Pelican - Dry Fly Tsunami

31 January 2014

image
From Pelican Brewing:

Pelican Brewing Co. will be releasing the first of their Barrel-Aged beer series...Dry Fly Tsunami.  Unbelievably rich and delicious, Dry Fly Tsunami is a magical elixir created by the combination of Pelican's award-winning Tsunami Stout and barrels from Dry Fly Distilling that once matured their Washington Wheat Whiskey.

Check out this review on Dry Fly Distillery's Washington Wheat Whiskey:

"On the palate, neat, this whiskey was very soft, almost like a baby's blanket caressing my tongue, with freshly baked orange scones, cinnamon toast, white pepper and peppermint notes."

- Lance Mayhew, Oregon Culinary Institute

The dark roasted aroma of Tsunami stout is not lost in this pairing, only accentuated and balanced with notes of vanilla, oak, cinnamon and orange. The wheat whiskey kisses your taste buds while providing just the right amount of warmth. This full bodied beer offers a slightly dry espresso-like finish.

So come and have a pint with us when we release this beautiful beer.  Whitney Burnside, Head Brewer at Pelican Pacific City, will speak about the making of this special beer and will pass around samples on Saturday February 8th at 4pm at the Brewpub in Pacific City and again at 5pm at the Tillamook Tap Room.

A special "shot & a pint" combo, including a pint of Dry Fly Tsunami as a pairing alongside a shot of Dry Fly Distilling's Washington Wheat Whiskey will be available in Pacific City for as long as this special barrel-aged product lasts.... so head on out to Pacific City on February 8th and savor the flavors together!

Allagash Saison Coming Year-Round To 4-Packs

image
From Allagash:

Welcome to the family! Our newest beer to become a year-round will be our Saison. Coming in March this beer will also be available in 4 packs.

Allagash Saison is our interpretation of a classic Belgian farmhouse style. It is a golden hued beer, brewed with a 2-Row blend, malted rye, oats and dark Belgian candi sugar. It was hopped with Tettnang, Bravo and Cascade hops. Fermented with a traditional saison yeast strain, this beer exhibits notes of spice and tropical fruit in the aroma. Citrus and a peppery spice dominate the flavor and make way for a pleasant malt character.
Saison is full bodied with a remarkably dry finish. 6.1% ABV.

Flying Dog - Barrel-Aged Gonzo 2014 Release Details

image
From Flying Dog:

You took the day off from work and are prepared to abandon any pets, children, and/or dependent significant others to get your hands on a bottle of Barrel-Aged Gonzo Imperial Porter at our exclusive Barrel-Aged Gonzo Imperial Porter release this Monday.

How much does each bottle cost?

750-ml bottles of Barrel-Aged Gonzo Imperial Porter cost $20 each. We accept cash and credit cards. We do not accept personal checks unless the comic strip Cathy is printed in the background.

I want to be the first in line. How early can I arrive?

You can get in line as early as 9 am. By doing so, you waive Flying Dog Brewery of any responsibility for frostbite, loss of circulation to key limbs, loss of battery life on phone, and overall cold-weather bitterness. We will not let anyone in the building until the clock strikes noon, so come prepared.

Can I call ahead and reserve bottles?

No. You can only purchase bottles on-site from noon to 8 pm, even if you try to sweet talk us.

Can I call during the sale hours, buy the beer, and have it shipped to me?

Again, no. It’s illegal in Maryland for a brewery to ship beer directly to consumers. It’s also illegal in Maryland to grow thistles in your yard, throw bales of hay out of second-story windows, and give or receive oral sex.

Can I buy more than two bottles during my visit?

Nope. There will be a strictly-enforced two bottle per person limit. If you want more than two, bribe and bring your friends to buy for you. (But if you need to bribe your friends to come to a brewery, you may have some issues to sort out before you start worrying about buying more than two bottles of beer.)

Once I buy my beer, what can I do?

While we cannot serve beer by the glass quite yet, we are able to serve beer samples. Also, from noon to 8 pm, The Smoking Swine will be cooking up some damn fine BBQ and Signs Point East will jam out from 5 to 7 pm.

Are growler fills and other packaged beer to-go available during the release?

You bet your ass they are. However, by law, we can only sell a total of 288 oz. of beer to each person. We’ll let you do the math from there.

Will bottles of Barrel-Aged Gonzo be available at my local bottle shop after the release?

Nope. And while you’re in reading mode, you might want to check out what the word “exclusive” means.

Uinta Reveals New Detour Double IPA Packaging - Coming Early Feb

image
We brought you a peek at this packaging back in Dec, and now the official word from Uinta:

First brewed and released in 2010 as a core brand in their Crooked Line of beers, Detour Double IPA escalated into a brand that no longer fit in with the limited release nature intended for Uinta’s Crooked Line.  And so, Uinta gave the brand a face lift, adapting its packaging to emerge the brand into their Classic Line of beers.

So what changed? In lieu of a 750ml cork and caged finished bottle, Detour will be bottled in Uinta’s proprietary 12oz Compass Bottle and adorned with new label artwork that adopts the outdoorsy, adventurous look and feel of Uinta’s Classic Line.  The Detour label depicts a Vintage International  Scout and Airstream Camper heading away from the ‘hustle and bustle’ towards the great outdoors; the type of ‘Detour’ that resonates with the Uinta team and consumers alike. Detour will be available in a 4 pack and is scheduled to hit shelves in early February.

As for the beer, Detour’s hop profile will be kicked up a few notches with the addition of a fifth hop, Citra, which boosts citrusy characteristics in the beer.  A scenic tour of hops, consumers can expect a bright and bold Double IPA.

New Belgium Releases Snapshot Wheat Year-Round

image
We brought you news of this beer…and now the official press release from New Belgium & High Country Beverage:

The wait is over! In November 2013, Fort Collins-based company, New Belgium Brewing, announced the upcoming launch of its newest year-round beer, Snapshot Wheat.  High Country Beverage started distribution of the anticipated new product throughout Colorado the week of January 27, 2014.

“This is the biggest brand launch for New Belgium that comes along with a new packaged look for their company, “ said Steve Nichols, President of High Country Beverage. “We’re happy to help them get their new product on the shelves for people to enjoy.”

Snapshot has the aromas of citrus hops, accompanied by the sweetness of coriander and grains of paradise.  Brewed with wheat and pale malt, Snapshot pours a hazy, lemon-yellow with bright-white lacing.  But the real enticement is the snap of tart. New Belgium’s affinity for sour beers led to the in-process blending of lactobacillus to pucker up Snapshot’s base–an extra step to acidify and beautify this beer.

Update 2 Feb 2014 from New Belgium:

Big news everybody! Snapshot Wheat has hit the shelves. I know we've been talking bits and pieces of this beer for awhile now, but I wanted to offer a full-blown breakdown.

First, the details: Snapshot is a year-round offering. Not a seasonal, or a one-off. This beer will be around for the long haul. Also, people have been asking "yo, Juicebox... don't tell me this beer is replacing Sunshine?!!!?!" And I am here to tell you that it is not. Sunshine, while seeing a slightly smaller distribution footprint than it used to, is still very much alive and well.

The label: It's totally great. On it is a hand-painted (thank you Leah Giberson) Kodak Instamatic 104 camera. We thought it relevant to Snapshot, and nostalgic, and awesome. We have been accumulating actual Kodak 104's since the beer label was painted. I thought it would be nice to take a picture of one. Here it is:

Still more: What's the beer like? What's the breakdown of all the liquid-related things? Let's go over it...

Raw materials and special processes: Pale malt and wheat make up the backbone. Cascade hops offer a touch of hoppy bitterness with some grapefruit notes. Snapshot is spiced with coriander and Grains of Paradise. The yeast is a hybrid ale, offering some fruity and spicy notes. We pitch Lactobacillus into a portion of the wort to sour it. That soured portion then makes it back into un-soured base wort, pre-boil, to get just the right amount of tart for the finished product. And then this blend is fermented into the wonder that is Snapshot Wheat. (Here is a really great piece that details this Snapshot specific souring technique from Jonathan Shikes of The Westword.)

Visual: Hazy, pale-straw in color, like a good, unfiltered wheat be should be. And a bright-white foam lofts atop. Here's a closer look:

Aroma: Fresh cut lemons, lightly floral, with subtle bready notes.

Taste: Snapshot starts sweet, then moves to a tangy tartness.

Mouthfeel: Initially rich and creamy, but that gives way to spritzy, and the finish carries a refreshing twang.

Body: Medium to light.

Overall: Dang howdy, I love this beer. It has a snap of tart that gives the drinker something to think about. Snapshot has a feeling of refreshment that is out of this world. And the beer is super (like, SUPER) sessionable. Out of 10, I give it a 12.3...

In closing: Snapshot is available in bottles, cans, and draft. And you should be able find it all over the place. Please give it a try, and tell us what you think.

On that note: Take it easy and I'll see you soon...

Airways Brewing Announces 2014 Expansion Plans In Downtown Kent, WA

image
From Airways Brewing:

KENT, Wash. (January 31, 2014) – Airways Brewing Company today announced expansion and remodel plans for their Beer & Bistro, located in downtown Kent. This second location for Airways Brewing opened on November 1, 2011, and continues to draw craft beer lovers from around the country to the downtown area, earning the Best Economic Engine award from the Kent Downtown Partnership in 2013.

“The Bistro was something different for us and we didn’t know quite know what to expect,” said Alex Dittmar, founder and head brewer at Airways Brewing Company. “We took our already strong brand and built a solid reputation for quality. Thanks to our fantastic customers, we’ve decided to grow in downtown Kent and I think people are going to love what we have planned.”

The expanded restaurant will bring seating capacity from 35 to 150 seats. The additional space will include a family friendly seating area, while the current space will be remodeled and remain 21+.

A 3,000 square foot patio will be transformed into a gated garden space for outdoor music and entertainment, and year-round use thanks to fire pit tables and retractable awnings. A dilapidated kiosk out front will be stripped and rebuilt to house a grill and smoker as well as potential bar seating.

“We’re very excited about what these changes mean for our company, and the team that has helped build it,” said co-owner Dione Dittmar. “We also feel that our expansion fits in well with the City of Kent’s long-term plans for the area, as well as demand from Kent residents for more restaurants and retail in the heart of downtown.”

Construction is planned in two phases, starting in the next few weeks to make sure the outdoor area is ready for summer. The indoor construction is planned to start this summer.

Airways Brewing Company is working with Raven Commercial Real Estate as the developer of this property. Raven Commercial Real Estate is a full service commercial real estate firm focused on opportunities in the Pacific Northwest.

Half Acre - Gin Barrel Aged Pony Pilsner Coming Today

image
From Half Acre:

If you've been to our brewery you know that we're not swimming in space.  We've done our best to maximize the space we have and make the best beer possible.  One thing that we haven't been able to celebrate is the process of working with barrels.  Barrel work, when done well, takes real consideration and commitment.

In order to fit barrel work into our facility, we've begun working with smaller barrels from Corsair Distillery.  For this beer, we make use of Corsair’s unique gin barrels.  Typically barrels aren't used to make gin, but they create a specific gin that is aged in their used spiced rum barrels.  We have selected these barrels to finish Pony Pilsner.  The result is a beer that maintains its clean pilsner base, but stacks on refreshing flavors of botanicals, spice, and oak.

We'll begin to sell this barrel worked pilsner today.

Details

  • Release Date: Friday 1/31
  • 64 oz Growler $20
  • 32 oz Growler $11
  • 16 oz Draft $6

Saint Arnold Offers Souper Suggestions For The Big Game

image
From Saint Arnold:

HOUSTON, January 31, 2014 – Just in time for the Big Game this weekend, Saint Arnold Brewing Company (www.saintarnold.com), today released the winning recipes from the 7th Annual One Pot Showdown™. The oldest craft brewery in Texas hosted the unique onsite cooking contest last weekend, in which 79 cooking teams whipped up a wide variety of dishes – each of which had to be cooked onsite (no desserts or deep frying allowed) and incorporate at least one Saint Arnold beer as an ingredient.

A team of 24 judges evaluated entries on overall taste, use and distinction of the Saint Arnold beer in the recipe, and creativity. The One Pot Trophy was awarded to One Pot Potnas for their creation, "Winter Guajillo Pork Soup," featuring Saint Arnold Winter Stout. Team Green Bayou took second place with, "Gumbo des Herbes with Saint Arnold Brown Ale and Lagniappe." Rounding out the top three was 4 Guys, 1 Pot for, "Carne Gui-Stout-A," made with Saint Arnold Winter Stout.

Download the recipes at
http://www.saintarnold.com/onepot/.

"Beer can be a great ingredient in cooking in addition to being a wonderful beverage to pair with food," said Saint Arnold Founder and Brewer Brock Wagner. "The creativity we saw from the cooking teams went a long way beyond adding some beer to a chili recipe – although that works well too. We hope making these recipes available will encourage craft beer lovers to try them for their Super Sunday parties."

This year's event featured 60 percent more teams and over 1,000 people circulating among the booths trying the various takes on chili, curry and soup. Over $5,000 was raised for Kids' Meals (
http://www.kidsmealshouston.org/), a local organization that delivers nutritious meals to children in need.

For those who don't want to spend the day of the Big Game in the kitchen, Saint Arnold will welcome Wayne Mueller of Legendary Texas barbecue joint Louie Mueller Barbecue for the first ever BBQ Block Party at Saint Arnold. The event, presented in collaboration with the Houston Barbecue Festival, will kick off at 11 a.m. Sunday, February 2nd and will wrap up at 2 p.m. Mueller, a 3rd generation owner and pitmaster, will make the drive from Taylor, Texas with his mobile barbecue rig filled with brisket, links and beef ribs to serve barbecue for the first time in Houston.

Diamond Knot Opens New Brewpub

image
From Diamond Knot:

After a year of construction, Diamond Knot Craft Brewing is preparing to celebrate the grand opening of its newest location – the Brewpub @ MLT.

It’s not every day the blessings of Neptune and Poseidon are conjured, but Mountlake Terrace’s only brewpub, the Brewpub @ MLT, will host its full ship’s christening ceremony at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 8.

“We know most people expect a ribbon cutting for grand opening celebrations,” said Sherry Jennings, Diamond Knot’s chief storyteller. “Diamond Knot’s story is rooted in Pacific Northwest nautical history, so there’s no better way to welcome a new DK location than to christen ‘the ship.’”

Based in Mukilteo, Diamond Knot Craft Brewing has been awaiting this moment for more than a year. Tearing an 8,700-square-foot retail location down to its studs and rebuilding it into an exciting brewery experience has been a huge endeavor. Adjacent to Double DD Meats, a successful 59-year-old destination meat market, the Brewpub @ MLT includes a production brewery visible throughout the restaurant, full bar, private dining in the Quarterdeck and outdoor seating in the warmer months.

“Part of the Diamond Knot mission is to provide a lively experience,” said company president and founder Bob Maphet. “This location has already proven to be pretty lively thanks to the anticipation of our opening. It’s really about the Diamond Knot experience. Visitors to the Brewpub will not only be able to drink our craft beer, they can watch it being made.”

The 10-barrel brewing system is in full view behind a wall of glass. The beer is brewed and fermented, then sent to serving tanks in the large walk-in cooler and piped directly to the taps. There are 16 taps; 14 beers, one cider and DK root beer. Eventually there will be guest taps when monthly Washington Beer Nights welcome in brewers from around the state.

Another addition to the location is the shipwreck timber bar top, once a timber onboard a steam freighter that ran aground off the Washington coast in 1921. Underwater for more than 80 years, the timbers floated to shore and were reclaimed by a local timber company. Slabs were cut specifically for the Brewpub @ MLT bar and coated in many layers of resin.

“We like to tell stories and this bar top has definitely become a fun story to tell,” Jennings said. “You can still see sand in the grain and markings where steel chains once held the timbers to the deck.”

The Brewpub menu includes signature burgers and pizzas, salads, chowder and specialty dishes. Breakfast is served on the weekends and is a mix of omelets, waffles, pancakes and signature DK combinations. Monthly chef specials, appetizers and desserts round out the offerings.

Diamond Knot Craft Brewing also operates the Brewery & Alehouse on the Mukilteo waterfront, Camano Lodge on Camano Island and the Taproom, located at the company’s production brewery and headquarters on Chennault Beach Road in Mukilteo. Diamond Knot Craft Brewing has been in operation since 1994.

The hours for the Brewpub @ MLT, located at 5602 232nd St. #106, Mountlake Terrace, are 10 a.m. to midnight weekdays and 8 a.m. to midnight weekends.

Shorts ControversiALE Returns Returns To Bottles Today

image
From Short’s:

As a tribute to Simcoe hops, this beer’s unique hop aroma, flavor, and overall intensity has been known to get people talking. ControversiALE is hopped like an IPA and drinks like a Pale Ale. With these characteristics, there is no disputing its well deserved popularity! The fans have voiced their opinions and the verdict is in; ControversiALE is back in bottles and will be distributed across Michigan beginning today (1/31) through the end of April!

ControversiALE (6% ABV, 65 IBU) has a earthy, citrus and pine-laced aroma. A large amount of toasted grains and high alpha hops form a perfect union that creates the sensation of toasted sourdough covered with grapefruit hop marmalade. The light, refreshing qualities of this beer make it the perfect beer for the welcoming of spring.

Introducing Intangible Ales - A New Project From Terry Hawbaker & Kristen Mullen

30 January 2014

image
I’m real excited to bring you the news of Intangible Ales….and I’m even more excited to let you know that this new venture was created by our friends Terry Hawbaker & Kristen Mullen.

Intangible Ales is a new project created to brew eclectic, rustic and wild beers combining Terry’s passion for brewing and Kristen’s passion for photography (Watch for Kristen’s cool label art!)  While Terry continues to brew at Pizza Boy, Terry & Kristen will be sharing space with Pizza Boy to brew and bottle most of their beers.  Most releases will be in bottles, however there will be some occasional draft as well.

The first beer was brewed as a collaboration with Bob Sylvester at Saint Somewhere Brewing Company in Florida, on December 27, 2013. The beer is a Belgian-style saison brewed with kumquats and peppercorns with a hint of sage and ginger. This beer will be bottled and it is going to have the same look as the regular Saint Somewhere bottles, but with the Intangible Ales logo and artwork added. The Beer will be named Soleil Rêverie and it should be out sometime mid-February to early March in bottles and potentially kegs. Saint Somewhere recently debuted the beer at the Jupiter Craft Brewers Festival in Jupiter, FL and it will also be featured at Cigar City Brewing’s 5th annual Hunahpu’s Day release party on March 8th!

In case you’re worried…this beer will likely also have an NEPA premier so stay tuned.

You can find Intangible Ales on Facebook as well as Twitter (@intangibleales) and Twitter (intabgibleales).
