- Help Us Amp Up Our Beer Calendar

30 November 2016

For the last 6-years we’ve been maintaining the Beer Calendar and doing our best to populate it with beer events.  Unfortunately, when I say “maintaining” I really mean that I’ve been manually entering most every event by hand.  This has always been a compromise because I simply can’t post about every beer event sent my way (about 30+ per/week); so as a compromise I enter them into the Beer Calendar instead.

Because this hasn’t been very effective and I do want this to be a valuable beer resource, I’m asking for your help.

I’m Google Calendar based, so I’m looking for someone willing to either share their existing beer calendar in Google Calendar format OR someone willing to create, maintain and share a beer calendar.  This is NOT limited to just one person.  If you want to just publish beer events for your region or state, that’s great.  I’ll take what I can get.  If this is something that benefits your beer-related club, brewery or bar, that’s cool too as long as the events relate to beer.  If this is something that helps create traffic for your site, that’s cool too, again as long as the events relate to beer.

If you’re interested, please hit me up at

UPDATE:  We have integrated our FaceBook calendar, so invite me to your beer event and your event will show up on the calendar automatically.

The Lost Abbey Releasing Santo Ron Diego - Rum Barrel Aged Dark Strong Ale with Cherries, Vanilla, & Cacao Nibs

imageFrom The Lost Abbey:

San Marcos, CA, -- First released in 2015, Santo Ron Diego will make another appearance, this time with a slightly different flavor profile with the addition of Cherries, Vanilla, and Cacao nibs.

Aged in Rum barrels for 14 months, Santo Ron Diego starts with a base of a dark strong ale, brewed specifically to contrast and accentuate the sweetness of the Rum barrels. Santo Ron Diego is then rested on Cherries, Vanilla beans, and Cacao nibs.

“Getting a chance to work with rum-barrels again has been quite an adventure” said Tomme Arthur, COO and Co-founder of The Lost Abbey. “We were really happy with last year’s version but we wanted to add a bit more complexity to help bring the rum notes out with this year’s batch.”

Santo Ron Diego begins with a bouquet of Cherries, Vanilla and sweet oak that leads to burst of flavor on the palate. Dark bakers chocolate, sweet cherry and warming vanilla with just a hint of coconut, Santo finishes with smooth hints of sweet-spiced rum.

Santo Ron Diego with Cherries, Vanilla, and Cacao Nibs, at 13.5% ABV, will be available throughout the Lost Abbey distribution network beginning in December. Due to the limited amount of beer produced, this will be a draft-only release.

Yards Brewing & Philadelphia Distilling Collaborate On Tough Broad Malt Whiskey (300 Bottles Only-SOLD OUT)

From Yards:

We've always wondered what would happen if we tried to distill from one of our base malts. To help us in our experiment, we called on our friends at Philadelphia Distilling. They are leaders in the local craft spirit movement who share the same commitment to quality and community as we do. Plus, it gave us a chance to sample beer and whiskey during "business hours.”

After a few meetings, we settled on a recipe loosely based on
Thomas Jefferson's Tavern Ale and sent it to our Philadelphia Distilling friends to work their magic. They initially distilled in a small still to fine tune the recipe.

After perfecting it, they ran the final product through a Forsyth’s 1500L copper pot still twice before aging the whiskey in a high charred 53-gallon new American oak barrel. The end result is a 90-proof spirit with beer-like flavors and aromas.

Tough Broad Whiskey LogoEven though this is a high-quality product and we’re dedicated to our craft, we’re also having fun and not taking things too seriously. Tough Broad is a name that roots us where we live. It’s a tribute to Philly's underdog spirit, its history and character.

Look for hints of caramel, toffee, and vanilla, warm spices like cinnamon, and a little bit of wood on the nose. This is where you'll pick up on the malt character from the beer base. Take a sip and notice those sweet, round malty flavors, a spiciness up front then wood dryness at the end.

Pre-order now by contacting Pete at Philadelphia Distilling. Call (215) 671-0346 x13 or email

We only have 300 bottles available from this inaugural batch of Tough Broad! Each 375mL bottle is $45 and there is a limit of two bottles per customer, so we strongly encourage you to pre-order.

Join us for the Tough Broad Pick-Up Party on December 15th from 5-7pm at Philadelphia Distilling's new Fishtown location (25 E. Allen St). You'll receive your pre-ordered whiskey and get a sneak peak inside their new digs. Plus you'll get the chance to chat about the collaboration with both companies' founders while sipping on a complimentary Bluecoat Gin cocktail or Yards beer. Win-win-win-win?

You'll also find find Tough Broad at select Philly bars for a limited time. This list will grow, but start with Olde Bar, Village Whiskey, TIME, Urban Farmer, Charlie Was a Sinner, Whetstone, and Wm. Mulherin’s.

Update 6 Dec 2016:

The pre-sale of #ToughBroad is SOLD OUT!
A few more bottles may become available, so we will continue to collect names to add on the waiting list. Contact Pete,

Full Sail Brewing’s Annual Session Fest is Here to Save Christmas

imageFrom Full Sail:

Hood River, OR – November 30, 2016 – It’s not a fest until it’s a Session Fest. One of Full Sail Brewing’s annual favorites, gold-medal winning Session Fest is a holiday beer that comes in a stubby little bottle, makes a great stocking stuffer, and is the perfect beer to leave by the fireplace for Santa or to share with friends and family who may appreciate an approachable, yet flavorful holiday beer.

“When we decided to brew a special Session for the holidays, we knew right away what color it had to be: Red (& full-bodied),” says Full Sail Brewmaster Jim Kelter. “Next, we considered what kind of head it should have. Bright white was the obvious answer. And as for the label? Gotta be green, right? So, there you have it. A Session all decked out for holidays, ready to spread joy and cheer. Happy Holidays to one and all! And have a good Session.”

“Session Fest is a Czech-style strong lager (gotta love the Czechs!) called polotmavé or literally ‘light dark or semi-dark,’” according to Full Sail Executive Brewmaster Jamie Emmerson. “Brewed with 2 Row Pale malt, Munich malt, Caramel malt and Wheat malt, and hopped with a blend of Glaciers and Cascades, Session Fest has a medium-to-full body, balancing candy caramel and full malt flavors that are underscored by a spicy hoppiness that provides a nice perfume with citrus and pine overtones and a long clean finish.”

When Full Sail launched the Session brand over 10 years ago, it quickly became the hottest new craft-beer brand on the market, which has since brought home 100 medals, including 40 golds. Session’s not a micro, a macro, or an import, but in a way, it’s a little bit of each. You see, virtually everyone who likes beer likes Session. It’s a brand that’s accessible without being ordinary. Totally drinkable, but never at the expense of character. And now, just for the holidays, there’s Session Fest. Taste for yourself why the World Beer Championships has awarded Session Fest a gold medal in the Vienna-style lager category in 2011, 2013 and, for this year’s batch, in 2016.  6.2% ABV, 26 IBUs.  Available September to December in 12-packs, Session Mashup Variety Pack and draft.

Firestone Walker Adding Hawaii Distribution in Jan 2017

imageFrom Firestone Walker:

Paso Robles, CA—The beers of Firestone Walker Brewing Company are ready to set sail from California’s Central Coast to the Aloha State with distribution across Hawaii scheduled to launch in January 2017 by Young’s Market Company.

Firestone Walker will begin its draft rollout on January 16, 2017, followed by packaged beer in mid-March. The featured Firestone beers will be Luponic Distortion, Easy Jack, Union Jack and Pivo, as well as the affiliated 805.

“It’s the right time for us to enter Hawaii,” said David Macon, the brewery’s vice-president of sales & marketing. “More than a third of visitors to Hawaii come from the mainland western U.S., and half of those are from California alone, so we will find plenty of old friends there while making new ones as well.”

Macon added, “Craft beer is firmly established in Hawaii with great local brewers. These pioneers make tremendous beers and they have educated residents and visitors alike. We’re honored to come to Hawaii and work alongside them.”

Once the Hawaii distribution launches, Firestone Walker’s national distribution map will total 27 states.

“We are excited to work with Young’s Market Co in Hawaii,” Macon said. “They have one of the freshest approaches to beer sales. They are somewhat new to the craft space but have proven themselves above and beyond the norm with excellent execution.”

“Young’s Market Company is proud to expand Firestone Walker’s geographic footprint to the Hawaiian market,” said Rick Gillis, president of Young’s Market Company. “We share Firestone Walker’s high standards for quality, innovation and brand growth. Firestone Walker is a strong addition to our growing premium beer portfolio at Young’s Market Company.”

Perrin, Oskar Blues & Cigar City Collaborate On Triangulation For Florida Launch

imageFrom Perrin Brewing:

Perrin Brewing is excited to announce distribution in the Florida market beginning in February 2017 and the launch of a specialty collaboration brew. To kick off this new launch, Perrin has invited their fellow brewery partners at Oskar Blues Brewery and Cigar City Brewing to create a one-time batch of an Imperial Oatmeal Stout, “Triangulation”. This collaboration will take place on December 1st.

John Stewart, Director of Brewing Operations at Perrin Brewing stated, “This opportunity is a great privilege to deliberately push the boundaries with this collaboration brew by layering numerous specialty malts & a multitude of experimental hops from all over the world with the specific intention of creating a complex and nuanced twist on the style.”

John Stewart of Perrin, Tim Matthews of Oskar Blues and Wayne Wambles of Cigar City intend on crafting their interpretation of an Imperial Oatmeal Stout, “Triangulation”. From the minds of these three brewers “Triangulation” is a big bodied, robust Oatmeal Stout brewed with a wide-spectrum of malts from around the globe, experimental hops, and a special London ale yeast strain. “Triangulation” is a beer that showcases the strength and unity through the sum of all parts.

“We decided to create a rich but approachable strong stout. It will have dark caramel components. We are using experimental hop HBC-472 which can provide vanilla, macaroon, and even barrel notes,” stated Wayne Wambles of Cigar Cigar Brewing.

The end result of the Imperial Oatmeal Stout is 9% ABV and 60 IBUs. Perrin Brewing is eager to use this collaboration beer as the next launch into distribution of the Florida craft beer scene starting in 2017. This 4-pack beer is made only available in Michigan and Florida markets.

“Being a craft brewer means brewing with a personality and collaboration gives different perspectives and experiences an opportunity to mash up something new and creative. Coming together with Cigar City and Perrin, we all scrutinized every ingredient of a big, dark, malty Imperial Stout and twisted each slightly,” quoted Tim Matthews of Oskar Blues Brewery. “The culmination will be the sum of these subtle twists and bring new perspective on what an Imperial Oatmeal Stout can be.”

The combination of three brewery cultures, communities, and creativity into one collaboration is what makes this beer and relationship unique. Perrin Brewing is honored to collaborate and have the privilege to craft along side Oskar Blues Brewing and Cigar City Brewing.

Shmaltz - He'brew Beer Releases 4 Limited-Edition Offerings for Chanukah

imageFrom Shmaltz:

Clifton Park, NY -- Wednesday, November 30, 2016 -- When people hear the word 'Score' they likely picture their favorite sports team or a piece of music that touched their hearts, or perhaps a shady back alley deal from days of youthful indiscretions. For the finale of 2016 and at this significant milestone of maturity, Shmaltz Brewing Company looks at the word Score in a more expansive sense -- Biblical (Psalm 90), Presidential (4 score and 7 years), Historical ('I Have a Dream'). The Score defined for Shmaltz's Anniversary marks 20 years.

20 Years -- celebrating being the largest, the smallest, the most award winning, and astonishingly still the only Jewish celebration beer in the country. And also 20 years as a complex borscht of much more as well -- creating brands, selling brands, acquiring brands. Reinventing the company to reflect the new brick and mortar facility. Transforming from exclusively contracting brewing with another producer to now being a contract brewer itself for other respected regional beer companies.

Born in San Francisco, raised in Brooklyn and New York City, and now based in Upstate New York, Shmaltz more than ever reaches beyond its niche to the ongoing revolution of craft brewing succeeding across the globe.

Created as an experiment for Chanukah in 1996, Shmaltz owner/founder, Jeremy Cowan, gathered a small tribe of friends to hand squeeze pomegranates to add to the first batch of He'brew Beer's Genesis Ale®. Hand bottled, hand labeled, and delivered by the founder in his grandmother's Volvo (and 5 cases by Cowan's mother as well), He'brew became the Chosen Beer for a generation of those taking their first steps into the artisan world of craft beer.

Leap forward 20 years later, Genesis 20:20®, a mighty barrel-aged tart barleywine percolates from a 40,000 square feet brewery and travels to nearly 40 states across the country. Over 30 professional tribe members comprise the Shmaltz efforts, continuing to amass over 40 awards and counting. Through this trek, Shmaltz maintains its enduring sense of shtick that paved the way to this milestone.
Shmaltz isn't going through
this Score alone, but joins an illustrious lineup of fellow Class of '96ers across the US. For Chicago Beer Week, the 20th anniversary festivities kicked off with Three Floyds Brewing at Northdown Taproom, pouring a all-star lineup of Shmaltz's Goliaths, such as She'Brew Triple IPA®, R.I.P.A. on Rye Barrel-Aged Rye Double IPA®, and the preview cask of Genesis 20:20®. In San Francisco, Shmaltz teamed up with ThirstyBear Organic Brewery for its own 20th anniversary jubilee and raised a pint to where it all began. In Denver at GABF, Shmaltz joined Bear Republic, Coronado, and Ballast Point at iconic Falling Rock Tap House. Most recently at The Well in Brooklyn, NY, Shmaltz founder/owner Jeremy Cowan hosted a special "Beer School" for attending craft beer enthusiasts, launching Jewbelation 20®. The hoopla continues nationwide with fellow "Class of '96" breweries throughout the holidays. And what would a true celebration be without the proper beers to mark this epic occasion?

New Releases

Genesis 20:20® -- Barrel-Aged Tart Barleywine
Flowing from the bottle or tap, a rich beautiful mahogany glows deeply with a dense silky lace head. Aromas of currant, raisin, and toffee waft from the heavenly concoction, leaning towards port, sherry or cognac. The velvety mouthfeel of this burly beer collides on the tongue with pronounced flavors of dark chocolate and heavy fruits -- figs, dates, and ripe plum. Tart notes and a hint of wood emerge from the barrel aging process -- 10 months ensconced in the rye and bourbon barrels that also create Shmaltz's acclaimed sour blend, Funky Jewbelation®. A glorious opus.

Chanukah, Hanukkah...Pass the Beer® -- Golden Strong Ale with Cocoa Nibs
Candles won't be the only thing getting lit this year, with this bright caramel colored, golden strong ale. The fluffy white head releases notes of honey, chocolate, and harkens back to memories of Holiday gelt coins. 8 malts & 8 hops balance biscuit and toast with light peach smoothly dancing with the chocolate from the cocoa nibs and a hint of vanilla on the finish. The 8% ABV warms up both the season and this luscious libation.

Jewbelation 20® -- Dark American Strong Ale
Mazel Tov -- it's a big beautiful bouncing barelywine! Shmaltz's Jewbelation® series vaults into adulthood with the 13th version of its acclaimed seasonal Anniversary offering. Not intended as an imperial porter or stout, Jewbelation 20® essentially stands as a triple brown ale. Pouring a dense mocha head, the color spans deep maroon to dark ruby. Flavors of this massive complex malt bill overflow with dark fruits -- bing cherry, raisins, currants, and figs. Pronounced notes of pumpernickel and dark chocolate, coffee roast and cherry wood dance with pounds and pounds of hops leading with citrus and stone fruit up front melding into a grassy earthiness on the finish. Rising to a beefy 16.8%, the alcohol feels more warming and welcoming than its percentage might suggest. A very complex anniversary ale worthy of being part of the Jewbelation family. A new Shmaltz score is born.

Shtick in a Box® -- Holiday Variety 12-Pack
There's no junk in this box! Just in time for the holidays, Shmaltz releases the award winning Shtick in a Box® Holiday Variety 12-Pack. Shmaltz has somethin' real special to give you inside this package. Craft beer lovers will find three Shmaltz favorites and all World Beer Championship Gold Medal winners, Hop Manna IPA®, Slingshot American Craft Lager®, and Messiah Nut Brown Ale®, with a gift of the 2016 version of Chanukah, Hanukkah...Pass the Beer®. You won't even need to wrap this platinum award-winning package, unless it'd be for safety.

The grand finale is upon us -- The opus, the grand slam, the kind, the Score. With brewery favorites, Hop Manna IPA®, Slingshot American Craft Lager®, Messiah Nut Brown Ale®, and Bittersweet Lenny's RIPA®, over a dozen seasonals, special releases and collaborations, and now the lineup of behemoth anniversary beers, Genesis 20:20® and Jewbelation 20®, the culmination of Shmaltz's 20th year overflows with unforgettable fermentables.

Turning 21 in 2017, Shmaltz is poised to pair its unique shtick with a diversified business model including innovative He'brew creations, the acquisition and expansion of its regional Alphabet City brand, the re-introduction of its hyperlocal upstate 518 & 838 series, as well as expanded contract brewing for respected regional producers.

Cheers to the first Score, and maybe 3 more and 7 years, of Shmaltz being true to its roots and singular in its niche -- the largest, the smallest, the most award winning, and still the only Jewish celebration brewery in the country -- and so much more. To Life... L'Chaim!

Straub Brewery Releases 2016/2017 Winter Seasonal: Groundhog Altbier

imageFrom Straub:

St. Marys, PA – Straub Brewery is launching its newest batch of limited-release Straub Groundhog Altbier. The traditional, German-style, winter seasonal ale is available in 12-packs throughout Pennsylvania and Eastern Ohio while supplies last.

Copper in color, well-hopped, and with a pronounced malt flavor, Straub Altbier is an ideal craft beer for cooler months, as both a favorite libation for guests at holiday gatherings and for a memorable pairing with cozy and celebratory comfort foods.

Straub Brewery craftsmen brew the authentic Altbier every fall with German ingredients—including German pilsner malt, German ale yeast, and imported German hops—for a firm, bitter, and Honestly Fresh™ edge.

“This is the 5th-year we have brewed Straub Altbier for our winter seasonal beer to celebrate the holiday season, which in this part of the world isn’t over until Groundhog Day,” said Straub Brewmaster Vince Assetta. “The Altbier style harkens back to the early era of German brewing when the beers were ales. Even when lager beer became all the rage in the nineteenth century, the Rhinelanders stubbornly stuck to their old tradition of ale brewing. Kind of reminds us of the history here at Straub, and our Fiercely Independent ways! So put on some lederhosen, cook some brats and kraut, and open a bottle of Straub Altbier.”

For parties and other gatherings, Straub Altbier pairs well with such favorites as:

Finger foods like deviled eggs, bruschetta, shrimp, and sourdough pretzels; cheesy dips and hummus; ham and turkey dinners; smoked sausage; venison steaks and chili; winter soups; sweet-marinated tofu, tempeh, or seitan; brunch classics like scrambled eggs and French Toast; New Year’s sauerkraut; and popular bar eats, such as pizza, hot wings, deep-fried pickles, and onion rings. Also, for homemade dishes, adding a few tablespoons or a full bottle of Straub Altbier can transform every bite of an appetizer or main course into a memorable feast.

Off Color Brewing Adding NewTaproom In Lincoln Park

imageFrom Chicago Business:

The Chicago-based brewery, known for its monochromatic bottle labels and niche beers, has applied for licenses to open a second brewery and its first taproom at 1460 N. Kingsbury St. in Lincoln Park, co-owner John Laffler confirmed to Crain's.

Roughly half of the 8,000 square-foot space will be devoted to brewing and barrel-aging, while the other half is dedicated for a taproom with capacity for roughly 150 people.

Half of the taproom will look much like a straight-up tavern, with a long, wooden bar and long beer-hall-like wooden tables. The other half will be a quieter, lounge-like space with couches and other upholstered furniture that overlooks barrels and wooden vats used to age Off Color beer.

Stone Releasing Enjoy After 12.24.16 Brett IPA Nationwide

29 November 2016

From Stone:

This IPA is spiked with Brettanomyces, a special yeast that, over time, brings about charmingly unpredictable complexities of spice, funk, acidity and more. We start the counterintuitive part for you by aging the beer — first in tanks, then in bottles — for a total of four months, which is plenty to get the funky part(y) started. Consider cellaring it, however, up to (or beyond) the Enjoy After date to help the beer reach its full evolutionary potential. Individual results will vary…and that’s both the beauty and the intent behind this beer.

Three Taverns Third Age Coming 12/17

Anchor Adding NEW Blood Orange Blonde & Blackberry Daze IPA

Today we get our very first look at two new fruit-forward beers coming from Anchor Brewing.  Blood Orange Blonde is a blonde ale brewed with blood oranges.  This beer will hit 4.5%-AbV and you’re looking at the 12oz can (kegs & 12oz bottles coming too--below).  We also have Blackberry Daze IPA and it is an IPA with blackberries added during secondary fermentation.  This beer will hit 6.5%-AbV and it will be packaged in 12oz bottles and kegs (below).  Stay tuned here for 2017 release details.

From The Label:

Blackberry Daze IPA is a synergistic union of blackberries & hops. Because the blackberry was once wildly rampant in California, it is our ideal choice for this singular Anchor brew. Blackberry Daze gets its hop bitterness and some of its hop aroma in the brewhouse. Most of the action, however, is in the cellar, where the fruit is added during secondary fermentation. A special blend of loamy, herbaceous hops for dry-hopping complements the brightness and deep complexity of the blackberries. The result is a funky synthesis of rich earth & ripe fruit, hop bitterness and blackberry tartness, with alluring color and aromas up front, sublimely intense flavors, and a refreshingly dryish finish.
