REMEMBERING DANNY

On January 31, 2012 Tröegs Brewery lost a family member.

Danny Glover didn’t work for Tröegs very long, but his death nine days after a car accident on an icy stretch of the Pennsylvania Turnpike shook the brewery to the core. Our brewery family is relatively young and to think that a 24 year-old guy who leaves in a car one morning (ironically to attend a funeral) could be gone a week later is unbelievable.

We first met Danny at Andy’s Corner Bar in New Jersey when he showed up for a Tröegs event. One of the last things Danny said to us that night was, “The next time you see me, I’ll be working at the brewery.” He had a job a Tröegs just a few months later.

Even if Danny’s arrival time for work was less than predictable and his uncanny ability to forget everything about his job overnight drove us nuts, he was a hard worker who would do any job with enthusiasm. But more importantly Danny had an infectious smile, a heart of gold and the absolute ability to spread joy through a room – it was hard not to love the guy.

That love was magnified 100 fold when more than 400 people showed up at Danny’s funeral. After shedding a lot of tears and sharing a few beers with his family and wide circle of friends, it was apparent that our brewery family was only one group of people lucky enough to know Danny.

If a tragedy like Danny’s death could have a silver lining, it happened when Danny’s parents agreed to donate his organs to the Gift of Life organ donation program. At least five people benefitted from Danny’s donation, including his Little League baseball coach who received Danny’s liver.

The Tröegs family knew we had to honor Danny and the only thing that made sense was to brew him a beer.

Dubbed “Danny’s IPA” and released as part of the Scratch Series, this black India Pale Ale is modeled after Danny’s favorite beer, Nugget Nectar. We’ve modified the grain bill and played with the hops – keeping in mind that Danny loved hops more than anything else.

In honor of our friend Danny Glover, Tröegs Brewery will donate $10 from every case of Danny’s IPA sold out of the brewery in Hershey to the Gift of Life Organ Donation program. Danny’s IPA will be available at Tröegs Brewery starting Friday, April 27 starting at 11 a.m.

If you cannot join us at that brewery, raise a glass in Danny’s honor on Friday night.
