also was in baltimore this weekend drinking national bohemian with the puzzle caps and wondering if the lion is contract brewing that one? thanks for any insight.
Yes Lee I'm betting the McSorley's you had was brewed @ Lion. An easy way to check is looking for Wilkes-Barre on the bottle. I'm not sure I understand the Dark Steg Porter/update the page question...more details please. Not sure if Lion does the Natty Bo brewing...again if it says WB on the bottle it's Lion.
The McSorley's brews were reformulated last fall in collaboration with the Lion brewers and Southampton's Phil Markowski. Both the Irish Ale and Black Lager are entirely their own recipes - Black Lager is not Steg Porter, Phil's target for it was something more akin to a traditional German Schwarzbier (though IMHO a bit roastier). Yes, all of it is brewed at the Lion. Since the reformulation, I personally think both beers took a giant leap forward in quality, and both are up to any discerning beer geek's scrutiny. We also have made Natty Boh, though not recently. Let's keep that one on the down-low, eh? :) FYI we aren't the only brewery to use puzzle caps; I think there's one in Texas that does.
For what it's worth, I don't think The Lion has anything to do with National, but for perspective, the first time I ever saw the rebus puzzles on beer bottle crowns was on Ballantine's IPA in 1978, in Baltimore, coincidentally. My roommate's Dad loved the stuff, and we grew to love the beer AND the puzzles.
Those caps have been around a number of breweries for decades, so the rebus caps are not the exclusive property of The Lion.
