Philadelphians get first access to local mead as Allentown’s Colony Meadery launches Oct 1. in the
Philadelphia Market with wholesale partnership
PHILADELPHIA – After years of waiting for law changes and vetting partners, The Colony Meadery is
finally coming to shelves and taps in the City of Brotherly Love.
The meadery will launch with 31st and Wharton, starting on October 1.
“We’ve waited a long time for this,” said CEO and Co-founder Greg Heller-LaBelle. “We spent a lot of
time working to get the laws changed, and then a lot of time making sure we had the right partner, and
we definitely have it in 31.”
Thanks to a series of alcohol law changes that took effect earlier this year, meads under 8.5% ABV can
now be sold as malt beverages wherever beer can be sold, including via wholesaler. Higher-gravity
meads remain self-distributed as wine.
“We are very excited to add this world-class mead to our portfolio, especially in cans,” said Jason Miller,
Director of Marketing for 31st and Wharton.
The Colony Meadery will have cans, bottles and draft lines available October 1 in Philadelphia’s five
counties. 31 will also service Lancaster, Berks, Lackawanna and Luzerne counties. By PA law, they will
continue to self-distribute their portfolio over 8.5% ABV.
Since its launch in 2013, The Colony Meadery has expanded its reach and profile dramatically. Their
mead can be found in large retailers such as Wegmans, Weis and PLCB state stores, and they are
distributing mead to New Jersey with Hunterdon Brewing and New York with Remarkable Liquids.

ReplyDeleteIf you like mead it's well worth the money and many are much more than just fermented honey....and most are very strong so you wouldn;t be drinking 12oz at a time by yourself.
