Against the Grain Brewery Awarded Gold Medal at the Great American Beer Festival®From Against The Grain:

Louisville, KY September 25, 2018—Against the Grain Brewery received a gold medal at the 2018 Great American Beer Festival (GABF) competition. Presented by the Brewers Association, GABF is the largest commercial beer competition in the world and recognizes the most outstanding beers produced in the United States. The top three winners in the competition’s 102 beer-style categories were announced September 22 at the Great American Beer Festival awards ceremony held at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver, Colorado.

Against the Grain was recognized in the Wood and Barrel-Aged Strong Stout beer-style category for its 70K Amburana, a bourbon barrel-aged imperial stout secondary aged in an Amburana wood barrel, a wood native to Brazil. 70K Amburana was a special, limited release of the brewery’s 70K, a double recipe of the brewery’s infamous 35K milk stout. 70K Amburana is a dark, silky smooth milk stout with additional essence of rich spice imparted by the Amburana barrel. Against the Grain is the only brewery in the United States to obtain and age beers in an Amburana wood barrel. Against the Grain Brewery is a 8,000-barrel microbrewery located in Louisville, KY that specializes in creating beers with the merit to laugh in the face of naysayers. They are nationally and internationally known for such beers like Citra Ass Down, an exponentially Citra-hopped IPA, and their coveted bourbon barrel-aged smoked stout, Bo & Luke.

The 2018 GABF competition winners were selected by an international panel of 293 expert judges from 8,496 entries, received from 2,404 U.S. breweries, plus 101 Pro-Am and 49 Collaboration entries.

“It’s an honor to win such a prestigious award for beer in the U.S. let alone bringing attention to beer made in Kentucky. We have amazing beer and breweries in Kentucky. It’s an honor to be a steward and representation of that for Kentucky,” said Sam Cruz, co-owner of Against the Grain Brewery.

“The 32nd edition of the GABF competition yielded a remarkable turnout of the country’s most exemplary beers,” said Chris Swersey, competition manager, Great American Beer Festival. “I’m continuously impressed by contenders’ talent and passion and would like to extend congratulations to this year’s winners for their excellence in brewing.”
