Yes I’ll readily admit that my inner beer-geek emerged as we welcomed brewmaster Mitch Steele from Stone Brewing Co to the Friday BeerBuzz. As Webster will reinforce, Stone Brewery & world bistro gardens is an amazing place; one of my favorite beer destinations, and a place all beer lovers should visit. Not only does Stone serve some amazing beers there, but the brewing facility and outdoor gardens are incredible. (see photos below).
It was incredibly nice of Mitch to join us live on the phone from Escondido CA at 5:30AM in the morning their time, and even though Mitch admits he’s an early riser, I’m still very thankful that he took the time. Stone beers are huge in our market and I think it’s really exciting to have our local listeners get to hear from the man responsible for brewing them.
Stone 14th Anniversary (Emperial IPA) has a great story and of course it’s also a great beer. For those that have followed along, Stone has been shopping for real estate in the UK to potentially open the first US craft brewing facility in the UK. While on that journey, Mitch & the guys from Stone spent some time researching the history of the India Pale Ale and came up with Emperial IPA. This adventure not only spawned a great beer, but stay tuned for a book that Mitch & Steve Wagner are writing about IPA brewing for the Brewers Association.
Emperial IPA is a malty British-styled IPA for sure, but it has way more going for it than that. To my palate, the IPA also has not only a prominent hoppy character, but also a strong peach backbone. Now I’ll admit I love a good peach flavor in a beer and maybe I just want to taste Peach in here, but I swear I do. In any case this is a great beer and one that you should seek out while it is still readily available in NEPA.
I also want to say a big thank you to Dennis Bonvie for joining us on the show and tasting Stone 14 with us. It was exciting to meet Dennis and I’m excited to see his Beefy King & Blue Chip Gourmet restaurants doing so well in Wilkes-Barre. A big show for sure and another tasty beer.
Thanks
to Mitch, Dennis, John, Nancy, Joe & Bosco for yet another fun Friday.

/ WILK Friday BeerBuzz – 24 Sept 2010 (Stone 14th Anniversary Emperial IPA)
So we were as giddy as schoolgirls to have Mitch Steele on the show...is that so wrong?!? lol
ReplyDeleteA pleasure talking to Mitch from Stone Brewing, their 14th Anniversary Emperial IPA is excellent, and it was fun to have Bonvie help out with the tasting too!
Great job, great show! Thanks Bill!

Best show yet! I was excited to hear Bonvie taste with you and I'm amazed that you guys have the cache to get Mitch Steele on the air with you. Friday Beerbuzz is the best!
ReplyDeleteMarty
Steele & Bonvie ! Rock on friday buzzers.
ReplyDeleteMy husband and I are huge hockey fans and just starting to learn our beers. Thanks for getting Bonvie. We'll be sure to try out Beefy King and get some Stone 14 too.
ReplyDeleteAmy
Bonvie!
ReplyDeleteThanks John and thanks everyone. We really appreciate Mitch Steele for taking the time out (at 5:30AM) to talk beer with us. Stone Brewery is an amazing place and a MUST DO stop if you're out in So Cal. And yes it was also cool to have Dennis Bonvie taste along with us. All in all a VERY fun Friday morning.
ReplyDeleteYou guys have the best beer show by far. After listening to a repeat of a previously recorded lame show, it was amazing to hear you guys march out the brewmaster for Stone and Bonvie! Hockey and beer fans unite.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the last comment. You're the best beer show by far. I'm also excited to try out Stone 14. I'll be checking out Krugels this afternoon to get some. My husband who is a huge hockey fan, wants to go to Beefy King after the moviews tonight so save us a seat Bonvie!
ReplyDeleteJJ
Glad to see Krugels join in on the fun. They have a great store of beer and we shop there all the time.
ReplyDeleteThanks everyone. We're excited to have Krugel's on with us as well and we're looking forward to bringing you more and more beers that are featured at Krugels. Stay tuned!
ReplyDeleteI don't know how you keep doing it, but the show gets better and better every week.
ReplyDeleteRyan W
PS Stone 14 is a great choice so I'll need to get down to Krugels and buy some more before the beerbuzz rush.
Rockin'' the great guests again. And no one has pointed it out yet. This is a fantastic beer. You keep quietly featuring some of the best beers out there. I'm not surprised that two of your choices just in the last few months won GABF medals. Keep up the great beers Bill.
ReplyDeleteArman
Bonvie was a good guest and we miss him on the ice. We'll check out Beefy King but why no beer cam?
ReplyDeleteYep Anon Dennis was a lot of fun AND Beer Cam will ride again. He's a busy cam with a booked schedule but we've managed to squeeze him in for an upcoming show ;)
ReplyDeleteAmazing guests today. I Can't believe you got Stone. But where's my Stout?

Prophetic guest. You guys are doing to the 107 beer show what Bonvie did to the competition. Smoking them! Keep it up buzzers.
ReplyDeletePaul (Kingston, PA)
I've really liked the last 4 Stone Anniversary beers so now you have me excited. On my way to Krugels for lunch =)
ReplyDeleteBig beer Big guests and Big show. I like your style Bill.
ReplyDeleteKeep up the fun. I'm surprised how much I manage to learn every week, and it's all about beer. I see better and better beers in many of our local bars and I think you guys and Nancy for that. Now let me buy you all a beer!
ReplyDeleteBrian
Thank you everyone. I'm having a lot of fun doing the show and I really love beer so hopefully that translates into the show. We'll be doing more and more in the coming weeks so stay tuned....you never know what we'll do next!
ReplyDeleteYou really know your beers Mr beerbuzz. As an IPA lover I'm amazed at how many different style IPA's you've put on the show. From the hoppy Pale Ale from Yards to the hoppy Amber from Troegs, to the Black IPA from Break to the Belgian IPA from Troegs, not to mention the Bells 2-hearted and a few I'm sure I'm forgetting. You've opened my eyes to so many styles of IPA that I never knew about and I think you for that. Of course I love them all now. I've never been a stout lover so maybe you'll convert me there in the future. Awsome beers and my new favorite radio program. Cheers buzzys.
ReplyDeleteJohn from Mountaintop
Welcome to Krugels. I never knew you existed until I saw you on mybeerbuzz. Now I'm a regular and excited to see your expansion and your sponsorship of the Friday BeerBuzz. I'll be up with my growlers now too.
ReplyDeleteJ
NEPA is lucky to have so many great beers and a really good beer program. I was no fan of Blithering Idiot, but I loved 3 phillosphers and most of the others. I'll have to shop at Krugels and see what else is out there.
ReplyDeleteReally nice beer and amazing that the head brewer from Stone is on your show. I love Bonvie too so maybe I'll run up to Krugels and get some Stone 14, then stop at Beefy Kings on the way home for a snack. I smell a Friday BeerBuzz appearance coming up.
ReplyDeleteJJ
Sounds like a good plan JJ...and you never know...we are working on a Friday BeerBuzz happy hour.
ReplyDeleteJ I'm glad to see you found beers by using mybeerbuzz and like the Friday BeerBuzz. That is our noble purpose...bringing good beers and good people together.
John...I'm a huge IPA fan so stay tuned as I plan to feature some of the best. I also plan to feature MANY other beer styles so hopefully we can get you interested in them as well.
Thanks everyone.
