You remember the issues with Four Loko back Nov 2010 and the revamp of their line to remove caffeine…well it looks The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is now investigating a new wave of complaints relative to the amount of alcohol in the beverage as well as the bright packaging & large sized cans. Apparently this marketing and the previous claim that the drink contains about 2 times a normal 12oz beer has now come under the scrutiny of the FTC. This is no big shock given the fact that these 23.5oz cans are 12% ABV! Apparently a compromise settlement had been proposed by the FTC, but after public comment, that deal is on hold. Of interest is also that the Beer Institute lobbying group is also campaigning against the Four Loko comparison to beer in terms of ABV. Beyond that, everyone from State Attorneys General to the American Medical Association actually fighting to ban Four Loko (a power the FTC does not hold)…so stay tuned. More details here from the Huffington Post.
