A big thank you to everyone at Samuel Adams for helping me kick off the un-official start of summer with their Porch Rocker and Summer Ale 2014. With the warm Memorial Day weekend weather, I couldn’t wait to chill down a bottle and can of each and try them out.
Up first is Porch Rocker, a classic Bavarian Radler. This beer begins life as a Helles lager, and Samuel Adams blends in lemon to make a really easy drinking and lower 4.4% ABV summer brew. This Radler is easy drinking, and I really liked the citrusy finish. Porch Rocker is really bright on the palate and the clean tart flavors at the end will make you want even more. I was anxious to try the new “Sam Can” with Porch Rocker, and for my tastes, I’d say it really makes this beer even easier to drink and enjoy. 2014 is the first year for Porch Rocker to be available nationally in cans, so be sure to try it for yourself.
Up next I couldn’t resist sampling Samuel Adams Summer Ale 2014 back to back with Porch Rocker. Summer Ale is based on an American wheat ale, and to that they add Hallertau Mittlefrueh and Saaz noble hops as well as lemon peel to create a really refreshing summer beer. As if that’s not enough fun, Samuel Adams adds in Grains of Paradise (a cardamom-like African pepper) for a peppery refreshing finish. Summer Ale is definitely a little more two-dimensional than Porch Rocker and it has really nice complexity and balance. This beer is very easy drinking at 5.3% ABV, and once again I really liked what the “Sam Can” brought to the game.
Both of these beers are available now in 12oz bottles and cans, and be sure to try both beers and both packages and let me know what you think. The folks at Samuel Adams were also nice enough to send me three great summer recipes using Summer Ale to make Pigs In a Blanket, Boston Lager Bacon Blue Cheese Dogs and Porch Rocker Poppy Seed & Mustard Chili-Dogs. If you’re interested in the recipes, drop me an e-Mail (mybeerbuzz@gmail.com) and I’ll forward them on.
