This beer was originally brewed in 2005 for AleSmith’s 10th Anniversary and today we get a peek at the 2013 version. Decadence 2013 Anniversary Ale will be a German-Style Dopplebock Lager, it will be packaged in 750ml bottles and come in at a big 10% ABV.
German style? Notes of bread crusts, and hints of chocolate? Neither rings true on my palate. I just finished a bottle, and the one word summary is "disappointing." In fact, it was difficult to drink the whole bottle. Right from the beginning, it tasted like it was brewed in a bourbon oak barrel, which could be okay, but not when the flavor of bourbon over powers the malt, and not when you're touting it as a German style doppelbock. If you want a fine crafted, American styled doppelbock, this ain't it. I'm a fan of AleSmith, but this one just seems they went too far off the mark for the anniversary label. Come on, AleSmith. I KNOW you can do better than this!!
