Short’s - Batch 5000 Triple IPA - A First Sampling

Congratulations to Short’s Brewing for not only reaching a really significant brewing milestone, but for also marking the occasion with a really exciting beer.  To celebrate the 5,000 batch of beer brewed at their Elk Rapid, MI facility, Short’s has decided to brew a special beer appropriately named Batch 5000.

This beer is a Triple IPA, so given my love of all things IPA, I was really excited to get my hands on a bottle.  This beer is also the first beer to be packaged in 22oz bottles on the Short’s production line, so it is a rare treat for sure.

Head Brewer Tony Hansen formulated this recipe based on some of the big IPA’s Short’s brewed to celebrate their yearly anniversary, and the resulting beer is a really monsterous triple IPA.

This beer has knock-you-over citrusy aromas with an ever present hoppy feel to it.  The flavors start with pineapple and citrus, and finish with a piney and resinous bite.  Batch 5000 has some malty sweetness up front and just the right balance of bitterness to tame it on your palate.  Of course you absolutely cannot miss the boozy and warming feel of the 15%-AbV, and quite honestly I was surprised to find that this beer is only 75 IBU….it feels much hoppier (in a good way).  There’s a lot going on here, but again in a really good way.  I think Batch 5000 is a really uniique and special brew and we really enjoyed sampling it.

Batch 5000 was released 1/29 to only select Michigan accounts and at the Bellaire, MI pub.  If you do get a chance to sample this beer (and you absolutely should) please be sure to let us know what YOU think.
