About Triple Rock Brewery

Innovation has always been the name of the game for Triple Rock Brewery, from its opening 38 years ago to the present day. Located at 1920 Shattuck Avenue in downtown Berkeley, California, Triple Rock was the 5th brewpub in America. Opened by Berkeley natives, brothers John Martin and Reid Martin in 1986, Triple Rock was at the cusp of a burgeoning new segment of the beer industry with craft beers just starting to attract a cult following. Triple Rock Brewery remains a flagship taphouse on the SF Bay Area beer scene with its original 7-barrel brewing system still in full action and helmed by Head Brewer Jeff Kimpe (via sister brewery Drake's and Pyramid Brewing).

What started as a three-beer operation at Triple Rock Brewery (Red Rock Ale, Pinnacle Pale Ale, Black Rock Porter) led to an expansion of the taphouse at year 10 (1996) and upping the ante from three brews to 10 beers on tap. The multi-tap model was catching on across California and Triple Rock Brewery's success inspired John Martin to open the multi-tap and pizza haven Jupiter (1992) just a few blocks down Shattuck Ave. Martin went on to purchase Drake's Brewing (2008). In 2016, Triple Rock expanded to include a vast new space adjacent to the taphouse called The Richter Room, which was named that because the entire building above the first floor can move 24 inches in any direction on massive base isolators visible in The Richter Room.

Triple Rock was the first brewpub in the United States to use custom made cylindrical-conical fermentation tanks and full brew-sized serving tanks where beer flows from the brewery straight to the bar's tap handles. With zero kegging involved in their operation, Triple Rock's beers have always been as fresh as they could be and poured directly from the tanks to consumers' glasses. In 1986, the Martin brothers hired Michael Lewis, the Head of Brewing Sciences at UC Davis, to help design their brewing system. The brewery was built by JV Northwest who were known for manufacturing premium wine tanks, and the first complete brewery they ever built was for Triple Rock Brewery. When Triple Rock opened only four other brewpubs were in business at the time (Buffalo Bills, Mendocino Brewing, Yakima Brewing, and Manhattan Brewing); other than Buffalo Bills they are all gone now and Triple Rock is the only brewpub with the original owners still running their taphouse.
