From Oskar Blues:
DENVER, CO – Oskar Blues Brewery and 97.3 KBCO present “Anders Osborne’s Yayapalooza” on Saturday, April 8th at the Gothic Theatre in Denver. This one-day festival is a fundraiser for the CAN’d Aid Foundation and a tribute to Shirlee “Yaya” Katechis, the venerable and hard lovin’ matriarch of Oskar Blues Brewery, who passed away last year.
Twenty years ago this April, Yaya and her son, Dale Katechis, opened a live-music fueled, Cajun restaurant in the small town of Lyons, Colorado and unwittingly birthed what would become the boundary-busting and multi-faceted Oskar Blues brand. Originally from Florence, Alabama, Yaya’s no-nonsense style infused with Southern hospitality, impeccable work ethic and an uncanny ability to find the good in everyone helped fuel the creation of the CAN’d Aid Foundation in 2013.
CAN'd Aid’s recent TUNES partnership with New Orleans-based singer/songwriter Anders Osborne spawned Send Me A Friend, a national network of sober “friends” who support musicians and music industry professionals on the road to sobriety – allowing them to get back to work. Strong southern roots and a shared passion for giving back sparked common ground between Anders Osborne and Yaya’s legacy, which inspired this collaborative celebration.
“I’d like to believe it’s more than a coincidence that one of my most popular songs shares a name with the woman who influenced and helped shape all that Oskar Blues represents. When we started talking about the Send Me a Friend concept and I learned about Yaya, it just felt right,” Anders noted.
“We’re fortunate to work with a musician as gritty, raw and real as Anders and love how Yayapalooza is coming together. I’m excited to dig in, see where the creative collaboration takes us and watch the SMAF network take off”, said Diana Ralston, Executive Director of the CAN’d Aid Foundation.
