30 November 2011

imageWe brought you this news AND sampled Woodchuck Crisp on the air with Vermont Hard Ciders CEO Bret Williams back in early Nov, so it was exciting to see the official press release come today from Woodchuck:

imageYes that’s right.  I could not possibly make this up and it is no where near April 1st, but the band Hanson (shown here at the KRZ appearance) have announced they will be launching a new beer brand to be named “MmmHop.”  The beer will actually be an IPA and is scheduled for release in Spring 2012.

Friday BeerBuzz–The Teaser 2 Dec 2011

WILKFridayBerbuzz8It was a real blast talking to Jim Koch from Samuel Adams on our last show, and it helped that we were sampling Jim’s new Tasman Red Red IPA.  Jim is the voice and face of the craft beer revolution and it was a real pleasure to have him on the Friday BeerBuzz.

So what will we be sampling this week? Hint: We’ll be waking our guest up this week at 5:30AM to talk holiday beer, and what a historical holiday beer this one is!

Tune in at 8:30AM and see what beer we sample on the Friday BeerBuzz on WILK…bringing good beers and good people together. (103.1FM or wilknewsradio.com).

Beach Brewing - Hoptopus Double IPA, Hammerhead IPA & Sea Devil

image

Just when you thought we had worked out every cool combination of words to describe a hoppy beer, Beach Brewing (VA Beach) brings is Hoptopus Double IPA.  For those graphically-challenged, that’s an Octopus with a  Hop-cone head.  We brought you Beach Brewing’s Tiger Shark Red Ale so I’m sensing a nautical theme here.  Looks like this 8.8%ABV 108 IBU DIPA will be packaged in 22oz bottles and use 8 hop-additions (to match the 8 legs of the octopus).

And up today 12/2 is Hammerhead IPA!

And now on 12/7 Sea Devil Imperial Stout (10% ABV, 75 IBU)

Samuel Adams Single-Batch Cinder Bock – Surrendered

image
It’s been reported that our friend Jim Koch an the guys at Samuel Adams would be adding a Fifth Brew to their single batch series called Cinder Bock Rauchbock, however so far it’s NOT true.  The Cinder Bock label you see was actually SURRENDERED today.  It will be interesting to see if this is a revision of the label and a new label will be approved soon, or this is in indication of dropping Cinder Bock from the single-batch line-up.  Odd (or a TTB error) that this is listed as surrendered and it was never listed as approved prior to today.  In any case looks like the plan is/was for  a 9.4% smoky double bock.

Redhook Long Hammer IPA–CANS!

image

We’ve been following along with the new packaging at Redhook with the release of the Long Hammer 22oz bottle release, so I was excited to see approval today for Redhook Longhammer 12oz CANS!  Looks like the beer remains the same, and it was also fun to see them update the “taste scale” with a can-shape rather than the traditional bottle.  I expect we’ll see more can releases from Redhook so stay tuned.

Millbock Brewing - Golden Toos

Today we have another new label approval from our friends Alan Miller & Albert Debock & Millbock Brewing (Harrisburg, PA) called Golden Toos.  We’ve talked about this beer in the past so it’s nice to see the label approved for 12oz bottles & kegs.  Looks like this big 10% brew will be a Belgian-Style Golden Ale, and I expect we’ll see the keg release very soon.

New Belgium Considers Philly for New Production Brewery

imageWe’ve heard all of the chatter about New Belgium Brewing coming to PA, but now comes word that Philadelphia is one of four  locations that  New Belgium is considering for a production brewery on the east coast.  Previously Asheville NC was named, and I suspect once again Tennessee is also in on the possibilities, but no details beyond that.  Looks like NB is aiming to do site visits in the next few weeks with a decision to be made by the end of the year…so stay tuned.

And this from NC courtesy of the abclocal may make it harder for Philly: The General Assembly has agreed to let larger beer-makers sell their product on site in a move supporters argue will attract a pair of breweries to set up in the North Carolina mountains and potentially generate 300 jobs

Northern Lights – Solar Winds in Bottles!

image

This is a beer I suspect most of my east coast peeps haven’t seen or even heard of, but as a regular traveler to Spokane, WA I can tell you this is my favorite Spokane brew.  This spring seasonal is “a crisp & refreshing springtime ale bursting with hop character” and I look forward to it every year.  The big surprise here is that what I believe was a keg-only beer, will now be released in 22oz bottles….and I may be going out on a limb here when I say that this beer always reminds me a little of our very own Nugget Nectar.

Nimble Hill Brewing–Mehoopany, PA

Just came across the recently updated website for Nimble Hill Brewery, opening in 2012 at the Nimble Hill Winery in Mehoopany, PA.  Check out my post from April 2011 on Nimble Hill planning a brewery….looks like I had it right and it looks like, based on their Flip video, they’ve already brewed a pumpkin beer to test out locally.  The beers will be brewed by owner Gary Toczko & our pal Mike Simmons with plans to potentially grow into a new brewery building in the future.

Brooklyn Brewery Warehouse SOLD $16M

imageThere has apparently been so much confusion Brooklyn Brewery selling their warehouse across the street from the brewery, that the brewery felt the need to issue a press release assuring people that the brewery it self has not been closed.

From Brooklyn:
Don’t worry, The Brooklyn Brewery is not going anywhere. Recent reports have indicated that our building has been sold, but it is only the building that houses our warehouse, situated across the street from the brewery and office space. Read a full report here from The Brooklyn Eagle, and sleep tight.

Yards - Olde Bartholomew Barleywine

Here’s the new 2012 packaging from our friend Steve Mashington & everyone at Yards Brewing for Olde Bartholomew.  Look for this big 10.3% ABV English-style barleywine to be packaged in 12oz bottles and release right around new years.  For those watching carefully, yes the ABV is up from the previous 9% for this “unfiltered, winter warmer with a smooth malt background, soft fruit overtones & slight hop spice in the finish.”

Flat Rock Brewing - Inclined Plane Ale

Since we’re on a PA-theme today, I thought you’d want a peek at a keg label for Flat Rock Brewing.  This is a new venture (yep the website isn’t even ready yet) coming out of Jones Brewing (Smithton, PA) and brewed in our very own Latrobe, PA brew facility.  A further connection I noticed is that the e-Mail address on the temporary website actually goes to Stoney’s Beer (another Jones Brewing name).

Kinzua Dam Beer - Fish Tale, General Joe & My Hearts Content (Warren, PA)

image image image

Here’s a new brewing venture starting up in Warren, PA called Kinzua Dam Beer (no website or Facebook page at this time).  This northwestern PA startup was started by Bill Core & his wife Sioux to bring fresh craft brewed beer to Warren County.  Bill is an avid home brewer and he’s now making the move to a larger ~2bbl system to be housed in the Warren Co business incubator center (Harmar St).  Today we have keg approvals for Fish Tale Scottish Ale, General Joe IPA & My Hearts Content Amber Ale.  As a bonus I have included the 12oz bottle label for My Hearts Content, however it is my understanding that bottles are well in the future so far for Kinzua Dam.
