Chocolate-Inspired Beer Benefitting Disaster Relief for Puerto Rico and Hot Sauce-Fermented Beer Will Make Their Debut at Second Self’s Five-Year Anniversary Party on October 12

Local Atlanta brewery Second Self Beer Company announces two new collaborative beers joining their line-up, both of which will first debut at their five-year anniversary party at the Westside taproom (1317 Logan Cir NW) on Saturday, October 12 from noon-10pm!

El Velorio, which translates to ‘The Wake,’ is a collaboration with two local businesses also celebrating an anniversary this month: Puerto Rican pop-up restaurant My Abuelas and coffee roaster Slow Wave Coffee. The three have teamed up to create a hot chocolate-inspired beer made with beans from Julian Coffee Roasters and Cortes Sweet Chocolate, named in reference to the Puerto Rican custom of serving hot chocolate at funerals. A portion of proceeds from each beer sold will go towards benefitting disaster relief for the country.

The can’s label was created by local SCAD student, Maite Nazario (@maitexnazario). Designed to tell a story, the artwork features a black and white panel illustrating the devastation of Hurricane Maria, the fatal storm that swept through Puerto Rico in September of 2017, set against a contrasting section showcasing the country’s resurrection in lively color.

A blow-up heart art installment similar to that on the can’s label will be set up at the anniversary party, and guests will have the opportunity to purchase a flower to place upon it, each one symbolizing the number of people who lost their lives to Hurricane Maria. Following the party, Second Self will carry the remaining supply of this beer at their taproom and will sell some in limited distribution in Georgia, South Carolina and potentially Puerto Rico.

The second beer, East Meets West, is a wheat beer collaboration with Pulp Small Batch Fermented Hot Sauce, made locally in Atlanta. This beer is the first of a three-part series, and two additional taproom releases, an IPA, Hop, Hop, Heat, and a kvass beer, Emma and the Spicy Boyz, will debut at a later date. East Meets West is based on Second Self’s flagship, Thai Wheat, and is co-fermented with habanada peppers that are grown in Georgia and contain citrusy flavor and no heat, along with the unique yeast that Pulp has cultivated over time that will be incorporated in all three beers. Each release within this series will be available on tap at the brewery for a limited time.

Attendees to the all-day anniversary party can also expect to sample 30 different beer offerings, including additional collaborations from friends of Second Self, and enjoy bites available for purchase from local food vendors. Three different ticketing options, General Admission, VIP and Designated Driver, are available for purchase on Eventbrite prior to the anniversary party and at the door day-of.
