Mybeerbuzz .com Highlights Indeed Brewing Mexican Honey Lager

imageIf you’ve been playing along with the home version of mybeerbuzz.com, you’ve already noticed a new trend in beer styles.  First it was sessionable IPAs, then fruited IPAs but there’s a new trend emerging, and it’s coming just in time for summer…Mexican-style lagers.

Today we’re sampling a pretty unique take on a Mexica-style lager and it’s from Indeed Brewing in Minneapolis, MN.  The beer is called Mexican Honey Lager and it is an imperial lager brewed with Mexican orange blossom honey.  This GABF 2014 Silver medalist is now available in 16oz cans (coming May 1st)…so off we go.

Mexican Honey Lager pours a bright crystal-clear gold color and we found some dull sweet honey aromas with some citrus & floral aromas to follow.  The beer is loaded with sweet malty honey flavors as well as some graham cracker and mild citrus imparted by the Amarillo hops.  The beer feels crisp and refreshing with a really easy drinking summer mouthfeel and a surprisingly sneaky 8%-AbV.  Yes that’s right, Mexican Honey Lager is an imperial lager, so the 8%-AbV and 16oz can will sneak up on you.  We thought the balance was really nice, leaning slightly toward the floral hop side of the fence, which surprised us when we read that the beer only hits 17 IBU.  We also though it was cool that this beer uses Budvar Lager yeast…and overall we really liked this unique take on a Mexican-style lager (or should I say an Imperial Lager that uses Mexican honey)
