We're back on the green-ground of the east coast. Given the busy pace of our trip, the total quantity of beer consumed, and the jet lag generated by 13 hours of flying, I'll just start with a teaser.
One of my favorite stops on our wild west beer tour was a little place called Rituals Tavern. Rituals is in the North Park area of San Diego and was quite a pleasant surprise. The owner (who was nice enough to stop and say hi) is a lover of great food & wine, but also a lover of fine beers, and his tavern features some great examples of all of the above.
I'll skip the food & wine part and get to the beers, except to say you HAVE to love a place that is into the details enough to make their own ketchup. They had 8 handles, including a hand pump, I asked the bartender and apparently hand pumps are only slightly more common on the west coast than in our area. The night we were there, they had a maibock on so I didn't sample the cask, but I did manage to find some great draft beer and very cool bottled beer. My favorite feature was that Rituals features mostly local beers. Those that know me know I constantly encourage drinking locally, and Rituals pulls that off. The tap list included locals like Mission, Alesmith, Port Brewing, Green Flash and Stone. The bottle list also included many locals, but also offered some great Belgian choices.
All in all a very cool place to tip a pint, and a must-do if you hit the SoCal area. Thanks Michael....
