Fancy Fortune - Beer Flavored Fortune Cookies - A First Sampling

As a beer writer, I thought I had tasted everything you can make with beer.  Beer bread, beer soup, beer cheese, beer candy and even beer cheesecake…but Fancy Fortune Cookies has proven me wrong with their new  Beer Flavored Fortune Cookies.

I’ll admit I have a sweet tooth, and you all know how much I love craft beer, so this sampling was right up my alley.  First off, you have to realize that Fancy Fortune Cookies has some amazing Fortune Cookies…and these are not your grandmother’s fortune cookies.  I’m talking chocolate dipped, various colors, iced cookies, caramel covered, giant cookies, bling fortune cookies, sprinkles and even 25 different flavors…and of course they sent me Beer Flavored.

Coming to us from Indianapolis, Fancy Fortune Cookies is located across the street from Bier Brewery & Tap Room, so the idea of Beer Flavored Fortune Cookies is a perfect fit.  The Beer Flavored fortune cookies use Bier’s Weizenbock German Hefe as part of the batter and you’d be surprised how much of that beer does shine through in the cookies.  The cookies are crispy and have the classic shape of fortune cookies, but the flavor is distinct.  I picked up some subtle banana flavors from the Weizenbock and a little vanilla at the end.  All in all  a very nice cookie, and I can only imagine just how good they must be in caramel or chocolate dips.

The cookies have fun fortunes like “Keep calm and use the force,” and “There are some questions that can’t be answered by Google.”  And as if that’s not fun enough, you can even order cookies with custom personalized fortune cookie sayings.  Think how much fun these individually wrapped cookies with your personalized sayings would be at a beer party or even wedding.

Anchor Brewing & BrewDog Announce Plans for US Production & Distribution

commences plans to build a brewery in Ohio, Anchor will continue to import and sell

BrewDog to be brewed in the U.S. Also, that in managing its own brewery, it would be

best to manage distribution, too.”

“Anchor has helped us appreciate the complexity of the U.S. beer market. We are

now set to transition from being an import to a domestically produced beer,” stated

James Watt, Co-Founder and Captain of BrewDog PLC. “Our U.S .TV show

‘BrewDogs’ has generated a great deal of interest in our beers. In inheriting a national

distribution footprint from Anchor, we will be in a unique position to serve those fans

easily and quickly with our new Ohio brewing facility.”

Until BrewDog completes its brewery, likely late 2016, Anchor will continue to serve

as their importer.  As the brewery production schedule is formalized, transition

arrangements will be agreed on a wholesaler by wholesaler basis.

Elevation Beer 4-Packs Coming This Week, Fanboy 7/1

Poncha Springs, Colorado June 30th, 2015- Elevation Beer Company is set to launch their Black Series into four packs this Wednesday, July First, across Colorado.  The four packs mark a change for the brewery, as Elevation previously bottled their Black Series in 750ml bottles.

"Our goal has always been to elevate the perception of beer in America, and the new consumer friendly four packs of 12oz bottles will allow us to get our specialty beers into more hands," says Elevation Co-Founder and Marketing Director Sheila Bustamante.

TRVE Brewing Releases First Beer from The Acid Temple : Life’s Trade

This Friday, July Third, TRVE Brewing will unveil the first bottled offering from the now fully operational Acid Temple. Over a year in the making, we’re completely elated to have our new brewery dedicated to wilds, sours, and all other funk-forward beers up and running. Being able to share this libation with the world is both the end of a long and brutal buildout, and the beginning of a new era for TRVE.

With this beer we are paying homage to tradition with our grain bill and by fermenting in puncheons. We used multiple yeast strains and then blended from the puncheons to produce the final beer. The respect for tradition comes through in the aroma and flavors presented in this beer – we consider this to be one of the most classic beers we’ve produced to date.

This beer – and The Acid Temple as a whole – represents a lot of dedication and soul just like the album it’s named after. And, as cheesy as it sounds, this work really has become our life’s trade. The barrel-aged and sour beers we have been able to produce until this point act as a prologue to what is to come. We thoroughly expect to exceed even our own expectations of what is possible now that we have the increased capacity for projects such as these.

Heavy Seas - Riptide Returns 7/1 & Red Sky At Morning Coming 7/10

Wednesday, July 1st from 3:00 - 9:00pm.


Riptide white IPA is a beer brewed with a malt body similar to a Belgian style Wit with loads of torrified wheat.  It's hopped like an IPA, but we use a unique blend of Czech Saaz, French Strisselspalt, and Cascade hops to create a big citrus nose and flavor with floral accents.  To complete the feel of the wit style, we push the beer through our hopback which is loaded with Spanish sweet orange peel, Curaçao bitter orange peel, coriander, and a generous helping of hops.  It's fermented with a classic Belgian Wit yeast which provides all of the fruity and spicy notes you'd expect.  We then blast the tank with our hop cannon which is loaded with Strisselspalt, and Cascade hops and more orange peel.  The beer is then lightly filtered to retain all of the exceptional yeast character.

Style: White IPA

ABV: 7.25%

IBUs: 45

According to our Brewmaster, Christopher Leonard,  "Red Sky at Night has been a popular seasonal product for us for a few years now.  And, while we do love it, we wanted to explore its "potential" by incorporating it into our "Uncharted Waters" program.  We have never done a white wine barrel-aged beer before, but the core flavors of Red Sky at Night seemed like they would be a good fit for doing so - with a few tweaks, of course.  Red Sky at Morning is a stronger beer than Red Sky at Night.  We added a higher percentage of sugar to the boil, we increased the hop flavor slightly, and we employed a different yeast strain that produced spicier esters.  All in all, we've retained the soul of Red Sky at Night, which is the sailor's delight, while adding flavor and aroma dimensions in a 10% ABV version that definitely fits the bill of Red Sky at Morning - sailor take warning."

Starr Hill Enhances Northern Lights IPA

Take a look at this year’s lineup for your favorite summer music festival. You can bet that the diversity of genres and fans attending looks a lot different from when many popular festivals got their start ten to fifteen years ago. Starr Hill Brewery, and craft beer as a whole, have grown and evolved much in the same way since 1999. What was once a bitter hop bomb is now par for the course in the eyes, or mouth, of the typical craft beer drinker. In addition to creating new and award-winning releases in recent years, enhancements have been made to several existing beers including Starr Hill’s flagship brand, Northern Lights IPA.

Starr Hill debuted Northern Lights, its first take on an American-style India Pale Ale, in 2007 when craft beer was just starting to take hold in this country. It quickly became the brewery’s best-selling beer, known for its characteristic hop blend and full-flavored bitterness. While the soul of the original Northern Lights remains, the new recipe creates a more hop-forward IPA that will be enjoyed by both long-time fans and newcomers.

New hop varieties - including Falconer’s Flight, Simcoe and Centennial - have been added to the mix with Columbus and Cascade. Following in the footsteps of recent IPA releases like Reviver and King of Hop, a greater emphasis was placed on dry hopping and the process of hop bursting. This gives imageNorthern Lights fantastic levels of hop flavor and aroma without adding large amounts of bitterness. A simplified malt bill has also created a more harmonious balance for the base while coarser filtration allows for more flavor and aroma throughout.

5 Rabbit Cerveceria Pulls Beer From Trump Hotel Bar After Campaign Comments

The Bedford Park brewery said it is pulling out from a beer partnership with the Trump Hotel Chicago’s mezzanine-level bar, Rebar (a story first reported by WBEZ), after the sentiment Trump expressed during his June 16 speech: “(Mexico is) sending people that have lots of problems, and they're bringing those problems with us. They're bringing drugs. They're bringing crime. They're rapists. And some, I assume, are good people.”

5 Rabbit founder Andres Araya said the brewery made an easy drinking golden ale for Rebar that was to be available exclusively at the Trump building throughout summer. It has been on tap for at least a month, he said.  However, 5 Rabbit will redirect the approximately 50 remaining kegs to various Chicago bars.

OSKAR BLUES BEER CAN CHICKEN

Ingredients:

1 3-lb delish chicken

1 Oskar Blues CAN of bliss

Salt & pepper Rev. Rog's BBQ Rub

1 beer can holder to hold the can

Covered gas grill that heats to at least 400 degrees

Directions:

  • Heat covered gas grill to 375 degrees. Season bird inside and out with all seasonings.
  • Drink half an Oskar Blues beer. Put the other half in the can holder.
  • Stick chicken on the can/can holder.
  • Cook the bird on top of the can for about an hour and a half or until bird reaches 180 degrees. Stick meat thermometer thru the breast to the middle of thigh to insure proper temp.
  • Keep the direct flame off bird throughout cooking.
  • Serve with homemade coleslaw or potato salad and corn on the cob.

Atwater brewery Teams Up With McClures Specialty Foods For Craft Michelada

imageWe brought you a peek back in May, and now this from Atwater:

Detroit’s own Atwater Brewery and McClure’s Specialty Foods are set to release the world’s first craft Michelada on June 19th–a German style lager with bloody mary seasonings.

The partnership marks the first collaboration between the two growing Detroit brands. “I had been wanting to get together with McClure’s for years, and them with me, but we could never decide how to do it. It had to be big,” said Mark Rieth, President of Atwater. “It was only when we put two of our best selling products together, our German Lager and McClure’s Bloody Mary spices, that we knew we absolutely had to do it–and we’re fired up about it.”

The new Michelada combines Atwater German-style lager with McClure’s Bloody Mary spices. The combination of the two makes for a slightly sweet, semi-salty, tangy concoction with just the right amount of heat. The Michelada is canned at the Brew Detroit plant in Corktown and will be distributed in four-packs of 16-ounce cans via Meijer and Busch’s stores as well as other local retailers. Although there are other Michelada’s on the market from major brands, Atwater and McClure’s suggest this new brew is the “world’s first craft Michelada.”

“The Michelada is shaping up to be a hit for the both of us, and for our city in general. Everybody is thrilled with the product,” says McClure’s Co-Owner Bob McClure. “The partnership is something that people have been asking for for a long time. And now that we’ve got one product out the door, I can’t see us not doing another.”

While the Michelada will be available for purchase around the country starting in late June-it will be making its official Detroit debut at the Atwater and McClure’s Michelada Wrestle ‘Lotta launch party at Cheli’s June 25th starting at 4pm. And everybody’s invited. Attendees can expect a full serving of music, giveaways, and Mexican wrestling inspired by the clash of cultures and flavors that went into making the beer. Its Mexico-meets-Detroit-meets-Germany motif can also be seen on the can’s luchador themed artwork.

Bent Paddle Brewing Co. Explains Growler Sales Delay

Breweries in Duluth have been able to sell 64-ounce growlers to customers on Sundays for a few weeks now, but one brewery hasn’t joined in on the action just yet.

The City of Duluth required the production brewery to file an extension on its permit to allow those Sunday sales.

Reps from the brewery will await approval from the Duluth City Council, and are hoping to have Sunday sales by the end of July.

Will Lawmakers Bump Samuel Adams From “Craft?”

However, on June 11, Sen. Ron Wyden, a Democrat from Oregon, introduced the Craft Beverage Modernization and Tax Reform Act (S. 1562) that would not only cut excise taxes imposed on brewers, but would finally settle who’s a craft brewer and who isn’t. The text of that bill hasn’t been released yet, but the folks at the Beer Institute, a Washington, D.C.-based beer industry lobbying group, spelled out three of its key effects.

1. It reduces the federal beer excise tax to $3.50 per barrel on the first 60,000 barrels produced by domestic brewers producing fewer than 2 million barrels annually.

2. It cuts that same tax to $16 per barrel on the first 6 million barrels for all other brewers and all beer importers.

3. It maintains the current $18-per-barrel excise tax for any barrels beyond 6 million.

How does this clarify anything, you ask? Simple. Just by the numbers, the folks getting the deepest discounts are those producing 60,000 barrels or fewer a year. Those are your small craft brewers, and they are legion. In Washington state, for example, there were 256 breweries in operation in 2014, second only to the 431 in California. Of those breweries, only one — Redhook in Woodinville, Wash. — topped 60,000 barrels. While Redhook pushed out nearly 150,000 barrels in 2013, second-place Georgetown Brewing in Seattle produced only 52,000. In a corner of the industry in which the smaller players regularly have to compete with larger craft brewers for resources and shelf space, defining “small” is no minor task.

In the craft beer world, that leaves just a few players on the outside looking in. Boston Beer Co. produced 4.1 million barrels of Samuel Adams, Angry Orchard cider, Twisted Tea, Travelers Shandy and other beverages, but crossed the 2 million barrel threshold on beer alone more than five years ago. Yuengling, meanwhile, makes more than 2.7 million barrels of beer and would also be excluded. The third brewer in that gray area — North American Breweries and its Magic Hat, Portland, Pyramid and Genesee — was out of BA’s craft club for importing Labatt’s from Canada, but produced nearly 2.6 million barrels of its own as recently as 2013.

Lucid Brewing Acquires American Sky Brewing

Lucid Brewing of Minnetonka, MN announced today that it has acquired American Sky Brewing of Hudson, WI. The friendly agreement was reached over many rounds of beer and offers growth opportunities for both companies. The combined companies will operate under Lucid Brewing, LLC. but will maintain separate brand identities.

Under Lucid’s management, American Sky will continue to operate its popular Hudson tap room, The Hangar and distribute throughout Western WI. Draft and bottle production is expected to move to Lucid’s Minnetonka facility before the end of summer.

“Having Lucid on board represents a positive growth for the American Sky brand,” says Kati Schenz, General Manager of American Sky. “The Lucid team brings a different set of skills to the table. They have experience with larger scale production and a wider distribution network which is exciting for growing American Sky”.

“We are really excited about the American Sky team and taproom,” says Lucid co-owner Jon Messier. “Since we began in 2011, our focus has been on production and distribution. We are one of a handful of breweries without a taproom, and running one is not in our wheelhouse. The American Sky team is talented and we are excited to work together to improve the customer experience at The Hangar.”

Saint Arnold Announces National French Fry Day 7/13

Saint Arnold Executive Chef Ryan Savoie prepares more than 18 tons of hand cut frites each year. His painstaking process involves cutting half-pound russet potatoes (about one serving per potato), washing them several times in room temperature water, blanching at 250 degrees until golden brown, then completely cooling and drying each fry before a final cook at 360 degrees when ready to serve. After a shake of salt and pepper, the result is the best french fry in Houston. It is perfectly crunchy, doesn't need an accompaniment and remains enjoyable even as it cools.

"People may think it's strange, but I really enjoy cutting and washing the potatoes," said Savoie. "It's the first thing I do every day and one of the last things I do – it's relaxing and cathartic. The common mistake people make is thinking that a soggy fry results from under-cooking. It is almost always the result of under-washing. Starch cooks faster than the potato itself, so washing the starch off will let the potato cook properly, which promotes crunch."

For National French Fry Day, Savoie plans a world-class spread of accompaniments, including chili, spicy cheese curds, guacamole, bacon bits, Million Island dressing, jalapenos, Santo Queso, garlic aioli and, of course, ketchup. New Belgium - The Bike That Beer Built

Like Outside Magazine, we have an affinity for the outdoors...and apparently swing bikes. This week, the publication posted a story about one of the awesome people we're spotlighting in our summer Zagging campaign, Jimmy Kuehnle (if you have a moment, check out the other awesome people we're teaming up with). Jimmy Kuehnle's a Cleveland-based artist known for things like inflatable art, bike projects, and other rad things, and what you see above is a picture of the swing bike we commissioned that includes space for grills, coolers, umbrellas and, of course, people. It's pretty much the ultimate party bike.

Standing Stone Brewing Co. Welcomes New General Manager

Ashland, OR – Visitors to Standing Stone Brewing Company in Ashland may have noticed a new face among the staff in the last few weeks. The local brewpub recently welcomed Scott Allen as the new general manager, a longtime Ashland resident and business owner with a multitude of hospitality experience and familiarity with Southern Oregon.

Allen joined the brewery in April after operating Allenorth Property Management in Ashland for eight years alongside his wife, Gina Allen. Citing admiration for Standing Stone’s mission of environmental stewardship, community involvement, and healthy lifestyle choices, Allen says the organization embodies many of the principles he, too, holds dear.

“When the opportunity to join Standing Stone presented itself, I felt honored,” says Allen. “I’ve always thought of Ashland as a magic place, and Standing Stone has continually felt like a key local business truly practicing the ideals of our town.”

Allen brings with him 14 years of experience with McMenamins Pubs & Breweries in the Portland area. His time with the Oregon City Pub, Rock Creek Tavern, and the Kennedy School Property has given him a measure of insight into “public house” environment, which he very much enjoys, Allen says.

Standing Stone’s established environmental sustainability standards have earned the brewery longtime local and regional recognition, including a recent listing as the #5 Best Green Company in Oregon by Oregon Business Magazine. Allen assures that customers can expect the same drive for producing great products with sustainable practices in mind at the brewpub.

MillerCoors Launching “We Stand For Beer” Campaign

The print and out-of-home campaign, on which MillerCoors will spend just under $1 million spread out over a four-month period beginning in early July, was developed by the Milwaukee office of ad agency Jacobson Rost, which has worked on MillerCoors beer ads in years past.

The new corporate campaign, however, isn't designed to focus on particular MillerCoors brews such as Coors Light or Miller Lite. Rather, the campaign is designed to spotlight three core aspects of MillerCoors' corporate mission — job creation, sustainability and product quality.

Sierra Nevada Brews Oktoberfest with 600-Year-Old German Brewery

Chico, CA— June 29, 2015—On a trip to Germany this spring, Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. finalized its inaugural partner, Augsburg’s Brauhaus Riegele, for a brand new Oktoberfest beer. Released each fall starting in 2015, the collaborative seasonal will feature a different German brewery every year. The partnership blends centuries of brewing tradition with modern spirit, giving craft drinkers the ultimate Oktoberfest, a Bavarian festival beer unlike any they’ve experienced in the US.

Family owned like Sierra Nevada, Brauhaus Riegele has brewed excellent craft beers since 1386, and more than 600 years later, its innovation earns accolades including 2015 Craft Brewer of the Year at the Meininger International Craft Beer Awards. Just as Sierra Nevada’s Ken and Brian Grossman lead as a father-son team, Brauhaus Riegele has a father-son duo at the helm. Its 27th generation Master Brewer Dr. Sebastian Priller-Riegele works alongside his son Sebastian Priller-Riegele, a World Champion Beer Sommelier, to brew a lineup of beers that together have earned more than 200 awards and medals stateside and abroad. Their brewmaster, Frank Muller, has won the German Government’s “Bundesehrenpreis” award for quality seven times—every year it’s been given.  

“We’re honored that Brauhaus Riegele, a real cornerstone of German craft brewing, is kicking off this Oktoberfest collaboration with us,” said Ken Grossman, Sierra Nevada’s founder. “We’re both family owned, our children are hands on, and we share a passion for great beer. We’re aligned in so many ways, and we’re excited about the outstanding beer that’s emerged.” 

“For years we’ve followed the great development of Sierra Nevada and we are really impressed by Ken and Brian’s fantastic beer culture,” said Sebastian Priller-Riegele, Brauhaus Riegele’s marketing manager. “We are really looking forward to sharing this outstanding beer together that shows our passion and dedication to the art of brewing. The Sierra Nevada and Brauhaus Riegele collaboration Oktoberfest will hit retail shelves in August. It will only be distributed in North America, although Brauhaus Riegele fans in Germany need not worry. The two breweries are collaborating on a separate barrel-aged beer to be brewed and aged on site at Brauhaus Riegele’s traditional Bavarian sudhaus.

Oskar Blues - New IPA Coming To 12oz Cans

Here’s an interesting new can coming from our pal Dale Katechis at Oskar Blues.  This beer will simply be named IPA and yes it is an India Pale Ale.  This new brew will be packaged in 12oz cans and the beer will hit 6.43%-AbV.

Details from Oskar Blues:

The brew team has created another balanced but dynamic Oskar Blues beer, offering an intense fresh orange aroma, punchy, savory mouthfeel, and long-lasting flavor. A variety of Australian hops, including Enigma, Vic Secret, Ella, and Topaz, grown in Victoria and Tasmania, were hand-chosen by Oskar Blues brewers for this ale. This is one of the first U.S. production beers to use the new Enigma hop, a descendant of the Swiss Tettnang hop. Enigma imparts a true down-under terroir of white wine and red berries. Oskar Blues IPA’s grain bill features flaked red wheat and premium English Caramalt–giving the beer a sticky stoned-fruit flavor punctured by a bitter earthiness.

“The Australian hops impart very juicy and sweet aromas, featuring notes of passion fruit, red currant, pinot gris, raspberries, pineapple, peach and citrus,” says Tim Matthews, head of brewing operations for Oskar Blues. “A solid mix of malt barley and red wheat creates a clean malt backbone with just enough flavor and mouthfeel to support the main act from the hops.”

Tim’s tasting notes:
Aroma- white peach, pineapple, red berries, melon, spruce, citrus,
Flavor- crisp malts, melon, pinot gris, hint of bread.
Mouthfeel- coats with noticeable bitterness, finishes semi-sweet with soft bitterness.
Appearance- frothy to creamy foam, golden to orangish hue.

Look for this new year-round addition to the Oskar Blues beer line-up in 6-packs of 12-ounce CANs and on draft wherever great craft beer is sold starting in August.
