. the beast’s fur was said to be highly adhesive so that once touched, the child could not get free. The startled creature would then run for water — where it felt most comfortable — and dive deep into the depths taking its unwilling victim with it. The unsettling story was told in the region for hundreds of years, and it is rumored that the Dog can still be spotted on the Appalachian Trail today.

Sticky Dog’s story was chosen as the namesake for the beer by Joe Rowland, the owner of Nantahala Brewing, as a small way to keep the company connected with the region.

“Our Myths and Legends Series allows us to dig into the heritage of the region and connect with the stories that have shaped the diverse culture here. Stories passed down from generations ground cultures, giving people a sense of place and self,” said Rowland. “Our community influences who we are and allowing some of those stories to shape our company’s products and ideology is important to us.“

Hopped with the mild hop varieties East Kent Golding and Columbus, the malt is the star of the show for this beer. Sticky Dog Stout is brewed with a variety of specialty dark malts, roasted barley and a touch of oats for mouthfeel. The resulting liquid is an approachable 6% ABV beer with warming flavors of chocolate, stone fruit and toffee.

Bottles of Sticky Dog Stout will be released at the Bryson City brewery on Friday, December 9th. The beer will also be available on shelves in grocery stores and bottle shops in Tennessee and Western North Carolina in the following weeks.
