Smuttynose Adding Pinniped Special Vienna Lager To Year-Round Line-Up

imageWe brought you a peek, and now this from Smuttynose:

New beer alert! Introducing Pinniped Special, a Vienna-style lager and newest addition to our year-round line-up. Look for it at the brewery on June 3rd in 6pk and 12pk bottles and draft! Fully flavored with an ABV of 5.1%, it’ll be available in your favorite store starting June 5th. It’s the perfect beer to enjoy at the beach during the summer or around the fire in winter.

“We’ve always been big fans of the Vienna-style lagers, so we’re really excited that we have the opportunity to offer this year-round” said Peter Egelston, founder and president of Smuttynose Brewing Company. “We used a lot of classic Austrian ingredients and brewing techniques to make it as authentic and true to the style as possible, and we think Vienna would be proud.”

Renowned brewmaster Anton Dreher first brewed the Vienna lager in Vienna in 1841. The Vienna lager has a reddish-brown or copper color, and a medium body with slight malt sweetness and hints of toast. Pinniped Special offer notes of caramel and toasted bread with a clean, hoppy bitterness and a dry, cleansing finish. We use an extensive variety of German and American malts to create the classic Vienna lager taste.  Our blend of sterling and saphir hops to give it that slightly dry, refreshing finish.

You’re probably wondering what, exactly, a pinniped is at this point. So let’s educate! Pinnipeds are part of the pinnipedia family, or according to our friends at dictionary.com, a sea mammal with “all four limbs adapted into flippers for aquatic life, including seals and walruses.” So that cute, cuddly seal in our logo? Pinniped. So the next time someone says beer can’t teach you anything, drop a pinniped knowledge bomb. Seems like that victory sip of your Pinniped Special will never be sweeter.

If you love pinnipeds as much as we do and want to get involved, contact Shoals Marine Lab in Durham, New Hampshire. They work harder than anyone to research, educate, and protect the Seacoast.
