WILK Friday BeerBuzz–7 Jan 2011 (Rochefort 10)

WILKFridayBerbuzz8It’s a bittersweet day on the Friday BeerBuzz.  While our featured beer of the day is an amazing beer, it’s troubling to know what’s gone on at the Abbey Saint Remy (Rochefort Trappist Brewery) over the holiday break  If you haven’t followed along, the Trappist Abbey brewery where Rochefort is brewed had a fairly serious fire on 12/29 that damaged portions of the brewery.  You can check out my posts and updates on the topic HERE, HERE or even HERE.

Thankfully, the brewery will survive and the beer will continue to be produced and packaged.  So far we’ve seen no shortage but stay tuned for a post later this morning on where you can get Rochefort beer in our area.

imageWe always seem to love beers based on the brewing style “Belgian Quad” on the Friday BeerBuzz.  Think back to Ommegang Three Philosophers, Breaker Brewing Belsnickler or even St Bernardus Christmas Ale….and you’ll see we love quads.  So what better way to pay tribute to our fallen beer comrades at Rochefort than to choose a true Trappist Belgian Quad.  Trappist beers are among the rarest and most flavorful historic beers available today.  Rochefort 10 is a classic among beer lovers and as always, I strongly recommend you try one.  They are a little more expensive than many mainstream beers (about $10 for an 11.3oz bottle), BUT Rochefort 10 is over 11% ABV, it’s well worth the price, it’s a very special beer to toast your friends and family and of course it’s a fitting tribute to Rochefort as they recover form the fire.

Get out and get some Trappist Rochefort 10 for yourself.  You won’t be sorry.
Thank you
to John, Nancy, Joe & Bosco for yet another fun Friday.

  9. Trappist beers are some of the best. I was wondering when you guys would do one. I knew with St Bernardus you were close and i know how hard they are to get so I thank you for featuring one. Sorry to hear about the fire but this is a fitting tribute.

  21. Can't go wrong with Rochefort, or any of the true Trappist beers. I've not heard the show, but maybe there should be a "if you like this, try this" sort of blurb each show. That way if you're not lucky enough to have the MBB weekly beer, you can get something close to it.

For those interested in historic beers, Dogfish Head and Yards come to mind. Dogfish Head has brews like Midas Touch and Chateau Jiahu which were developed based on trace ingredients found on pottery vessels. Yards turns to Colonial America for its brews - with Thomas Jefferson Tavern Ale, George Washington Porter, and Poor Richard's Tavern Spruce Ale - from recipes used by or known to the Founding Fathers. (The beers were/are brewed for Philadelphia's City Tavern, hence why Tavern comes up in the names.)

  22. Thanks Tom...all good ideas and all good beers. I've really enjoyed the stories associated with these beers as much as the brews themselves. I think the story of Midas Touch alone was one of the motivating factors for me loving craft beer back in the early days. We actually have the Yards variety case in the basement now, and as as much as I'll admit I still struggle with the Spruce, the rest are solid beers in fine Yards tradition...

by the way you'll definitely want to tune in to an upcoming show or two...
