Funkwerks Adds New Smaller 330ml Bottles

20 August 2014

From Funkwerks:

For more information on our beer, upcoming events, tastings, recipes and more, visit Funkwerks’ website and follow the company on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and enjoy the blog. Funkwerks, the award-winning Saison-focused brewery in Fort Collins, Colorado, is now packaging in 330ml bottle 4-packs. Now Funkwerks customers can enjoy the same beloved Tropic King and the award-winning flagship Saison in a smaller, more convenient bottle.

For three years now, Funkwerks has been bottling solely in 750 ml bottles. Brad Lincoln, co-owner/co-founder explains, “people tend to save larger bottles of beer for a special occasion or to share with others.” Smaller bottles provide more variety, accessibility, and the convenience of enjoying a single beer without the commitment of a larger bottle. “Smaller bottles additionally help in maintaining freshness,”explains Gordon Schuck, co-owner/co founder, “if people are opening a larger bottle and saving half of it for a later time, the beer will lose it’s carbonation and quickly oxidize with more air left in the bottle.”

Previously Funkwerks did not have the capacity to accommodate the increase in production that would come with bottling in 330 ml bottles, but their recent expansion of two 30-barrel fermenters increased their fermentation capacity by almost 43%. “It’s a relief to have more fermenters. We are certainly using them,” said Gordon.

Now with the ability to brew more beer, Funkwerks has also decided to return to kegging their beer in half barrels, reducing the cost per fluid ounce for accounts.

Funkwerks Raspberry Provincial Returns

20 April 2014

image
From Funkwerks:

Funkwerks announced today the return of their Raspberry Provincial, a seasonal Belgian-Style Sour Ale. This is the second bottling of Raspberry Provincial. Funkwerks first debuted Raspberry Provincial in summer 2013.

More than 160 pounds of raspberries were added to Provincial, a Berliner Weisse style beer, resulting in a tart fruit beer complete with a citrusy raspberry aroma and delicate sweet and tart finish. Alcohol by volume is 4.2%.

“Last summer we brewed a test batch of Provincial, our take on a Berliner Weisse style beer and decided to have some fun with it,” said Gordon Schuck, Funkwerks Co-Founder/Owner and Head Brewer. “We added a heavy dose of raspberries and the end result was so delicious we decided to recreate it. Raspberry Provincial is pleasingly tart and refreshing. It’s a perfect summertime beer and pairs well with lighter fare.”

Raspberry Provincial is available in limited quantities for bars, restaurants and liquor stores across Colorado, Nebraska, and Arizona. Raspberry Provincial is currently being poured on draft and available in bottles at the Funkwerks taproom.

Funkwerks Releasing Bourbon Barrel Aged Quad

13 December 2013

image
From Funkwerks:

Funkwerks

will celebrate its third anniversary on December 14, 2013 with taproom festivities and the release of Bourbon Barrel Aged Quad to mark the occasion. Gordon Schuck and Brad Lincoln founded Funkwerks in December 2009. The award-winning Saison-focused brewery is located in Fort Collins, Colorado.

“Gordon and I are very excited to have three years under our belt,” said Brad Lincoln, Funkwerks Co-Founder/Owner. “It’s great to see how Funkwerks has grown. We’d like to thank our employees and especially our supporters, fans, and customers. We hope to raise a glass with many of them on Saturday.”

The public is encouraged to join the celebration at the Funkwerks taproom Saturday beginning at 1:00 pm with a celebratory toast and the tapping of the first Bourbon Aged Quad keg. Special production staff lead brewery tours will be offered at 2:00pm and 3:00 pm, and the grand prize drawing for the custom built Funkwerks fixed gear bike from Big Shot Bikes is scheduled for 6:00 pm. Winner does not need to be present to win. Beer enthusiasts will receive one entry into the drawing for the bike for each full beer purchased in the taproom on Saturday between 12:00 pm – 6:00 pm.

Bourbon Barrel Aged Quad will be released in conjunction with the third anniversary party. Bourbon Barrel Aged Quad starts with Funkwerks’ Belgian-style Quadrupel, which is inspired by the Trappist breweries of Belgium. Aging in oak bourbon barrels for eight months allows the unique flavors from the barrels to meld with the base beer. A spicy oak aroma leads to flavors of caramel and malt balanced by fruit notes from the house yeast strain. Hints of bourbon lead to a dry finish that makes this the perfect beer to enjoy on a cold winter evening paired with Applewood Smoked Beef Brisket. Alcohol by volume is 11.5%.

“When we previously released Quad in the taproom it was hugely popular, we sold out of bottles very quickly,” added Lincoln. “I’m even more excited for the bourbon barrel aged version of this beer because of how the flavors mellowed over time, it’s the perfect beer to share with friends.”

“The barrel aging process can take anywhere from four to 18 months, therefore we don’t set a firm release date for barrel aged beers,” said Gordon Schuck, Funkwerks Co-Founder/Owner and Head Brewer. “We’re super happy with how the flavors of Bourbon Barrel Aged Quad developed in just eight months. And the timing is perfect for sampling with our friends at the anniversary party.”

Since it’s barrel-aged, Bourbon Barrel Aged Quad will be available in limited quantities for bars, restaurants and liquor stores across Colorado, Nebraska, and Arizona. Beginning December 14, Bourbon Barrel Aged Quad will be poured on draft and available in bottles at the Funkwerks taproom.

For more information on the anniversary party, upcoming events, tastings, beers, recipes and more, visit Funkwerks’ website, follow the company on Facebook, Twitter, and enjoy the blog.

Funkwerks Launches Tropic King Imperial Session & Saison

19 November 2013

image
From Funkwerks:

Funkwerks, the award-winning Saison-focused brewery in Fort Collins, Colorado, continues with its label redesign project unveiling new labels with the latest bottling of Saison and Tropic King.

Funkwerks first unveiled its new label design earlier this year in July with the release of Provincial, the summer seasonal. Rum Barrel Aged Deceit, released in September, followed by Deceit in October, also featured the new label format.

“Our goal with the new label design was to establish a block on the shelf,” said Brad Lincoln, Funkwerks Co-Founder/Owner. “Before our beers didn't have a cohesive look, their appearance didn’t necessarily compliment each another. Now we’ve have a clean, unified look that still permits variety and provides brand consistency for our customers.”
image
Saison and Tropic King are widely distributed in bars, restaurants and liquor stores across Colorado, Nebraska, and Arizona. Saison and Tropic King are poured year-round on draft and available in bottles at the Funkwerks taproom.

“The redesign of all our labels updates the overall look of our packaging and incorporates new features such as date coding for quality control. They are much easier to spot on the shelf as a family of beers now.” added Gordon Schuck, Funkwerks Co-Founder/Owner and Head Brewer.

Funkwerks Releases Oud Bruin Barrel-Aged Sour

image
From Funkwerks:

Funkwerks has released its first barrel-aged sour, Funkwerks Oud Bruin. Oud Bruin is the product of Funkwerks’ sour program which launched in early 2012. The base for Oud Bruin sat in oak whiskey barrels and oak red wine barrels for more than twelve months.

“When we founded Funkwerks, one goal was to some day brew sour beers,” said Gordon Schuck, Funkwerks Co-Founder/Owner and Head Brewer. “Oud Bruin represents the start of sour beer releases.”

Funkwerks aged the Oud Bruin base for one year then carefully selected and blended the twelve best barrels for the final product. Aroma of dark malts and black cherry compliment the notes of dark fruit in the flavor. A blend of Brettanomyces with Lactobacillus along with other sour cultures contribute the characteristic sour flavor profile of this style. Old Bruin pours a deep auburn color and has a dry tart finish. ABV is 7.5%.

“We are excited to bring our Oud Bruin to market. It was a couple years in the making! I think this beer really came together well,” added Brad Lincoln, Funkwerks Co-Founder/Owner.

Oud Bruin pairs exceptionally well with Carbonades Flamandes, a hearty Flemish beef and beer stew. Since it’s barrel-aged, Oud Bruin will be available in limited quantities for bars, restaurants and liquor stores across Colorado, Nebraska, and Arizona. Oud Bruin is now being poured on draft and is available in bottles at the Funkwerks taproom.

Oud Bruin (old brown) is a style of beer originating from the Flemish region of Belgium. The Dutch name refers to the long aging process, up to a year. It undergoes a secondary fermentation, which takes several weeks to a month, and is followed by bottle aging for several more months. The extended aging allows residual yeast and bacteria to develop a sour flavor characteristic for this style.

Funkwerks Debuts New Deceit Golden Ale Label

04 October 2013

image
From Funkwerks:

Funkwerks

has announced the 2013 fall release of Deceit, a Belgian-Style Golden Ale. Deceit won a gold medal at the 2012 Great American Beer Festival® in the Belgian-Style Strong Specialty Ale category.

Funkwerks’ gold medal award-winning Deceit is inspired by Belgian Tripels and Golden Strong Ales. Deceit is a Belgian-Style Golden Ale that is deceptively palatable as the alcohol percentage is masked by complex characteristics introduced by our unique Belgian yeast strain. It pours with an alluring golden color and shimmering white head. Aromas of spice and fruity esters lead to flavors of pineapple, pear, and citrus accompanied by a sweet tartness.

“We named it Deceit because it’s deceptively easy to drink even though it has a rather high alcohol by volume at nine percent,” said Gordon Schuck, Funkwerks Co-Founder/Owner and Head Brewer. “Your first sip will introduce a slight spice that compliments the citrus notes carrying the beer to a dry and rewarding finish.”

Deceit is best served at 50 degrees and pairs exceptionally well with mushroom-sage stuffing and turkey. As a signature seasonal release, Deceit is widely distributed in bars, restaurants and liquor stores across Colorado, Nebraska, and Arizona. Deceit is poured on draft and available in bottles at the Funkwerks taproom.

“We’ve redesigned the Deceit label for enhanced brand recognition” added Brad Lincoln, Funkwerks Co-Founder/Owner. “With increased distribution and production it’s essential to have some consistency for our customers. We debuted the new format this past July on Provincial, our summer release, and it’s been well-received. Look for new labels on our flagship Saison and Tropic King next.”

Funkwerks will be at booth M16 at the 2013 Great American Beer Festival, October 10-12 in Denver, CO.

Funkwerks Releasing Rum Barrel Deceit Belgian Golden Ale

07 September 2013

image
From Funkwerks:

Funkwerks, the award-winning Saison-focused brewery in Fort Collins, Colorado, has released a limited quantity of Rum Barrel Deceit, a barrel aged Belgian-Style Golden Ale.

Rum Barrel Deceit starts with Funkwerks’ award-winning Belgian-style golden strong ale, Deceit. Aged in oak rum barrels for eight months, with a high percentage of Pilsner malt and a unique Belgian yeast strain, Rum Barrel Deceit is a strong yet deceptively smooth brew. The beer pours a golden color with alluring aromas of fresh apple and crisp white wine. Spicy notes in the flavor are complimented by characteristics inherent in the oak barrels. Slight fruit notes balance the elaborate flavors and transition into a dry and inviting finish. Alcohol by volume is 10.0%.

“We were excited for the opportunity to turn Deceit, our smooth gold-medal winning beer, into a barrel aged beer,” said Gordon Schuck, Funkwerks Co-Founder/Owner and Head Brewer. “Barrel aging makes a beer more complex and limits quantity for a very sought after beer.”

Rum Barrel Deceit is best served at 50 degrees and pairs incredibly well with Dulce de Leche Pound Cake. Funkwerks produced nine and a half barrels of Rum Barrel Deceit. Rum Barrel Deceit is now available on draft and in bottles at the Funkwerks taproom; on draft in select Fort Collins, Colorado locations; and in 750 ml bottles in limited quantities at liquor stores in Colorado, Nebraska, and Arizona.

Funkwerks Provincial Belgian-Style Ale Available Now

03 July 2013

image
The original news is here…and now the official word from Funkwerks:

(Fort Collins, CO) – Funkwerks, announces the launch today of Funkwerks Provincial, the newest summer seasonal Belgian-Style Ale.

Provincial is a highly carbonated, light, refreshingly tart beer with citrusy pineapple aromas. The aromas carry through to the flavor leading to a dry finish. Provincial pairs nicely with fresh fish ceviche. Alcohol by volume is 5.6%.

Provincial will be on draft in numerous bars and restaurants and in 750 ml bottles in liquor stores across Colorado and Nebraska beginning this week. The Funkwerks tasting room in Fort Collins, CO will also have Provincial on tap and in bottles.

“We vet each seasonal by doing several experimental batches to assure the final recipe is right. Provincial is no exception,” said Brad Lincoln, Funkwerks Co-Founder/Owner. “The result is a summer citrus beer that we’re very proud of.”

Inspired by the German Berliner Weisse, Funkwerks allowed the wort to mature overnight with lactobacillus. The following day it was boiled and transferred to the fermenter where a Belgian wheat yeast strain, famous for its fruity flavors and dry finish, was then added. This unfiltered ale is best consumed fresh.

“Saisons brewed in the early 20th century were the product of mixed fermentations and of a lower alcohol content than the versions we have today. Provincial is our take on how these older style Saisons may have tasted. Tart and fruity yet dry and refreshing, this just may be the perfect summer beer,” commented Gordon Schuck, Funkwerks Co-Founder/Owner and Head Brewer.

Funkwerks is located at 1900 East Lincoln Avenue in Fort Collins, Colorado. The tasting room complete with an indoor bar, tables and retail area is open 7 days a week: Sunday through Thursday from 12pm-8pm; and Friday and Saturday from 12pm-9pm. Brewery tours are Saturdays at 2pm. Funkwerks also features a spacious outdoor, dog-friendly patio and lawn area with picnic benches.

06 May 2013

imageFrom Kannah Creek:

GRAND JUNCTION, CO, May 3, 2013/mbb/ – On May 13 there will be a simultaneous tapping at nine different Colorado locations of an all-female collaboration brew that took place at Kannah Creek Brewing Company. The collaboration beer is a cherry blossom saison aptly named Fleurs de Cerisier.

Eight female brewers and brewery representatives joined Kannah Creek Brewing Company’s female brewer, Emma Faulkner, on April 21to participate in Colorado’s 2nd all-female collaboration brew. The brewing session lasted about eight hours, and the brewing process takes about two additional weeks before the beer is ready to tap.
The women in attendance decided to tap the collaboration beer on the first day of American Craft Beer Week, May 13-19. The 8th annual American Craft Beer Week is an opportunity for craft beer lovers all across the U.S. to celebrate the more than 2,400 small and independent brewers that help shape America’s vast craft beer culture. “We wanted a way to celebrate craft beer and to contribute to the week as female brewers,” Faulkner stated.

Kannah Creek Brewing Company will tap their portion of the collaboration brew at 3pm on Monday the 13. The other confirmed tapping locations are Boulder Beer, Hand Made Liquid & Solids (Oskar Blues Brewery), and The Vail Ale House representing Great Divide Brewing Company. The five other participating breweries have yet to announce the locations where they will tap the Fleurs de Cerisier.

Proceeds from this collaboration brew will be donated to the Pink Boots Society. “The Pink Boots Society was created to empower women beer professionals to advance their careers in the Beer Industry through Education,” according to the mission statement on the Pink Boots Society website (pinkbootssociety.org).

Participating breweries include: Kannah Creek Brewing Company, Oskar Blues  Brewery, Odell  Brewing Company, Ska Brewing Company, Wynkoop  Brewing Company, Revolution  Brewing, Prost Brewing Company, Great Divide  Brewing Company, Boulder  Beer, and Funkwerks.

From Wynkoop:

Today at 5 PM at Wynkoop Brewing, we tap the first kegs of Ellegance, a special Belgian-style brown ale brewed for Colorado Craft Beer Week by a collection of women in the local craft beer scene.

This is the first all-female-brewed collaboration beer in Colorado, the tapping party runs from 5-7 PM upstairs at Wynkoop Brewing.

Ellegance is a delicious Belgian-style brown ale brewed with Simpson’s Golden Promise malt, specialty malts and a blend of hops including Nelson Sauvin, Motueka and Eldorado. All fermented with a Belgian yeast.

Elegant and highly quaffable, the 5% ABV beer features a creamy beige head, a glorious tea/garnet color, aromas of fruit and hops, flavors of toast and light caramel, hints of spice and a refreshing, lingering hop bite on its finale.

The project was headed up by our own Bess Dougherty, the group of Ellegance beer makers includes Natalie Lesko of Funkwerks, Sydney Skilken of Denver’s TRVE Brewing, Linsey Cornish of Odell Brewing, Reva Golden from Twisted Pine, Ashleigh Carter of Prost Brewing and Melissa Antone and Sara Ferber from Avery Brewing.

These trailblazing beery women will be on hand for the tapping, along with guests beers from their respective breweries.

Funkwerks Expanding Distribution with American Eagle

20 November 2012

image
Exciting news for Funkwerks from the Daily Camera:

Funkwerks, which employs 11 people, doubled its brewing capacity last January when it added three new 15-barrel tanks. It increased again by nearly half as much in October with the addition of the brewery's first 30-barrel tank. Funkwerks also recently picked up its first distributor, American Eagle, which will help get its beer into new markets, including some surrounding states in 2013, Lincoln says.

"We're not going to be the next huge brewery or anything along those lines, but we'd certainly like to get bigger and fill out our capacity," he says. "The key is to keep up the quality and consistency of our product and meet the demand that we have as we enter new markets."

Funkwerks Expanding After Winning Two GABF 2012 Gold Medals

16 October 2012

Good news for Funkwerks from the Coloradoan:

Just in time for the expected increase in demand for Funkwerks’ beers, the brewery received three new tanks on Monday — a 30-barrel fermenter, 30-barrel brite tank and 15-barrel brite tank. Schuck hopes to have beer brewing in them by today, which will up Funkwerks’ production to about 1,000 barrels this year.

Next year, Schuck expects to brew about 1,500 barrels, at which point Funkwerks will need to expand due to limitations with bottles and keg storage. Rather than relocate, Schuck said his brewery will work with the space it has, perhaps blowing out a wall to expand at the current location.

Funkwerks “Brett Dream” & Other Brewing News

18 June 2012

imageFrom Funkwerks:

It’s been a long time since I’ve done a blog post. With all the other things going on it always seems to fall by the wayside. It’s a shame because you really need to stop once in a while to gain perspective on where you’ve been and where you are going.
The past year has seen quite a few changes. With Saison winning a medal at GABF last year, Funkwerks has popped up on people’s radar and sales continue to grow. New tanks were installed in January which gave us some much needed capacity and the ability to do more experimental beers for the taproom and seasonal releases. One of the first being Brett Dream which is a beer we pilot brewed over two years ago but haven’t been able to get into the schedule until recently.

Brett Dream also marked the start of more wild / sour releases. We brewed a highly dry-hopped Belgian ale last month that is currently bottle conditioning with Brettanomyces and last week we brewed a full blown sour beer in the Oud Bruin style that will go into red wine barrels and may see the light of day in 18-24 months.

Not only are we looking to expand our barrel program in the future, we also plan on expanding to 30-barrel tanks, which would double our batch sizes of Saison and Tropic King. We’ve also recently designed and purchased new case boxes for our bottles which we’re excited to put into circulation.

On the technical side, we’ve slowly gotten our lab up and running and have already made changes in our process to improve our fermentations and yeast health. We also added filtration to our water supply to ensure clean, sediment-free brewing water.

So there you have it, the state of Funkwerks. I’m excited to see what the next year has in store for us!
Gordon
