Guinness Planning To Build New U.S. Brewery & Visitor Center In Relay, MD

RELAY, MD , Jan. 31, 2017 Continuing the momentum from Diageo Beer Company USA's positive half year financial results, Diageo today announced its intention to build a US version of Dublin's popular Guinness Open Gate Brewery in Baltimore County, Maryland. As currently planned, the company would build a mid-sized Guinness brewery and a Guinness visitor experience with an innovation microbrewery at the company's existing Relay, Maryland site. This new brewing capability and consumer experience, combined with a packaging and warehousing operation, would bring the company's investment in Relay to approximately $50 million. The new brewery would be a home for new Guinness beers created for the US market, while the iconic Guinness Stouts will continue to be brewed at St. James's Gate in Dublin, Ireland. Visitors would be able to tour the working brewery, sample experimental beers brewed on-site at the taproom, and purchase Guinness merchandise at the retail store.  While finalization of these plans is still contingent on reaching agreement on several considerations, the project would represent a significant investment in Maryland in terms of economic development, job creation and tourism. 

"Opening a Guinness brewery and visitor center in the US will enable us to collaborate with fellow brewers and interact with the vibrant community of beer drinkers," stated Tom Day, President, Diageo Beer Company, USA.  "Given the success of our Open Gate Brewery in Dublin and the popularity of beer tourism in the US, we are confident that Americans will welcome the opportunity to come experience Guinness brewing in Baltimore County. We appreciate the support we have received so far from state and local officials and look forward to continuing to contribute to the local community."

The project would re-establish a Guinness brewery in the US after 63 years of absence. The new brewery and visitor experience would become part of Diageo's production facility in Relay, site of the historic Calvert Distillery which opened in 1933. Relay was chosen as the preferred location for this project for several reasons, including the site's proximity to major East Coast tourist and population hubs, availability of skilled employees, and space to build and adapt existing structures on the property.  While many specifics are still being evaluated, it is estimated that this project could generate approximately 40 jobs in brewing, warehousing and an agile packaging operation, which may include canning, bottling and kegging. In addition, the Guinness visitor experience part of the project could create approximately 30 jobs. A significant number of construction jobs would likely also be created during the building phase, and the company would endeavor to hire as many local firms as possible to conduct this work.

"Beer tourism attracts millions of visitors to towns and communities across the country every year and I look forward to welcoming Guinness to the roster of excellent breweries we have here in Maryland."

Maryland Comptroller Peter Franchot said, "Today's announcement is an exciting development for Maryland's thriving tourism industry and our state's burgeoning, award-winning brewing sector. The Guinness facility will be a strong boost for our economy by creating good-paying jobs for Marylanders and by attracting visitors from across the region and the country. I am optimistic that all stakeholders will come together and work collaboratively with the General Assembly to ensure that this innovative project moves forward."

"Baltimore County is thrilled that Diageo is reviving an historic building with the iconic Guinness brand. The brewery and tap house has all the hallmarks to become a popular tourist destination and will be a perfect complement to our local craft breweries," said Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz.

Tom Quirk, Chair of the Baltimore County Council whose district encompasses the Relay site, stated, "More than just a brewery, this is a significant investment in our community that represents a new direction for the historic Relay facility. Leveraging Guinness' 250 years of brewing heritage and capitalizing on its great location for welcoming visitors to Baltimore County, this will be a strong boost for tourism, not only in the county, but the entire region."

President Jason Chorpenning of the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 27, which currently represents employees at Diageo's Relay facility, also expressed support, saying, "UFCW Local 27 is very excited about the prospect of a brewing operation in the Baltimore market, and the potential for more jobs and membership in our great local union. We wholly support any legislation necessary to make this opportunity happen, and we will work with Diageo to ensure the success of this endeavor."

Prominent Maryland restaurateur, Mark Loundas of Bill Bateman's Bistro commented, "What an exciting announcement for tourism in Baltimore County and the state of Maryland. I know that this Guinness brewery project will benefit the entire hospitality industry including hotels, beverage alcohol retailers and other tourist destinations throughout our region."

Diageo hopes to receive approvals and to begin construction this spring with the goal of opening the brewery this fall to mark the 200th anniversary of Guinness being first imported into the US. 

As reported in Diageo's half-yearly financial results last week, Diageo Beer Company USA organic net sales increased 3%.

Urban Chestnut & Ommegang Collaborate On Urbangang Belgian-Style Lager

Today you get your very first peek at a new collaboration beer coming from Urban Chestnut and Brewery Ommegang.  This is Urbangang and it is a Belgian-style lager brewed with spices.  Ommegang brewed Urban Chestnut’s German-style doppelbock and fermented it with their Belgian house yeast and Urban Chestnut brewed Ommegang’s Belgian-style dubbel and fermented it with their Zwickel yeast…and this is the result.  Look for Urbangang to be packaged in 500ml bottles and stay tuned for release details.


Funky Buddha Adding Limited Distribution Of Maple Bacon Coffee Porter

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL  --- When a beer is really good and has devoted fans, should a brewery make more of it and sell it year round or limit supply to once a year release only at the brewery? That’s the dilemma Funky Buddha Brewery in Oakland Park, FL faced with its wildly popular Maple Bacon Coffee Porter Beer since it was first released in 2011.

Funky Buddha had opted to limit supply and distribution as a way to keep the beer with the sticky, rich and sweet flavor of maple syrup special. That meant anyone who wanted the beer that won medals at numerous beer events would have to attend the annual Maple Bacon Coffee Porter Beer festival outside the brewery to try it and buy 22-oz bottles. “We are lucky to have this brand that really resonates with people…and we didn’t want demand to outstrip supply,” said Funky Buddha spokesman John Linn.

But after the beer won a gold medal at the World Beer Cup last year, brewery owners decided it was no longer a good business decision to only make the beer available once a year. "We want more people to try it,” Linn said.

So starting in February, bottles of Maple Bacon Coffee Porter will be available at retail outlets across Florida. It will still be limited supply but people from across the state won’t have to track to the Fort Lauderdale area for a taste. Don’t expect those bottles to last long and when they’re gone, they’re gone until next winter.

Maple Bacon will be more widely distributed but won’t be joining Funky Buddha’s list of year-round releases which are Floridian, a hefeweizen; Hop Gun, an IP; and Hop Stimulator, a double IPA. Instead, the brewery will be selling Pineapple Beach, as its fourth year round offering. Pineapple Beach is a tropical blonde ale is kissed with gnarly waves of juicy pineapple. A dose of floral, American hops and crisp pilsner malt ties this beer together, making it full of flavor and light-bodied.

The decision to more widely distribute Maple Bacon Coffee Porter did little to diminish fan attendance at the annual Maple Bacon Porter Beer Festival which on Jan. 14 attracted over 2,500 people who paid $55 or more to attend. That entitled them to sample unlimited tasting of 80+ beers from Funky Buddha and a couple dozen beers from other breweries, including many that aren’t available in the Sunshine State. This included 3 Floyd’s Zombie Dust, Cigar City’s Hunapu Imperial Stout and Hardywood Park Craft Brewery’s Kentucky Christmas Morning.

Funky Buddha’s 55 beers included its usual mix of unusual but tasty beers including ‘Butta Cup, Barrel-Aged French Toast, Strawberry Shortcake and Morning Wood, a barrel aged imperial Maple Bacon Coffee Porter.

Stone Releases Tangerine Express IPA Nationwide 1/30

We brought you a peek, and now this from Stone:

Imagine the tropical haze of a lazy afternoon- into-evening. Your official duties for the day have been to maybe take a hike to a secluded waterfall, perhaps grill something, definitely chill with plenty of sand between your toes…and crack a phenomenal beer to complete the experience. Check, check, check again and…pfffft…check. 


This ain’t no just-add-juice approach. This one is for adults. We use bountiful whole tangerine purée, which brings pithy, crisp bitterness to the citrus flavor. In addition to the complexities of the tangerine — the likes of which you can only get by using the whole fruit — we judiciously employ just a hint of whole pineapple for a backnote (you’d likely not even pick it out of the mix if we didn’t tell you it was there). We’re not looking for a sweet concoction to appease the “I want my beer to taste like fruit juice” crowd. This is Stone. We like our IPAs to taste like IPAs. Big, bold and not for kids.

ESCONDIDO, CA (February 1, 2017) – Today, Stone Brewing announces the newest addition to its lineup of year-round offerings, Stone Tangerine Express IPA. Packed with whole tangerine and pineapple, this is Stone and this IPA is big, bold and not for kids. Stone Tangerine Express IPA will debut in bars, restaurants and stores where Stone beers are sold beginning this week.

From time to time Stone is able produce small batches of beer for special events. In this case Steve Gonzalez, Stone’s Senior Manager of Small Batch Brewing & Innovation, worked with Jake Karley, Director of Beverages & Special Projects, P.J. Whelihan’s Pub & Restaurant in the Philadelphia/South New Jersey area to come up with this original beer for the 2016 Craft Brewers Conference in Philadelphia.

“Together they landed on a beer that is really hoppy but at the same time has incredible fruit flavor, which was achieved by using high-quality, whole fruit,” said Jeremy Moynier, Senior Innovation Brewing Manager. “When I tasted it with our co-founder, Greg Koch, and other members of our leadership and sales team, we loved it so much so that we went back to San Diego to hatch the plan for a future nationwide release. Greg was particularly adamant that this beer should be in our year-round lineup and personally championed it through the process. I love that it’s a great hoppy beer but has just the right amount of fresh fruit with a complex, pithy quality to balance it out.”

Stone Tangerine Express IPA pours light golden in color with an aroma that’s bright, juicy and tropical. Stone’s brewers used whole tangerine puree to capture the essence of the bright flavors of the fruit with the addition of whole pineapple for a subtle, yet lingering backnote. Neither the hops nor the fruit dominate, yet together they create several complex fruit layers, which can only be achieved by brewing with the entire fruit. Eight different hops give this beer its marked dankness overtones and refreshing bitterness. It’s an express ticket to a beach hammock getaway with refreshing drink in hand, complete with real fruit character and Stone’s signature bold hop bitterness.

Appearance: Light golden with slight haze.

Left Hand Brewing Adds Portland OR Distribution

Left Hand - Braveheart Nitro Scottish-Style Ale

Here we have another new Nitro bottle coming from Left Hand Brewing in Longmont, CO.  This is Braveheart Nitro and it is a Scottish-style ale that is a “collaboration between Randall Wallace of the file Braveheart and Left Hand co-founder Eric Wallace.”   This beer swings in at 5.5%-AbV and you’re looking at the 12oz bottle.


Half Acre - Benthic Stout & Orin Ale 22oz Bottles

Today we get to see two new Bourbon barrel-aged bottles coming from Half Acre Beer in Chicago, ILBenthic Stout is a Bourbon barrel-aged imperial stout with coffee and coconut added.  This beer hits 12.3%-AbV.  We also have Orin Ale and it is an ale aged in Bourbon barrels that hits 13.7%-AbV.  These are both 22oz bottles and stay tuned for release details.


5 Rabbit Cerveceria Adding Indiana Distribution

5 Rabbit Cervecería has announced expanded distribution plans, partnering with Cavalier Distributing as their distributor for Indiana. Cavalier also distributes 5 Rabbit in Florida and Ohio.

Beginning February 6, Cavalier will distribute draught versions of 5 Rabbit’s beers including 5 Lizard Passionfruit Witbier, 5 Vulture Oaxacan-Style Dark Ale, Gringolandia Super Pils, Gringolandia Irónica IPA, and Yodo con Leche Imperial Porter. Package will be released this spring, as well as seasonal and limited releases as they are available.

Starr Hill Pilot Brewery & Side Stage Coming to Star City: Roanoke, VA

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA - (January 31, 2017) Starr Hill Brewery is excited to announce the opening of its Pilot Brewery & Side Stage location in Roanoke, Virginia. Starr Hill’s first satellite taproom, scheduled to open Fall 2017, will serve as a venue to showcase new beers and new music, with innovative brewers and local artists creating side by side in the Star City of the South.

Starr Hill Pilot Brewery & Side Stage will house a custom 5-barrel brewing system, the company’s first for producing small batches since moving from its original brewpub location in 2005. The pilot system will provide Starr Hill with increased flexibility for brewing upwards of 50 limited release batches of ales, lagers and wild beers each year, led by Brewmaster Robbie O’Cain.

“With flagship brands taking precedence at our production facility in Crozet, this pilot system presents us with the opportunity to really show off our brewing talents and new ideas to fans in Roanoke and beyond,” says O’Cain. “Both facilities supporting each other allows us to create a variety of unique styles with virtually infinite access to the best hops and malts in the industry.”

The Side Stage portion of the taproom will feature live performances several nights a week from up-and-coming artists in the rich tradition of local music from Southwest Virginia. Starr Hill will host a quarterly showcase concert at the brewery to celebrate the best in new music paired with new beer releases. Additional programming and events will be cultivated through partnerships with local artisans, record shops, music venues, and a variety of food trucks from the area.

“Starr Hill’s identity, from the Charlottesville Music Hall to pouring beer at the first FloydFest, is deeply rooted in live music,” says Jack Goodall, Marketing Manager for Starr Hill Brewery. “Roanoke is going to be a great fit for Starr Hill with our shared history and culture of experiencing music and life outdoors in the beautiful Blue Ridge.”

The Starr Hill Pilot Brewery & Side Stage will be housed within a historic building on 6 Old Whitmore Avenue in the redeveloped industrial neighborhood of
The Bridges, part of Downtown Roanoke’s Riverside District. In the shadow of Mill Mountain and the Roanoke Star, train tracks of the Norfolk Southern Railway neighboring the new location echo the setting at Starr Hill’s main production facility, just north on the Blue Ridge Parkway in Crozet. Nearby attractions include the Roanoke River Greenway, a kayak/canoe launch site, and Dr. Pepper Park outdoor event venue.

“Starr Hill Pilot Brewery and Side Stage completes our vision of a versatile mix of amenities on the Jefferson side of The Bridges,” says Aaron Ewert, Project Manager at The Bridges. “Not only are they the largest independent craft brewery in Virginia, Starr Hill is also one of the best breweries on the East Coast with 22 medals from major beer competitions. Naked City Brewing Announces 2nd Location - Camano Island

Camano Island, WA – Naked City Brewing is thrilled to announce the launch of its second location, a new brewpub at Terry’s Corner on the north end of Camano Island opening in Spring of 2017. 

Naked City Camano Island features the award-winning beers that established Naked City Brewery & Taphouse in Seattle as a world-class brewpub, along with gourmet comfort food and the best art and culture in the Northwest. The film noir-themed watering hole offers 12 rotating house-brewed beers, plus local ciders and wines, craft soda, a dedicated Ghostfish gluten-free beer tap, and a scratch kitchen sourcing from Camano Island farms and local vendors. 

“We love Camano Island already, and couldn’t be more excited to join the great community there,” said Don Webb, Naked City’s head brewer and co-founder. Webb is concocting a new brew called Easy Island Pale Ale in honor of the grand opening, which, along with Naked City's other beers, will be available in crowlers to go as well as on draft.  

Executive Chef Tessa Roberts designed a rotating seasonal food menu for Camano Island, featuring fresh vegetables grown for the brewpub by Camano Island farmers. Naked City’s beloved favorites, including the award-winning beet burger, Naked Burger, and hand-cut fries, headline a menu that includes vegetarian and gluten-free fare. 

The Ko-lut-chen Beer Garden at Naked City Camano Island is adjacent to the grass outdoor amphitheater anchoring Terry’s Corner. In summer, the pub will feature film, theater, music, and art events, and in the winter, a holiday tree with lights and a visit from Brew Santa. The brewpub boasts a library and rotating art gallery, with classic movies playing on the bar TVs.

Worthy Brewing - Stoker Red Ale Coming To Cans

Worthy Brewing is adding a fifth can to their  stellar line-up this spring. Introducing Stoker Red Ale, a beer designed to stoke the passions of hop and malt lovers. Stoker Red will be available in 12 ounce cans this April.

Several months ago Worthy put on hold Eruption Imperial Red, a move that left a hole in Worthy’s diverse portfolio. Brewmaster Dustin Kellner decided to fill that gap with a more sessionable red that contains many of the same ingredients.

For bittering, Kellner added Nugget and Horizon. And for aroma and flavor, he added Oregon workhorses Cascade and Centennial and topped it off with Mandarina Bavaria, a German hop whose mother is Cascade. The final numbers should come in around 6.6% ABV and 66 IBU.

“Passionate about hoppy reds?  Stoker is fuel for your firebox,” said Roger Worthington, Worthy Brewing’s Founder.  “Stoker Red Ale has a tantalizing lemon and tangerine aroma and flavor with a satisfying malt sweetness. Like Eruption, it sports the same citrusy flavor and amazing balance, without the big in your face numbers.”

The can will feature a swarthy brewer in his rubber boots stoking the kettle with a shovel piled high with big juicy hop cones. Kegs will be distributed by Columbia Distribution in Oregon and Washington, Hodgen Distributing in Eastern Oregon, and by Hayden Beverage in Idaho.


Stone Brewing Receives Multiple Awards from RateBeer

RateBeer Best, an annual online competition in its fifteenth year with a live award ceremony in Santa Rosa, California, summarizes millions of reviews on over 470,000 beers from the world’s most avid beer enthusiasts, some with over 40,000 reviews. The review scores were tallied to produce the year’s best beers, brewers, and beer retailers worldwide.

The RateBeer Best 2017 awards ceremony was attended by brewers from across North America, Europe, South America and Asia. However, the event is as exclusive as it is large, as far fewer than 1% of all brewers are awarded RateBeer honors. Stone Brewing received a total of six awards at this year’s ceremony.
