Avery’s Ales of Antiquity Series Will Span Three Centuries in 2020

Boulder, Colo. January 14, 2020 Avery Brewing Company, a revolutionary craft brewery in Boulder for over 25 years, will continue their unique Ales of Antiquity Series in 2020. Travis Rupp, Avery’s Beer Archaeologist and a CU Classics professor, will lead the research, recipe creation, and production of three beers from three different centuries.

The 2020 Ales of Antiquity Series will build off the success of the 2019 releases. Last year, Rupp and Avery released two historic brews, bringing the current total of the series to nine beers. In October, Rupp recreated the original India Pale Ale based on his research in both the United Kingdom and India. The 1752 India Pale Ale is a Tap Room Rarity available now in the Avery to-go cooler and on draft at their Tap Room and Restaurant.

Earlier in 2019, Rupp’s research into the Revolutionary War led him to brew the George Washington Porter. Foregoing the more meticulously documented brews from the time period, Rupp ventured into notes and references to a porter that George Washington was known to have purchased, consumed, and appreciated. Continuing with the theme of presidential brews, Rupp plans to kick off 2020 with a beer from the estate of Thomas Jefferson.

Monticello, a Persimmon Wheat Ale from the nineteenth century, will be the next member of the Ales of Antiquity series. Named after Thomas Jefferson’s famous estate, this historic brew is based on Rupp’s extensive research conducted at the estate itself, where well-kept estate archives detail the brewing projects at Monticello. Rupp’s research indicates that Thomas Jefferson was interested in brewing, and that he hoped to develop a brewing facility at Monticello. However, the beer was not brewed by America’s third president. Rather, it was brewed by enslaved peoples on his estate — most notably Peter Hemings. Though Thomas Jefferson’s plans to brew on a larger scale never came to fruition, the estate produced a variety of ales.

Avery Brewing Co. will host the traditional Ales of Antiquity dinner for Monticello at their Tap Room and Restaurant on Wednesday, February 19th at 7:00pm. At the dinner, guests will sample multiple variations of the Monticello brew, and will hear from Rupp on the history of brewing at Monticello. In addition to Monticello, Rupp’s 2020 plans include resurrecting two beers from earlier centuries. This summer, Rupp hopes to develop the beer enjoyed by Roman infantry in Britain along Hadrian’s Wall during the second century CE. Then later in the year, Rupp hopes to recreate a beer from the nearly 400-year-old Vasa Shipwreck, which sank just outside of Stockholm in 1628.
