Portland, OR (Dec. 26, 2018) Folks at Portland’s Wayfinder Beer woke up to an extra -- and extra-special -- present under the tree this morning, in the form of some major-league props from some of Oregon’s most vaunted beer experts. In the New School beer blog’s annual industry poll ‘The Best of the Year in Beer 2018’, published Wednesday, Wayfinder walked with a trifecta of top state-wide honors: ‘Best Brewpub’; ‘Best Brew.er’ for brewmaster Kevin Davey; and “Brewery of the Year”.
This year’s poll featured input from “a group of 40 beer writers, beer buyers, bottleshop owners, cicerones, dis.tributors, documentarians and award-winning home-brewers,” according to the blog post. Ezra-Johnson Gree.nough founded the Portland-based blog, widely considered the top online hub for beer news in Oregon, in 2010.
“What fabulous set of honors,” said Wayfinder co-founder Charlie Devereux. “These mean so much because they’re voted on by the people who understand our industry and scene the best.”
In addition to the top nods, Wayfinder’s Terrifico Pils (brewed in collaboration with Modern Times and Heater Allen breweries) tied for second place in the “Beer of the Year” category. Johnson-Greenough noted that five Wayfinder beers were nominated for “Best of” judging, tied for the most of any brewery.
Voters also chose “The Resurgence of Classic German Styles of Beer” -- a Wayfinder focus -- as top trend of the year. “Craft Lagers” was the runner-up.
In his commentary, Johnson-Greenough also praised the brewery’s “ambiance/décor”, “killer” food and “push.ing of boundaries while still remaining true to the spirit of early industrial brewing tradition.”
Wayfinder is the brainchild of Charlie Devereux (co-founder of Double Mountain Brewery), Matthew Jacobson (co-founder/owner of Sizzle Pie, Quality Bar, and Relapse Records) and Rodney Muirhead (co-founder/owner of Podnah’s Pit and La Taq). Our mission: to bring simple and authentic pleasures of the highest quality to the Rose City and beyond.
