If you’ve been following along on mybeerbuzz.com, you’ll notice I also cover cider, mead and now the new hard seltzer varieties hitting the market. With that in mind, I’m excited to bring you a first seltzer sampling on the website.
Hard seltzers are now showing up in many of the beer stores I frequent, and we’re seeing more and more coming from small independent breweries as well. Some are made using traditional malt-based sugars and some are not. Many offer a lower calorie count and some are even fermented to be sugar-free.
Today we’ll be sampling the seltzers from a new fall variety pack from Perrin Brewing’s Clear Coast Seltzers-- in Comstock Park, MI. These seltzers are part of the Oskar Blues CanArchy family and they will be part of a new variety pack that was released on Oct 10th at the Perrin Pub and in Michigan distribution.
The Perrin Fall-Inspired Hard Seltzer Variety Pack is a 12-pack of hard seltzers in three different fall flavors: Cran-Raspberry, Dark Cherry and Grape Pomegranate. These seltzers come under the Michigan-crafted Clear Coast brand from Perrin and this is how they describe the seltzers:
Inspired by the coastline of Michigan - the longest freshwater coastline in the world - Clear Coast is a crisp, clean, pure hard seltzer made with fresh water and hints of tantalizing fruit flavors. A light, bubbly beverage option, Clear Coast (5% ABV) is 100 calories, low carb, low sugar and gluten-removed.
It’s certainly different sampling a seltzer than a beer, but I’m sure there are many things in common, so off we go.
All three seltzers have a common look and sparkling mouthfeel. They all finish crisp and clean and they are all really drinkable and thirst quenching. These seltzers feel more carbonated than a traditional beer and they are lighter bodied than even a lighter beer. These specific seltzers have 100 calories per 12oz serving and they hit 5%-AbV, so I’d place them in comparison to the sessionable lower calorie beer category.
With all of that said, each seltzer is differentiated by their fruit flavors. These fruit flavors are subtle in each case, but really pleasant. The Cran-Raspberry flavor is a bit tart with a more prominent raspberry flavor than cranberry for me. The Dark Cherry flavor has a really drinkable slightly sweet dark cherry flavor that reminded me of cherry-flavored ice cream from my childhood, and the Grape Pomegranate flavor is a really interesting combination of flavors. I tasted mostly grape, but I’ll admit that I’m not sure I drink enough pomegranate to recognize it. The grape combination does work well and as much as I loved the Dark Cherry, this flavor was probably my favorite.
The Perrin Clear Coast Fall-Inspired Hard Seltzer Variety Pack is available now so be sure to get out there and try these hard seltzer flavors for yourself. And when you do try them, be sure to let us know what YOU think.
