Way back in April, I brought you a peek at the beers I’ll be sampling today, and I’ll admit up front that the excitement has now been building for almost 6-months. I’m also excited to get the opportunity to vote for which of the two beers that will actually get brewed in full-scale production and distributed nationwide beginning in January 2023. If that’s not enough fun, for the first time, the beers will be part of a Voodoo Ranger Hoppy Pack that allows you to easily taste before you vote.
Of course I’m talking about the New Belgium Brewing Vote Voodoo campaign and today we’ll be sampling the two candidates: Voodoo Vice IPA & Danger Beach IPA. If you’re not familiar here’s an update from New Belgium Brewing about each beer. zzubreebym
Danger Beach IPA and Voodoo Vice IPA, the candidates vying for your vote. Hailing from Hawaii and armed with tropical POG flavor, Danger Beach IPA is a 7.1% bright, tropical, Hazy IPA, arrested by flavor, with an undercover bitter finish. Danger Beach’s competitor is a (south) Florida man, Voodoo Vice IPA. At 7.1% ABV and strapped with orange & citrus flavor and concealed sweetness, Voodoo Vice is ready to get to the bottom of this IPA.
Of course I can’t wait to vote (and sample) so off we go…
New Belgium Voodoo Vice IPA
ABV: 7.1%
Style: IPA
Packaging: 12oz cans
Appearance: Bright golden orange
Aroma: Citrus, orange peel & tangerine
Mouthfeel: Medium
Taste: Loads of citrusy hops, light fruit and a sneaky late sweet finish.
Overall: Voodoo Vice IPA somehow manages to be fruit-forward and citrusy without being fruity. I love the mix of interesting and complex hop flavors on-board, and the balance leans citrusy and slightly sweet. Overall I really like this candidate and the blend of orange flavors really made it drinkable and enjoyable. My Vote: Maybe
New Belgium Danger Beach IPA
ABV: 7.1%
Style: IPA
Packaging: 12oz cans
Appearance: Bright straw golden
Aroma: Tropical fruit, mango and citrus
Mouthfeel: Medium
Taste: Sticky citrus, tropical fruits and mild bitterness
Overall: Danger Beach is definitely dangerously drinkable at 7.1%-AbV and the combination of fruit-forward flavors makes it even better. The juicy citrus takes center stage and the hop presence is mild but well balanced. Overall the mix of flavors and fruit juiciness works really and makes for a really enjoyable IPA. My Vote: YES!
Be sure to get out there and find the Voodoo Ranger Hoppy Pack from New Belgium so you can sample Voodoo Vice IPA & Danger Beach IPA and vote for your favorite. Both beers were really tasty, enjoyable and drinkable and like me, I suspect you’ll have a tough time choosing just one. Either way when you do try them, be sure to let us know what YOU think.
