Local brewery makes connections with Barbarians in Iraq
WILLIAMSPORT, PA – Local brewery Bavarian Barbarian Brewing Company has expanded the Barbarian Nation to include Marines serving in Iraq. In July, Major Kevin “Chet” Heartwell, a pilot in the 367th Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron, was skimming the internet looking for a battle axe as a going-away gift for one of his squadron mates and found Bavarian Barbarian Brewing Company’s website. Maj. Heartwell was intrigued by the local brewery because his squadron’s radio call sign is “Barbarian.”
An email was sent to the Bavarian Barbarian by Maj. Heartwell, requesting an olive-drab colored t-shirt bearing the brewery’s battle axe logo. Quick to accommodate, the brewery sent t-shirts, hats and bumper stickers bearing the battle axe logo to Maj. Heartwell, stationed in Baghdad.
According to Maj. Heartwell, “The stickers were a big hit. The Marines thought they were pretty cool and we starting to see them show up in different areas of the squadron.”
After it was suggested by the brewery to place the bumper stickers on his helicopter, Maj. Heartwell responded, “we don’t have bumpers on our aircraft, not many traffic jams at 3000 feet, but let me see what I can do.”
In return, Maj. Heartwell sent a U.S. flag flown in his helicopter during a five-hour mission over Baghdad to the Bavarian Barbarian where the flag now hangs prominently in the brewery. Accompanying the flag was a certificate authenticating the flag’s origin and decals bearing the squadron’s logo. Photographs of squadron members wearing the brewery’s t-shirts were also emailed.
Soon after the first t-shirts arrived in Baghdad, the Barbarian Squadron’s commander, Lieutenant Colonel James Adams emailed the Bavarian Barbarian requesting more t-shirts. The brewery responded and mailed out t-shirts to Lt. Col. Adams along with packages of Halloween candy on Halloween day.
On Christmas Eve, the Bavarian Barbarian received an email from Lt. Col. Adams reporting that his package had finally arrived. However, the package had to catch up with the Barbarian Squadron at their base in California. Lt. Col. Adams was happy to report that the Barbarian Squadron had arrived back in the U.S. just in time for Thanksgiving. He was even happier to report, “we brought everyone home that we took to Iraq.”
