As someone who constantly monitors the new beers hitting our beer shelves, I’m in a unique position to spot trends. Over the last 8-months (or more), I’ve picked up on a new trend, and today’s beer fits squarely into that category.
That category is something I’d call “healthy” beer or “fitness” beer and today’s beer comes to us from Abita Brewing in Abita Springs, LA. The beer is called Hop 99 and Abita is calling it a “guilt-free IPA.” Hop 99, of course, has 99-calories and 2.7g of carbs per 12oz serving; and at 4.2%-AbV it’s sessionable as well.
With all of that in mind, I can’t wait to see how it tastes, so off we go. Hop 99 pours a bright golden color with loads of grapefruit and citrus in the aromas, due in part to the Mosaic and Citra hops on board (two of my favorites). If you’re looking for anything that indicates a low-cal sessionable IPA, it’s not in the wonderful aromas. That same hoppy grapefruit presence launches the flavor profile of the beer and the mouthfeel is light and drinkable. The balance of malt and hops leans toward the hops (this is a good thing) and the beer finishes crisp and clean. Again if you’re looking for some indication of low-cal, low-carb or low ABV, you also won’t find it in the flavors.
Overall Abita Hop 99 is a really drinkable and enjoyable IPA that just happens to be low-calorie, low-carb and low-AbV. I think IPA lovers and “health” beer lovers will both find something they like in this beer and it is available now in 12oz cans as well as kegs. Be sure to try Hop 99 for yourself…and when you do, be sure to let us know what YOU think.
