Rogue: Drink Beer, Raise Money for College Students

Drink Beer, Raise Money for College StudentsFrom Rogue:

Newport, OR .—Hot Tub Scholarship Lager raises money for college students. Since 2014, Rogue Ales & Spirits has donated a portion of the sales of Hot Tub Scholarship Lager to the Jack Joyce Scholarship Fund, established in honor of the late founder of Rogue Ales & Spirits, to help students at Oregon State University’s Fermentation Science program pay for their education. In total, the Jack Joyce Scholarship has awarded $245,000 to 21 future fermenters.

The beer’s name and the can design are inspired by what Jack Joyce and one of the first winners of the scholarship had in common: an affinity for a good soak in a hot tub. One of the first recipients divulged that along with using his award to pay for books and tuition, he bought a hot tub. Though some scholarship awards ceremonies might frown on such a non-traditional purchase, the Rogues behind the scholarship thought it was not only hilarious, it was a fitting tribute to Jack, who was known to enjoy hot tubbing in his birthday suit.

“In order to secure the lease on our Bayfront pub in Newport, my dad, Jack, promised Mo Niemi (of the famous Mo’s chowder), that he would feed the local fishermen and take care of the community,” says Rogue President Brett Joyce. “He took that seriously. We continue to feed the fishermen in his honor by literally feeding them in Newport, but also by supporting our communities through the Rogue Foundation and the Jack Joyce Scholarship.”

Hot Tub Scholarship Lager is available in 6 pack 12 ounce cans and on draft at select retailers and all Rogue pubs through October. Use the Rogue Finder to find it near you. The Jack Joyce Scholarship Awards ceremony takes place in November at Oregon State University in Corvallis, Oregon.
