At the end of February, Hi-Wire Brewing invited Charlotte-based Birdsong Brewing to make the trek up the mountain and spend some time brewing in the brewhouse. Conor Robinson, Birdsong’s Head Brewer, came by and put in some heavy lifting as the crew added base and specialty malts to the brew.
The resulting collaboration ale is a peated wee heavy, a beer inspired by the smoky flavors of Scotch whiskey produced in the Scottish highlands. The smoky flavor brought forth from the addition of peated malt, which is created when malt is dried over a peat flame, blends beautifully with the malt-forward sweetness traditional in wee heavy ales. Fruit-forward characteristics of Scottish yeast round out the flavor profile of this collaborative ale.
Bird On A Wire is a one-off beer that will be released just in time for Charlotte Beer Week on Friday, March 13th. This beer will be available for purchase in both the Hi-Wire and Birdsong tasting rooms as well as in very limited quantities in bottle shops across the state. Talk to your local bottle shop to see if they will be hosting a Bird On A Wire tapping event.
