Shiner – Brewer’s Pride Prickly Pear

30 June 2012

image

Back in April I brought you an exciting new label from Shiner caller brewer’s Pride Prickly Pear…and I’m excited to report that thanks to my friend Jimmy Mauric, I was able to sample this new brew.    Shiner Prickly Pear is the 3rd release in the Brewer’s Pride Series, and yes I did get to sample the first two (Old Time Alt & Ryes & Shine.)  Prickly Pear has “summer brew” written all over it.  From the first aromatic “whiff” when you open he bottle, to your first sip, this is a great summer beer.  The nose is decidedly floral and fruity, and the taste does not disappoint.  Prickly Pear is well balanced, but it does lean slightly to the fruity/citrusy/sweet side, but in a really enjoyable way.  We sampled a few at different temps, and on a hot afternoon like today, I liked it best pretty cold.

The sweet citrus flavor of the prickly pear fruit is complemented by the Citra & US Goldings hops…and yes for those asking, this IS a lager and it does use Prickly Pear cactus juice..  On second and third sip I’m happy to report a clean and crisp tartness and a really drinkable mouthfeel.   I’m a big fan of Shiner’s Ruby Redbird and the family resemblance is in Prickly Pear for sure.  While I will admit I like Ruby Redbird a little better, Prickly Pear is up to the task, especially on a hot summer night like tonight….Cheers Jimmy…you have another winner in Prickly Pear!

Prickly Pear is part of the Family Reunion Variety Pack which will also include Kosmos Reserve, Black Lager, Bock, Blonde & Hefe….so check it out for yourself.

Denver Beer Co–“Clown Question” Proceeds Benefit Fallen Policewoman

imageIn case you missed it the original story from Bryce Harper’s “Clown Question” is here…and now some good news for the proceeds from the worlds fastest lager brew.  This from Yahoo:

The Washington Post reports that someone in Harper's camp recently called Charlie Berger, the brewery's co-owner, to talk profits from the beer Harper is not old enough to drink legally.

On Monday morning, after the Nationals had arrived in Denver, Harper learned from local news reports about the killing of Officer Celena Hollis, a veteran policewoman who was raising a 12-year-old daughter on her own. Harper had recommended Denver Beer Company donate a chunk of the proceeds to a memorial fund that will support Hollis's daughter.

"It's exciting to hear from Bryce," Berger said. "We were making this beer just for fun. We never thought it would pick up to this extent. First of all, we're definitely flattered. More important, the fact that he was making a lot of good come from it, it's valiant. It says something about Bryce."

Fire Wipes Out 300,000 Cans Of Beer In Quebec

29 June 2012

image
Sad news (sort of) from CBCNews:

Some northern New Brunswickers won't be able to buy tax-free beer this long weekend after an electrical fire burnt down a store in Quebec.

Many New Brunswickers said they would take the trip to the Listiguj First Nation, across the border from Campbellton, to buy discounted beer. But earlier this week an electrical fire took out the Restigouche Drive-Through.

The Restigouche Drive-Through sold tax free-beer to status Indians.

With a long weekend coming up Allison Metallic, owner of the store, said the place had been stocked up for peak season.

No one was injured, but about 300,000 to 400,000 bottles of beer were destroyed.

"We could actually hear the crackling on the floor, so we knew that there was a fire or something. And we immediately evacuated the whole building and not even in 10 minutes, the place was just full of smoke," said Metallic, who has owned the store for the last 25 years.

Customers from as far as Bathurst and Moncton would drive over the J.C. Van Horne bridge to get away from New Brunswick's alcohol taxes.

Larry Bell Disagrees w/Michigan Alcohol Reform Proposal

imageThis from MLive:

Existing law prevents proprietors from owning both a microbrewery, which produces beer for off-premise sales, and a brewpub, which sells beer on premise. The committee recommends combining the two into a single small brewer’s license.

There are ways around the law, by having two separate owners, but existing regulations didn’t promote growth, said Scott Graham, executive director of the Michigan Brewers Guild Inc.

“Some of the people who have successfully operated brewpubs, it seems to be a logical extension for some of them to then want to take some of their beers to market,” he said.

The committee also recommended allowing microbrewers and small winemakers from the state’s franchise law if they comprise less than 3 percent of a wholesaler’s volume. That would allow the brewers to cancel or renegotiate their contracts with wholesalers as their business grows.

“Franchise laws that were wisely put in place to protect wholesalers from the undue bargaining power of their largest suppliers need to be updated to protect small suppliers from that same undue bargaining power,” the committee wrote in its report.

That doesn’t sit well with Larry Bell, owner of Bell’s Brewery in Kalamazoo, which is by far the state’s largest beer maker.

He said the franchise exemption could hurt wholesalers who rely on small brewers.

WILK Friday BeerBuzz 29 June 2012 Purple Healer LDB IPA w/Larry Degreen

WILKFridayBerbuzz15Back in April of 2011 we welcomed a brand new brewer from a brand new local brewery.  We sampled his beers and watched a week later as he won the Taming of the Brew event award.

Jump ahead 14 months and Larry Degreen from Purple Healer is still brewing great beers, but in a new location.  Larry recently moved to Danville, PA and he’s not only still brewing great beers like his award winning  Rippinator Dopplebock, but he’s added 7 or 8 new beers to his lineup and even expanded his Puppy Hops line up of spent-grain dog biscuits.

imageToday we enjoyed sampling Larry’s new LDB IPA.  This is a mildly hoppy, slightly malty almost British-style IPA that has great body and an noticeable alcohol flavor.  It was fun hearing Larry’s story of the development of this beer *and it’s name), and even more fun to sample.

We were also lucky enough to sample some of Larry’s award winning Purple Possum.  This is a decidedly fruity & grape-flavored brew with lots of character and lots of flavor.  This was Larry’s fall seasonal offering and with the big body & flavor this beer carries, I think it’s a great seasonal offering for fall.

Larry has quite a few great beers so be sure to check out La Fontana Pizzeria in Bloomsburg & the other locations carrying Purple Healer beers.

Thank you to Larry Degreen from Purple Healer Brewing

, Nancy, John, & Joe for yet another fun Friday.

Samuel Adams Hop Sharing Program

image

I really love what Jim Koch is bringing back to the craft beer industry….and more good news today from Jim @ Samuel Adams:

I have been talking to brewers, hop dealers and to the craft brewers who have received loans from our Brewing the American Dream program and, have been told about the difficulties that many brewers are having getting some of the new and very in demand hops used in IPAs and other hoppy beers.

Hops like Simcoe, Citra and Ahtanum were sold out for the 2011 crop year and are very close to sold out for crop 2012. Hopefully, the 2012 crop year will be a good one and there will be excess hops above contracts but it is still too early to tell. At Boston Beer, we contract with hop dealers and growers (a practice which we and other members of the Pipeline Committee strongly recommend) and as a result, we believe that our current inventories will safely take us into the 2012 crop.

So, we think we can make some hops available to brewers who may be in greater need. Specifically, we can share up to 10,000 pounds of Simcoe, 10,000 pounds of Citra and 10,000 pounds of Ahtanum hops. They are type 90 pellets from the 2011 crop packaged in 44 pound boxes. As we did with our hop sharing program in 2008, we will sell them at our cost: $6.50 per pound for the Simcoe and the Citra and $5.50 per pound for the Ahtanum.

We want to help prioritize hops for brewers who really need them. Brewers may request a minimum of 1 box, which is 44 lbs. of one hop variety, and maximum of 10 boxes but in an effort to help as many craft brewers as we can, we will try to fulfill the first 6 boxes requested before we fulfill any additional boxes. If we receive more requests that we can fulfill, we will hold a lottery to fulfill the first 6 boxes of each request. The deadline to put in your request for hops in July 13, 2012.

We are trying to make these limited quantities of hops available to those who have a real need for them. So if you don’t really need them or just find the price attractive, we hope that you will not request hops. We are not a hop dealer and would prefer to keep these hops unless they are going to brewers who truly need them.

If you do need them, details of how to request hops can be found in our FAQ.

Founder & Brewer, The Boston Beer Company

Shocker: Anheuser-Busch Buys Remaining Shares of Modelo for $20.1 Billion (UPDATES)

image
Based on THIS I’d say we pretty much broke the news days ago that Anheuser-Busch would buy the remaining shares of Grupo Modelo.  The final word from Marketwatch:

BRUSSELS and MEXICO CITY, 29 June 2012 /Anheuser-Busch InBev and Grupo Modelo, S.A.B. de C.V. (bmv:GMODELOC) today announced that they have entered into an agreement under which Anheuser-Busch InBev will acquire the remaining stake in Grupo Modelo that it does not already own for USD 9.15 per share in cash in a transaction valued at USD 20.1 billion or MXN 278.6 billion[1]. The combination will be completed through a series of steps that will simplify Grupo Modelo's corporate structure, followed by an all-cash tender offer by AB InBev for all outstanding Grupo Modelo shares. The tender price represents a premium of approximately 30% to the closing price of Grupo Modelo series C shares on June 22, 2012.

The agreement is a natural next step given AB InBev's existing economic stake of more than 50% in Grupo Modelo and the successful long-term partnership between the two companies. The combined company would lead the global beer industry with roughly 400 million hectoliters of beer volume annually and 2012 estimated revenues of USD 47 billion. Its operations would span 24 countries with enhanced opportunities for 150,000 employees across the globe.

Update from Bloomberg:

AB InBev will appoint Maria Asuncion Aramburuzabala and Valentin Diez Morodo, said the person, who did not wish to be named because the news has not yet been publicly announced. Aramburuzabala and Diez Morodo are on the board of Mexico-city based Modelo.

8Wired Fresh Hopwired New Zealand IPA (Mikkeller Imports)

image

Details on a new brew from 8Wired brought to us by Mikkeller Imports.  This is 8Wired’s new Fresh Hopwired New Zealand IPA…details from Mikkeller:

Mikkeller is not just a brewery and a bar, it is also an import company. We import a lot of great beers from around the world.

In my opinion one of the most exciting breweries we import to Denmark is 8Wired from New Zealand.

Their iStout is fantastic, their HopWired is world class, and the newest beer is nothing less than amazing and world-class at the same time. HopWired Fresh Hop is its name. An IPA brewed with fresh hops from New Zealand.

This beer offers you a unique chance to taste those hops from New Zeeland fresher than you ever tasted them.

The beer has only been produced in very limited numbers. But if you get the chance to get your hands on one of these wet hopped IPAs, then have one. But you onl yhave a chance if you are among the fastest Beer Geeks around. We have sent onlyone case (12 beers) to Salling in Aarhus and that’s all that’s going to Jutland. In return, the most rapid Beer Geeks will be rewarded with an extraordinarily delicious beer.

Constellation Brands Buys Remainder of Crown Imports

image

Another billion dollar deal going on in the beer world today.  This from Reuters:

Constellation Brands Inc will buy the remaining half of its Crown Imports joint venture for $1.85 billion to get full control of distributing popular beers like Corona Extra and Modelo Especial in the United States.

Constellation shares jumped nearly 23 percent to their highest level in years on the news. The deal to buy out Grupo Modelo gives Constellation control of the best-selling imported beer in the lucrative U.S. market.

"We think this is transformative and positive to Constellation," said Stifel Nicolaus analyst Mark Swartzberg. He raised his rating on Constellation shares to "buy."

Constellation said on Friday it was buying out its joint venture partner, Mexican brewer Modelo, which is being acquired by Anheuser-Busch InBev

Analysts said anti-trust concerns likely prompted the sale of the stake, as AB InBev already controls some 49 percent of the U.S. beer market with brands like Bud Light.

Ballast Point–1 Barrel, 3 Products Three Sheets Rum, Then Beer Then Rum Again In The Same Barrel

28 June 2012

image

An interesting “experiment” from our friends at Ballast Point…intrigued….well read on:

The Experiment:

At Ballast Point, the search for flavor sometimes leads to uncharted territory. Four years ago, an utterance by Head Brewer/Distiller Yuseff Cherney—“I can’t wait for the day that we can fill our barrels with beer after we age our spirits”—was a thought that launched one such crazy quest.

We pride ourselves on the balanced flavors in our beers and the complex character of our spirits, but we had never tried blending those flavors.

The Process:

After aging Ballast Point Three Sheets Rum in a brand new White American Oak Barrel for two years, Cherney and Lead Brewer James Murray emptied the barrel and filled it with Victory at Sea, Ballast Point’s limited release Imperial Porter, to age for 1.5 years.

A couple of weeks ago, on June 6th, we emptied the barrel-aged Victory at Sea and that same day re-filled the barrel with Three Sheets Rum, which will age for two more years.

The Result:

A super-limited batch of barrel-aged Victory at Sea (we’ve tasted it and it’s killer), that we will release at select events throughout the fall and winter.

The Future:

Two years from now, we’ll have 200 bottles of barrel-aged Three Sheets Rum from a barrel that aged rum and an Imperial Porter.
