Odell - The Meddler Oud Bruin Ale Coming 9/8

Great news from Odell:

Fort Collins, CO/mbb/. – On September 8, 2012, Odell Brewing will celebrate the release of The Meddler, a barrel aged Oud Bruin Ale and the brewery’s fifth Single Serve release this year.

Inspired by a resurrected style from the Flemish region of Belgium, The Meddler Oud Bruin is a blend of several generations of brown ales that were barrel aged for over 18 months. Wild yeasts, Lactobacillus, and Brettanomyces meddle with the beer creating complexity and depth of flavor. Intricate, yet balanced, The Meddler has an 8.9% ABV.

“At first sniff you get a caramel crystal malt aroma with hints of tartness,” said Brent Cordle, the brewery’s barrel aging manager. “A creamy tan head appears after the pour giving way to flavors of brown sugar, oak and vanilla paired with sour black cherry and a crisp dry finish.”

The Meddler is offered in cork and cage finished 750 ml bottles and will be available throughout the brewery’s ten state distribution footprint. Odell Brewing will celebrate the release of the beer with live music, beer samples, and local food in the brewery’s Tap Room on September 8th from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m.

It’s always interesting to hear from a brewmaster, and it’s always a lot of fun talking beer with the man who creates it, but we had even more fun today with our brewery choice because their beers are brand spanking NEW in Northeastern PA.



Today we featured Goose Island Brewery, and for those following along, you’ll note that only a month or so ago Goose Island entered the Pennsylvania market.  For many years I hurriedly sampled Goose Island beers as I ran from one terminal to another at Chicago’s O’Hare Airport….they always had great beers and I can remember wondering why I didn’t see them in PA.

Jump ahead to a year or so ago and Goose Island was purchased by Anheuser-Busch bumping their distribution and production up considerably.  In fact Goose Island just announced that by Nov 2012 they will distribute in all 50 states.  Some may think this is not good news for Goose Island beer, but I would disagree…their beer is better than ever and now more available than ever before.

Today we chose an interesting beer from Goose Island called Pepe Nero.  This is an interesting mix of a Belgian Farmhouse beer that uses black peppercorns in the brew.  Pepe Nero is an interesting combination of sweet and savory flavors with notes of nutty flavor and an earthy peppery finish.  The addition of black peppercorns accentuates the typical Farmhouse Ale peppery feel and finish and makes for a really tasty beer.  If you stop to savor the flavor for a moment, be sure to check out the dark mahogany color of this beer too…it simply looks and tastes wonderful.



Today we were lucky enough to talk to Goose Island Brewmaster Brett Porter.  Brett not only has a last name perfect for a brewer, but even a first name that is perfect for a brewer…and hopefully we will see him create a Brett-Yeast Porter someday.  It was really fun talking about Pepe Nero and the recent expansion of the barrel program and distribution at Goose Island.  It was also fun talking flavors with Brett & even a bit of food pairing for Pepe Nero as well.  This is a beer and style I’d recommend everyone try for themselves and see if you like it as much as we did.


Not many people realize that Goose Island has one of the largest barrel collections in the U.S……so as a bonus, the guys at Goose Island were nice enough to send us a bottle of Goose Island Bourbon County Stout 2012 and it was wonderful!  At 15% ABV, Bourbon County is a big beer for sure, and it is loaded with chocolate, boozy bourbon flavor that I really enjoyed.  Try this one for yourself if and when it does hit PA.

Here’s a new collaboration brew between Stone Brewing, Iron Fist and home brewer extraordinaire Ken Schmidt.  This one is called Mint Chocolate Imperial Stout, it will be packaged in 12oz bottles and come in at 9.6% ABV.  Our pal Mitch Steele has an interesting one here and yes this recipe is Ken’s winning brew from the Stone March Madness Homebrew competition.  This beer is coming 10/8.

Study Says People Drink Beer Faster From Curved Glassware

Watch for more curved glassware showing up in craft beer bars….An interesting study from cbsnews:

(CBS News) If you really want to nurse your beer, you may want to ask for it in a straight glass instead of a curved one.

A new study shows that the shape of one's beer glass affects how fast people gulp down the beverage.

"People often talk of 'pacing themselves' when drinking alcohol as a means of controlling levels of drunkenness, and I think the important point to take from our research is that the ability to pace effectively may be compromised when drinking from certain types of glasses," Dr. Angela Attwood, a research assistant at the School of Experimental Psychology at the University of Bristol in Bristol, England, said in a press release.

The study appeared Aug. 17 in the journal PLoS ONE.

Researchers asked 159 social drinkers between the ages of 18 to 40 who did not have a history of alcoholism to drink a lager or a non-alcoholic soft drink from either a straight or curved glass.

On average, it took people drinking beer out of a straight glass 11 minutes to finish 12 oz. Those drinking out of the curved glass only took seven minutes. There was no difference in time for people consuming soft-drinks out of either glass.

Czech Hop Harvest Down 26% for 2012

It should be interesting to see how this plays out fro craft breweries, and especially for those that rely on Czech hops.  New out of Prague is that bad weather has destroyed 1/4th of their harvest.  Details form the Detroit Free Press:

The Hop Growers Union of the Czech Republic says preliminary figures show a yield of about 0.95 - 1.00 metric tons (1.05 - 1.10 tons) per hectare compared with the average of 1.11 metric tons (1.22 tons) per hectare. They cited freezing temperatures in February and a drought in spring. 

The country’s overall production is expected to fall by 26% to 4,500 metric tons from 6,088 metric tons in 2011.

New Holland - Charkoota Rye 2012 & Dragon’s Milk 12oz Bottles

Here’s the 2012 version of New Holland High Gravity Series Charkoota Rye Smoked Dopplebock Lager age din Brandy Barrels.  The 2011 version is here, and as you can see the ABV has increased to 9.35%.  We also have the new 12oz bottled version of New Holland Dragon’s Milk.  This is the same brew, but smaller 12oz bottle packaging…a trend we’ve seen from New Holland this week.

Brau Brothers Receives $250K Public Funding For Expansion

The Brau Brothers Brewing Company is based about 15 miles east in Lucan but needs more space. The council on Tuesday approved $250,000 in public funding to help the company move its brewing equipment into a Marshall building. Brau Brothers is also pursuing foundation, bank and private financing.

Thirsty Dog Brewing Expanding In Akron, OH

imageWe’re now constantly posting news of brewery expansions….this is good news for craft beer lovers.  Today it’s Akron, Ohio’s Thirsty Dog Brewing…details from Ohio.com:

Two giant stainless steel fermenters capable of holding 90 barrels each were delivered and installed Thursday at the Akron brewery. Another three are expected at the end of September.

The new equipment will allow the regional brewer to dramatically boost its capacity, expand its reach in New York state, and start distributing in West Virginia and Illinois. Thirsty Dog is now available in 13 states.

The 14-foot, conical fermenters were custom-made by Silver State Stainless of Nevada. Workers had to squeeze them into place — there was less than an inch of room available on each side in some areas as they were hauled through the brewery.

Oregon Brewers Will Create Over 100 Fresh Hop Beers in 2012

PORTLAND, Ore. (August 28, 2012/mbb/) – Fall is coming to the Pacific Northwest and that means the return of fresh hop beers and the Oregon Brewer’s Guild (OBG) fresh hop Fests. Four Fresh Hop Fests – similar to traditional outdoor beer festivals – are scheduled across the state in September and October as part of the Oregon Bounty culinary tourism program. Each Fresh Hop Fest will feature original limited release fresh hop beers produced by OBG members. Fresh hop beers are only produced during the small window of Oregon’s hop harvest, which typically takes place from mid-August to mid-September. These once-a-year beers are ready for consumption in September and October and are packed with unique flavors that simply aren’t available the rest of the year.

Oregon is home to 120 brewing companies, and nearly 100 fresh hop beers will be made during the hop harvest. “We are lucky to have so many breweries within minutes of the hop fields that supply the aroma and flavor hops to the US craft beer industry,” explains Brian Butenschoen, Executive Director of the Oregon Brewers Guild. “The goal of the Fresh Hop Fests is to gather these limited beers in one location for consumers to try and enjoy – in many regions, this is the only time for consumers to try so many fresh hop beers at the same time.”

Fresh hop beers are growing in popularity across the nation, but Oregon’s abundance of hop vineyards and status as the second largest hop-growing region in the United States gives the state a distinct advantage in fresh hop beer production. Fresh hops are extremely fragile and need to be dried or used within 24 hours, ideal for Oregon, where nearly 140 of the state’s breweries are within 150 miles of a hop field. Fresh hops are picked straight off the vine, then bypass the hop kiln and are shipped directly to the brewery to be immediately added to the brew kettle. “Oregon’s hop growing community is especially rare,” explains Nancy Frketich of the Oregon Hop Commission. “I can’t think of any other brewing community in the world where you have 100 specialty fresh hop beers made around a single harvest.”

Fresh Hop Fests will be held across the state between September 29th and October 20th, 2012. Fresh Hop Fests hours vary and can be found at http://oregonbeer.org/freshhopsfest/. Most events start at Noon and Souvenir tasting glasses are required to sample beers. Individual beer samples are $1 each. Food will also be available for purchase.

Caldera Brewing Expands Brewhouse, Restaurant, Tasting Room & Distillery

Exciting news and lots of expansion going on a Caldera Brewing.  Details from MailTribune:

Caldera Brewing Co. is putting the finishing touches on a new, expanded brew house and soon-to-be restaurant, tasting room and distillery.

By Oct. 1, the company plans to move all of its brewing equipment into the 28,000-square-foot building, which sits a few hundred yards up Clover Lane from its current brew house, and hopes to open a 134-seat restaurant and other amenities a month later, owner Jim Mills said.

Mills said he plans to branch out from beer into distilled spirits and nonalcoholic soda and tea once the company settles in at its new location. "I've been wanting to distill for a while now, we just don't have any room where we are at now," Mills said. "We'll distill scotch, vodka, bourbon, gin ... I brew this hibiscus and rose petal iced tea that's pretty good; we'll also make that." As for soda, Mills said, Caldera likely will start with ginger ale and root beer.

With 92 seats inside and 42 outside, the restaurant will be one of Ashland's largest, Mills said. And it could expand. "We're really going to step it up a notch from what we offer at the Tap House, but we're still going to keep it affordable," Mills said

Ale Industries Releasing A.I. Evolution 9/1--An Evolving Beer

imageAn interesting concept for a series of beers coming today from Ale Industries.  A.I. Evolution Generation 1 will be released on 9/1, but what’s really interesting here is that A.I. Evolution will really be the start of a series of beers based on the same basic recipe that is then blended with new complimentary beers.  Details from Ale Industries:

(Concord, CA, 31 Aug 2012/mbb/) – Ale Industries, a craft brewery in the East Bay will be releasing A.I. Evolution, this Saturday September 1st through our Tap Room. Evolution is a beer that we have been dreaming of for the last sixteen years. The concept is simple, create a beer that is constantly evolving through blending with new and complementary batches. As easy as the concept is, implementing this into a breweries schedule that is currently maxed out took the idea of getting creative to the next level.

We have really been ramping up our Barrels and Uniquities department here at A.I., and until Evolution it consisted of either 100% brett ferments or whiskey/bourbon barrel aged beers. We coincidentally also recently made the acquaintance of Jay Goodwin, of The Rare Barrel, a start up here in the Bay Area thats focus is on barrel aged sours. He had stopped by the brewery during an Orange Kush brew day, and we were telling him about our bottleneck issues. Our fermentation space has limited our production, and until we got that figured out we were stuck at around 1200 bbl/year. He pointed out that we had eight barrels sitting there empty, just asking to be filled with beer. We had them sitting there waiting to be put into rotation for our sour projects. Until Jay suggested it we had never even thought of using old wine barrels as fermentation space for “regular” beer.

That was when it all came together. We would use the barrels as the fermenter for Evolution. Quickly Evolution became cooler than we had thought possible. Not only was this going to be an ever changing beer, meandering down the pathway of the brewers imagination, but it was going to be barrel fermented to boot!

A.I. Evolution, Generation 1 is an English Strong Brown, 8% abv. We are really loving the subtle oak character that the barrels have given the beer. The color of this beer has come from English Brown malt, a very earthy and nutty malt. Victory and Special B malts give it a beautiful caramel flavor and depth. Nugget hops from the U.S. are used for bittering and Willamette is for flavor hops. Finish is malty and toasty.

West Flanders Brewing Opens in Boulder w/Former Oskar Blues Brewer

Boulder, CO (29 August 2012/mbb/) —West Flanders Brewing Company (WFBC) will open in the old BJ's Pizza location on the Pearl Street Mall on Monday, Sept. 24. The owners are restaurant veterans Mark and Chris Heinritz who have owned The Sink in Boulder since 1992, and were founders of the Redfish New Orleans Brewhouse, which was tremendously popular in Boulder in the mid-to-late 90s, and whose beer and food-centric menu was one of the first of its kind. Mark and Chris are joined by longtime restaurateur Barry Wolfman who will be the operating partner.

They are also joined by award-winning brewmaster Brian Lutz, previous brewmaster at Left Hand Brewing Company, Redfish and Oskar Blues. Lutz is known for his audacious beers with creative flavor profiles, and for being instrumental in helping Oskar Blues become the first craft brewery to can their beer (Dale's Pale Ale).

Stone - Building Oceanside Company Store Video

Boulder, Colorado – August 30 Aug 2012/mbb/ – Twisted Pine Brewing Company has embraced and utilized this year’s monthly Artisan Ale Project by crafting an array of bold beauties such as Canis Lupulus (an Imperial Black IPA), Sacred Spice Chai Porter, West Bound Braggot (silver medal winner at this year’s Colorado State Fair), Black Swan (a black saison), and Wagon Wheel Stout (aged on cherries over a year in bourbon barrels). September finds the brewers once again flexing their flexibility as they present the Big Sticke (pronounced “Schtick-uh”).

The style known as Sticke Altbier originated and is still brewed seasonally in small quantities in Düsseldorf. The story goes that Sticke (meaning “secret” in the regional German dialect) began as a brewer’s mistake batch, likely the result of extra malted grains accidentally finding their way into the mash. This fortuitously stronger version of the local Altbier was tasted and relished and soon gained the admiration of the townspeople. The ‘secret’ recipe passed in whispers through the ears of several neighboring brewers and a tradition was born. A few breweries from the region, such as Uerige and Schumacher, continue to release their Stickebiers biannually, once towards the end of Summer and again in the wintertime.

Twisted Pine’s homage to the seasonal style is colored somewhere between crimson and copper under an enticing almond head. Subdued sweetness with a dash of black pepper aroma drift from glass to nose, revealing the Vienna malt which comprises the majority of the recipe’s grain bill along with the Saaz hops steeped in the beer after fermentation. Big Sticke hits the tongue with a rush of smooth, malty goodness rounded off by crisp, savory notes provided by the German hops, Magnum and Perle. The flavor is balanced with finesse and despite weighing in at 7.1% ABV and 71 IBU, is extremely gentle on the palate.

The label for Big Sticke features a piece by local artist Jennifer Mosquera, entitled “Fall Acrylic on Wood Panel”. Jennifer’s artwork will be on display throughout the taproom during the release party, which runs from noon to 9pm on Saturday September 1st, and she will be on hand to personally sign bottles. The artwork will remain on the walls for the rest of the month and the beer, in 750ml bottles and on draft, will be available at Twisted Pine’s ale house while supplies last. Dead Reckoning Porter & Anthology #2 Release

Tröegs’ perennial fall   favorite, Dead Reckoning Porter, is currently available  throughout our eight-state distribution network.  Dead Reckoning is available in 12-ounce bottles and 1/2-barrel kegs.  It is also currently flowing in our Tasting Room at the brewery, or you can pick up bottles in our General  Store.??Weighing in at 5.8% ABV and 53 IBUs, Dead Reckoning is unfiltered and aggressively hopped for the style.  It utilized Pilsner, Caramel, Chocolate and Roasted malts along with Chinook and Vanguard hops.  You may also remember that Dead Reckoning took home a Silver medal at the 2009 Great American Beer Festival in Denver CO and captured the Bronze in 2008.

In conjunction with the release of Dead Reckoning, our  Anthology #2 sampler packages are also available.Anthology #2 features an assortment of Tröegs Pale Ale,  HopBack Amber, DreamWeaver Wheat and, of course, Dead  Reckoning.

Portsmouth & Smuttynose Updates: Mild Child, Scotch Ale, Short Batch Series & Towle Farms Update

As the Jones regime takes shape in the brewery, one of the first things to manifest is a buzz of activity. 

In addition to some new beers (which we'll talk about below), former bartender Matt Gallagher has joined the brew crew and a few equipment improvements have begun, not the least of which is a new, custom-built grain mill from Canada.  Our serving tanks are getting some much needed love and rehabilitation and a new hot-water-on-demand system means the guys have been able to do the first ever double brew day in the history of Portsmouth Brewery!  Now onto the beer...

Autumn has apparently become collaboration brew time.  Assistant Brewer Matt Tarpey brewed a single batch with his old co-workers at O'Connor Brewing in Norfolk, VA.  The American Mild, named Mild Child, (3.7% abv) is brewed with a tongue-numbing 2.5 pounds of hops per barrel.  Matt says O'Connor's Head Brewer Jimmy Walsh should be coming up to brew a batch in New Hampshire soon.

Hood River, Or – Full Sail Brewing is proud to announce the release of another beer in their Brewer’s Share Series – Big Daddy J’s Malt Liquor, developed by Assistant Brewing Supervisor, Jason Muñoz. In 2008 Full Sail Brewing created their small batch Brewer’s Share series as an opportunity for each of their individual brewers to express their creations to be shared on tap exclusively in their pub. Since their crew came up with so many great beers, they decided to share a selection of them with beer lovers everywhere. The beer will be released in 22oz. bottles and on draft in September.

“As an independent and employee owned brewery, you know that we put our hearts and souls into every drop. With Brewer’s Share we’re proud to showcase the people behind our award winning brews by introducing our individual brewers by name and beer,” said Irene Firmat, Full Sail’s CEO and Founder.
As a new dad and a graduate of Oregon State University’s Brewing Sciences program, Jason celebrates his inner college student and his new station in life with Big Daddy J. Big Daddy J is a malt liquor that is perfectly balanced so that it's clean and drinkable smoothness makes that 8% alcohol go down so easily. It’s golden in color and hopped with Hallertau Hersbrucker hops, IBU 28. BDJ redefines what malt liquor can be when brewed by a very talented craft brewer and new dad.

The inspiration for the name “Brewer’s Share” came from that mysterious portion that vanishes from a barrel during aging that brewers refer to as the “angel’s share,” and that led to “Brewer’s Share,” an equally mysterious offering that appears during inspiration. Brewer’s Share can also mean a unit of ownership, as in stock. Consider this program to be an Initial Pub Offering (IPO). Whenever you purchase a Brewer’s Share you get a unit of ownership – one share of the batch. As a shareholder you have the right to consume the beverage. In doing so you will also be investing in the public good – as each brewer not only chooses the recipe, they choose a local charity or organization that will benefit from each bottle sold – Which can bring an excellent return on ingestion (ROI).

With each Brewer’s Share series beer, Full Sail picks a local charity or organization to receive a portion of the proceeds from the sale of the beer. Jason has chosen to support
Helping Hands Against Violence who is dedicated to serving victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking by focusing attention on said issues through education and outreach.

Full Sail’s Brewer’s Share small batch offerings will be available in 22oz. bottles and on draft. The other beers in the 2012 line-up include Extra Special Barney (ESB), Phil’s Existential Alt and Chris’s Summer Delight. Full Sail will release one Brewer’s Share at a time and a new beer will be released for each season.

New Belgium - Shift Pale Lager Now in 12oz Cans

brought you the 16oz canned version of New Belgium Shift Pale Lager…and now today New Belgium has released the 12oz version and for some reason it’s actually a higher ABV of 5% over the original 4.5% againWe noted this in the updated 16oz can release so I suspect this is just a higher than expected yield from the original label.

Today we have the latest Rotator Series beer from Widmer Brothers called O’Ryely IPA.  This new brew will be packaged in 22oz bottles and come in at 6.4% ABV.  The original 12oz bottle label and keg label are here, so you can see this is a significant change in the Widmer Brother’s packaging.
