In March of 1989 (30 years ago!), Iceland’s government ended 74 years of prohibition in the country – nearly 60 years after prohibition ended in the United States! Since then, Iceland has been making waves in the art of brewing craft beer and there’s been a huge rise of microbreweries across the country crafting and championing new Icelandic ales.
To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the end of prohibition in Iceland, see below a few unique beer experiences you can have in Iceland, as told by Icelandair employees, in case it’s a fit for your readers.
· Take a Beer Bath – Jón Skafti Kristjánsson: Marketing Director, Icelandair
o At the Bjorbodin Beer Spa, you can lie in a bathtub for 25 minutes, filled with beer, water, hops and yeast. After that you go into a relaxation room for another 25 minutes. This treatment claims to be both cleansing for the skin and have a positive effect on your health.
· Sample Beer From A Geothermal Brewery – Ásgeir Einarsson: Digital Business Development, Icelandair (Ásgeir also brews his own beer at home)
o Ásgeir suggests driving to Reykjadalur and hike up to the hot springs with a couple of good beers and take a bath in the warm water, enjoying a cold beer amongst the breathtaking scenery. Afterwards, visit Ölverk in Hveragerði, and enjoy the samples of some great beers from their geothermal brewery.
· Visit the Top Beer Bars in Iceland – Jón Skafti Kristjánsson: Marketing Director, Icelandair & Ásgeir Einarsson: Digital Business Development, Icelandair
o In terms of craft beer, the best places to visit are all within walking distance of each other: Skúli Craftsbar, MicroBar, and Mikkeller & Friends. Each offers a unique beer experience.
Icelandair has joined the ever-growing beer-crafting landscape in Iceland, recently launching its own onboard beer: Snæbjört (pronounced sny-be-ert). The beer is inspired by Icelandic winter light and provides passengers with a unique chance to celebrate onboard this season. Named after the lovely glow of the Icelandic snow, the pale ale possesses a light gold color which aims to celebrate the snowy season and the glimmers of light that manage to illuminate the Icelandic darkness.
