Mephistopheles' Stout Returns!

Friday, December 13th at 5pm

Mephistopheles is the crafty shapeshifter, the second fallen angel; he who does not love light. Herein he patiently lies, waiting and willing to do your bidding, but for a price. Enter into his darkness, a tangled and intricate labyrinth of bittersweet rapture.

Gather your friends and come share taster flights and bottles of this vintage demon. His 2013 incarnation will be available on draft and in bottles to take home with you, to share with friends over the holidays or to hoard in your cellar.

The name Mephistopheles originally appeared in literature as the demon in the German Faust legend. Pronounced me-fə-ˈstä-fə-ˌlēz, it's a tongue-twister for sure, but not as much as friggatriskaidekaphobia, which is the fear of Friday the 13th.

The more you know!

Tap Room Rarities

5pm Friday Special Tappings Nutty Professor

, our robust Russian-style Imperial Stout infused with peanuts, is on tap right now! And our brewers are at it again...experimenting, tinkering, and surprising us with their creative concoctions!

Coming soon...

Chocolate malt gives our Coconut Brown Ale a brown sugar maltiness, and 2.5 lbs of lovingly toasted coconut flakes per keg give this brew the perfect dose of tropical vacation.

The Maharaja Imperial IPA

available in mid-December

Maharaja is derived from the sanskrit words mahat, meaning "great", and rajan, meaning "king". Much like its namesake, this imperial IPA is regal, intense and mighty. With hops and malts as his servants, he rules both with a heavy hand. The Maharaja flaunts his authority over a deranged amount of hops: tangy, vibrant and pungent along with an insane amount of malted barley - fashioning a dark amber hue and exquisite malt essence.

Welcome to his kingdom!

New World Porter

available in January

Our brewers are busy brewing our New World Porter! Adam Avery has always been a lover of hoppy beers, and in 1997 he dreamed of a robust ale with a massive amount of black specialty malt...dry-hopped!

Since then, we have sailed through the late winter and into early spring with the help of this dark porter that has been dry-hopped for the long voyage from bottle to palate. These days, they call it a "black IPA", but back then it was a New World!

Coming soon in the new year!

This 10 Dec 2013 update from
Avery:

Mephistopheles’ Stout is back just in time for Christmas and though it is as black as a lump of coal, you’ll be merrier and more red-faced than old Saint Nick himself if you get a bottle of this 15.4% ABV monster in your stocking.

The first shipments of this year’s Mephistopheles, Batch No. 9, are leaving the Avery Brewing Company this week and should hit shelves and taps at select locations around the country by Friday (yeah Friday the 13th).

First brewed in 2005, Mephistopheles was the third installment of the Demons of Ale series. After creating The Beast Grand Cru and Samael’s Oak-Aged Ale, Adam Avery decided he wanted the third demon to be a massive stout unlike any other. One of the most distinguishing ingredients is the beer’s Westmalle Belgian yeast strain, which produces layers of esters and phenols that create much of the beer’s complex flavor. The grist bill is focused mainly on roasted and black malts making it dark and rich. There is also a small amount of Special B, a specialty malt, added for a touch of raisin-like sweetness. The result is a massive and complex stout with notes of vine-ripened grapes, anise, bitter chocolate and an espresso-like finish.

“For me this is one of the most diverse dessert beers out there,” said Adam Avery, the brewery’s president, CEO and brewmaster.  “It can pair with almost any dessert. It’s perfect for the holidays- a time when we eat tons of food with rich, decadent, and excessive flavors and need a beer that can match up.”

The name Mephistopheles originally appeared in literature as the demon in the German

Faust legend. According to the story, Faust was dissatisfied with his life and made a deal with the devil, exchanging his soul for unlimited knowledge and worldly pleasures. Mephistopheles appears in this legend as a plain-clothed devil, mirroring the massive brew hiding within the 12oz bottle.

A release party for Mephistopheles will be held at the Avery Brewing Company Tap Room in Boulder on Friday, Dec. 13 at 5pm. The party will feature vintages dating back to 2005 available on tap and in bottles. For more information, beer connoisseurs can check www.averybrewing.com or email info@averybrewing.com.
