WILK Friday BeerBuzz – 29 Oct 2010 (Bavarian Barbarian / Bullfrog Brewing Gothika)

WILKFridayBerbuzz12 Way back in July we welcomed Mike Hiller from Bavarian Barbarian Brewing into the studio as our first guest on the Friday BeerBuzz.  Mike was nice enough to bring some 2x2IPA to sample but also broke the news of a dark and sinister secret to our listeners.  Gothika…the evil demon spawn Bavarian Barbarian/Bullfrog Brewing co-brewed beer was in the barrels and fermenting as we spoke.  Bound by a solemn promise, Mike agreed to return to the studio with the evil master from Bullfrog to release Gothika into our meager sampling glasses….and today was that day.

Gothika There are “regular” beers, big beers and huge beers but Gothika is simply a beast.  This is an amazing and complex beer for sure and the dark heritage comes out in the flavor.  Lots of bourbon on the tongue and a really subtle smokey character and of course the boozy 9% mouth-feel that you’d expect.  Quite a combination of flavors and a really impressive co-brew from Mike & Terry.  I command you to get to WIlliamsport and sample this beer before Gothika comes looking for you.

Exciting New Beers from Shawnee Craft Brewing

I just heard from Leo and there are some exciting beers on tap @ the Gem & Keystone from Shawnee Craft.

Frambozenbier- This is our first true "sour" offering; it is a blend of fresh Raspberry Blanche (whole raspberries) and going on one year old Raspberries (aged on oak) with some very intriguing local micro-flora.

2009 Pumpkin Saison ("Tree-fitty")- Spontaneously refermented on oak for (350) days, this has soured nicely and is perhaps the most refined oak aged offering to date. We will put up a few sixtals for this Halloween weekend, and reserve the rest for blending and rainy days.

Time to Torpedo the Kegerators!

Now I know what you’re thinking when you read the title, but it’s not what you think.  Personally I don’t have a kegerator (yet), but I have always thought there are better ways to dispense beer, AND still use your kegerator.  For years my friends and I have added fresh hop cones to an already great IPA to enhance the fresh-hop flavor.  This practice graduated into a brewing technique.  Called Torpedo by Sierra Nevada and named Hopback by Troegs; the practice of infusing a beer has become a popular brewing technique.  The concept is to use a big stainless-steel cylinder filled with fresh hops (or herbs, spices, chocolate, fruit…) and put that device in-line as a beer is brewed.  The beer passes through that chamber to impart additional flavors as the beer is packaged. 

Jump forward to about 5 years ago when some beer bars started to add their own devices located at the point of pour.  In other words the beer passes through the hops right before it hits your glass.  It was a wonderful idea and of course Dogfish Head has now built a consumer market device to do just that on your home Kegerator.  Named Randall 3.0, the device allows you to infuse your beer not only with fresh hops, but also spices, herbs, fruits or anything you’d like to add to your beer.  This opens up a whole new way to “brew” your own unique beer, without actually brewing it yourself. 

In fine mybeerbuzz tradition, let me go on the record to say that we WILL see a cottage industry of people re-selling an existing beer that they “infuse” with their own special blend of ingredients.  Much like the infused spirits we already see in the market, I’m predicting there will be home-infused beers….so stay tuned.

Chip the Beer Guy–Victory Moonglow

Main ImageExciting to hear the guys talk about my buddy Lew Bryson and his upcoming appears in our area.  For anyone unfamiliar, Lew just completed his Pennsylvania Breweries 4th Edition and he’s hitting the road again for a book-signing tour.  Lew was nice enough to send me a copy back in Sept, and I can tell you this book is a wonderful reference for beer-lovers in PA and well worth picking up.  You can check out my review HERE (with links to where you can purchase).  In addition to Lew’s scheduled events (stay tuned for details), he’s also planning on stopping in to say hi at Krugel’s Georgetown Deli & Beer on Friday Nov 5th (5PM-ish).

Our beer of the day was Victory Moonglow Weizenbock.  Moonglow is a perennial favorite at Victory’s brewpub and a really interesting dark wheat.  Moonglow is readily available now in our area (yes Krugel’s has bottles in stock now) and is simply overflowing with traditional German malty flavor.  Expect the 8.7% ABV to get your attention, but this is also an easy drinking beer to be sure.  Unfiltered and typically available for Sept & Oct this is one worth seeking out.

Victory Brewing Dark Intrigue – Now We Know What the Barrels Were For

image Back in Sept we posted up info that Victory “leaked” in their FaceBook Page about the purchase of some new barrels…and now we know why.  Victory will be releasing a new beer called Dark Intrigue.  And based purely on a Victory twit (twitter not a person), the beer will be bottle-only and most likely a Nov 24th release.  Victory is calling this a “Malt Beverage Aged in Bourbon Barrels” but I’m hearing it is actually the Storm King recipe, aged in barrels…so it should be a pretty interesting beer.  Here’s the video.

WILK Friday BeerBuzz – 22 Oct 2010 (Old Forge Brewing Company Smashin’ Pumpkin)

WILKFridayBerbuzz7We’ve been fortunate enough to have some great guests join us in the studio for the Friday BeerBuzz.  I was really excited to welcome this week’s guest, a) so I finally had the chance to meet this busy brewmaster, and more importantly b) so I finally had a chance to taste his fall seasonal beer.  Today we welcomed Damien Malfara from Old Forge Brewing Company in Danville, PA and we sampled Damien’s fall seasonal Smashin’ Pumpkin Ale.  Old Forge Brewing Company (OFBC) is relatively new, opening their doors on Dec 5th 2008, and I’m happy to report they have already expanded their capacity to keep up with demand.  I also really love the theme of OFBC.  Damien and wife Maria highlight craftsmanship in many ways at OFBC.  From the locally grown produce to the hand crafted mug rack, mug club mugs, restaurant booths and of course their hand-crafted beers.  All in all a unique brewpub and wonderful tribute to craftsmanship.

OldForgePint It was really fun tasting such a great Pumpkin Ale, with the young man that hand crafted this beer and based on the fact that this beer is made with real pumpkins, I think I have some idea where the Smashin’ Pumpkin Ale moniker came from.  This is a very tasty beer so be sure to take the ride to Mill St in Danville to check out all of Damien’s brews.

WILKFridayBerbuzz7 I’m not only a long time drinker of Weyerbacher beers, but a long time lover of their line of big beers.  Maybe it was the way their simple Hops Infusion spoke to me, maybe it was the way their barrel aged Insanity lingered on my tongue and in my mind or maybe it was even the smile I still remember on my face when they first premiered Double Simcoe at a beer festival…but whatever the case I am a huge fan.  Sure it helps that Brother BeerBuzz has lived 5-mins from both Weyerbacher brewery locations for many moons, and of course it helps that I like a big beer…but it’s more than that…quite simply Weyerbacher does beer the way I would do beer (if I could do beer).

imperial-pumpkin weyerbacher.jpgToday Chris Wilson, head brewer for Weyerbacher joined us in the studio to talk about the Easton, PA brewery and some of their beers.  It was VERY cool to get to try Brewer’s Reserve MIKE before it’s even released and a lot of fun sampling Imperial Pumpkin Ale with Chris.  I’m not a huge fan of pumpkin beers, BUT Weyerbacher Imperial Pumpkin Ale has always been one I look forward to every year…hell we even drink it on the beach when we go on vacation every year.  Be sure to check out Weyerbacher Imperial Pumpkin Ale for yourself AND watch for Brewers Reserve MIKE coming very soon.

Troegs Scratch # 34

At Tröegs Brewery we love beers that tell a story and beers with surprise endings. Dubbed TBB, Scratch #34 is brewer Tim Mayhew’s take on his favorite beer style.The story behind TBB gets to the foundation of the Scratch Series – experiment..., educate, have fun and beware of pitfalls. We chose to bottle condition TBB as Tim wanted a near-champagne carbonation for this beer. However, yeast does what it does, and in this case, it crapped out before finishing. Even after Tim spent one evening reinvigorating the yeast (that means he shook the hell out of 180 cases of beer for 30 seconds each), the beer still would not finish and a decision had to be made. Always innovating, Tim and the brewers dumped as many bottles as possible into a wood barrel, and we will await the surprise ending. For now, enjoy Scratch #34 on draft and stay tuned for the complete story.

Scratch #34 packs a malty aroma suggesting raisins with hints of chocolate and caramel. On your taste buds, the raisin flavor continues along with traces of dark rum and subtle spice provided by the Westmalle yeast. It finishes with a slight hop bitterness.

Weyerbacher Riserva 2010

OK, here's the first official announcement I've put out. We've finally decided to release 2010 Riserva, likely in early to mid-November. I'll follow up with an exact date on the Beer Releases board here as soon as we know it.

We're currently waiting for neck tags to arrive, which we'll drape over the necks on the bottles with the following info printed:
Though its in the nature of a wild ale to be different each year, this years vintage is exceptionally different, and may not occur again. Riserva 2010 is a full fledged sour ale. Its tarter than ever, with notes of cider vinegar mingling with a more assertive raspberry palate than years past. The stronger acidity (tartness) of the beer has inhibited the bottle conditioning yeast, thus carbonation is scarce to low at best. But the beer is fantastic! Similar to what an Oud Bruin with raspberry might be like. Cheers!

We've been waiting months and the carbonation hasn't increased. Its about what you would call cask level carbonation. A pH test confimed its too low for the yeast to be active, they worked for a little while, but have been on siesta ever since June.

The thing is, if you like traditional sour ales, you'll love this beer! Just expect light carbonation. Its very full-bodied and full-flavored this year. I guess the third year of using the barrels has finally established a large enough microbe community.

Now you ask, "why might it not be like this again?". Good question. Answer is that every barrel is different. We had 38 barrels this year (52 gallons each) and we taste each one before we move it into the tank for bottling (I know, it is a tough job...). Five of the barrels were extraordinarily sour and the rest were just nicely sour. This is where many brewers (including traditional Belgians) decide whether or how to blend to produce the beer the way they want it to taste. We added these last 5 barrels one at a time and tasted the overall mix before adding the next one (yes, it is a great job!). We ended up adding all 5 barrels and thought this is the best Riserva yet.

You know the rest, too much tartness may lead to trouble carbonating.
So next year, we may only put in some of the extra sour barrels, keeping the pH where we need it to carbonate properly. Any sour barrels not added may be bottled as a different version, perhaps grand cru, of extraordinarily sour beer.

We agonized over the decision to release, but the beer tastes incredibly good. Love to hear any and all feedback right here. Thanks!

Chip the Beer Guy – Terrapin Coffee Oatmeal Imperial Stout

It was exciting to hear the guys sampling a Terrapin beer.  I’ll admit I’m still trying to figure out the “new'” morning team with Chip, and I’m not exactly sure what happened…but in any case the beer is a good one.  This is a beer we first sampled a few months ago and we really liked it.  Nicknamed Wake ‘n Bake, this beer has a ton of coffee flavor from Jittery Joe’s Coffee.  I had a chance to speak with Brian “Spike” Buckowski, brewmaster of Terrapin back in early Aug and I can tell you he’s a really funny guy and I’m excited by the beers he and Terrapin are releasing, especially some of the upcoming co-brews like Monstre Rouge.  Cheers guys….great beer for sure….so wait…who’s on the show now??

WILKFridayBeerbuzz4 As we plough through our 6th month of doing the Friday BeerBuzz show, I’m amazed not only at how much fun it is, BUT also just how many great beers there are out there to share with your friends.  I think as a longer-term craft beer lover, I sometimes forget how exciting it is to discover a new beer…and the Friday BeerBuzz (and your comments) have been a great reminder of that excitement. 

Last week we tasted not only a big beer, but a huge beer in AleSmith’s Speedway Stout.  Lots of flavor, wonderful texture and the ABV doesn’t hurt either.  I’m also excited that we can ALL try AleSmith beers in NEPA without having to travel to San Diego.  Cheers to us in NEPA for driving the demand for AleSmith beers and thanks to Krugel’s and Bella Vista for getting them here.

So what will we be tasting this week?

WILK Friday BeerBuzz – 8 Oct 2010 (AleSmith Speedway Stout)

WILKFridayBerbuzz7 I’m a big fan of sweet and imperial stouts and after the last few weeks I think that’s pretty obvious.  My problem with stouts is I like BIG stouts.  Regular stouts are OK, but for me if you’re going to sample a dark beer, it needs to be big.  After we paired up a Chocolate Stout with Mother Beerbuzz’s cookies, I started thinking that we needed a counterpoint beer.  A beer to show how great a sweet stout the Rogue was but also showcase how good a dark chocolate imperial stout can be.

My choice was driven not only by the fact that AleSmith beers are JUST reaching NEPA, (this beer arrived only a few days ago)….but also by the fact that this is a great imperial stout.  I used to have to travel to San Diego to get AleSmith beers (see photo below), but thanks to Bella Vista distributors in Philly, Krugels and of course AleSmith, now you can get their beers locally…and they are well worth seeking out.AleSmithSPeedway

This beer is not only big in flavor with strong coffee, caramel and dark chocolate flavors, but really big in alcohol.  At 12% ABV this beer will kick your butt and take your name, so enjoy it carefully.   It also comes in a larger 750ml bottle, so be sure to share it with friends.

Pennsylvania Breweries 4th Edition – Lew Bryson

LewBrew On Sept 21st local beer author, beer historian, beer connoisseur, beer drinker, and my buddy, Lew Bryson, released his book  Pennsylvania Breweries 4th edition.  Lew was nice enough to send me a copy (full disclosure), and I’ve really been enjoying the read.  For those unfamiliar, PA Breweries is Lew’s 4th edition of this great beer resource and features the breweries, brewpubs, beer bars, beer destinations and even local attractions from the lovely state of PA.

Lew selflessly managed to perform the arduous task of visiting breweries, brewpubs and beer bars to methodically sample the many brews they have to offer, and even somehow managed to not only remember everything, but also turn it into a well organized book.  PA Breweries is an absolute encyclopedia for the PA beer lover, and a fantastic reference source for anyone exploring the brewing resources in PA.

Pennsylvania has a very rich brewing history and Lew also does a great job of giving us the historical flavor for many of our breweries, and really paints the picture for how each brewery got to where they are (or are not) today.  I’m also really excited to see all of our local NEPA brewers and bar owners gaining the recognition they so deserve. 

And finally I’d be telling a lie if I didn't say I was excited to see my name and my humble blog getting a mention in Pennsylvania Breweries 4th edition.  I had a lot of fun discussing our local breweries and beer businesses with Lew so the mention in his book was icing on the cake.  Thanks again Lew.

Lew’s book is available on Amazon, and Lew will be making the rounds signing copies at various locations over the next few months so be sure to pick up a copy for yourself.

Chip the Beer Guy - Sly Fox Oktoberfest

I ran into Chip last week at the Berwick Brewing Co Oktoberfest celebration so it was no surprise to hear Chip on the show today in full Lederhosen featuring another Oktoberfest beer from Sly Fox.  This is one of the many canned beers coming out of Sly Fox and other breweries like Lion, 21st Amendment and Oskar Blues.  Sly Fox comes to us from Phoenixville/Royersford PA and their Oktoberfest comes in at a mild 5.8% ABV and 25 IBU.  Sly Fox Oktoberfest is a seasonal package available in cans, sixtels and kegs…and of course it’s available at Krugels Georgetown Deli & Beer.

Join us on Fri, Oct 8 for the release of Scratch #35 – Fresh Hop Ale. This hoppy beer was brewed with fresh citra hops delivered overnight from hop farms in Oregon. We will celebrate the release of Scratch 35 with a firkin on the bar in the Troegs Tasting Room.

Tapping will be at 10 a.m. (or whenever the first customer walks in the bar and orders a pint).We also have a firkin of Pale Ale with Fresh Citra Hops to be tapped as well – as long as we have an enthusiastic crowd!Hope to see you Friday!

Friday BeerBuzz – The Teaser (8 Oct 2010)

WILKFridayBeerbuzz4 Last week we rolled out what is perhaps my favorite sweet stout (Rogue Chocolate Stout) and paired it with Mother BeerBuzz’s brown sugar drop cookies—without a doubt my favorite cookies.  Everyone in the studio loved the beer and the beer/food combination, so we’ll definitely try this out again….and you should too.  Experiment with your favorite beer/food pairings and maybe we’ll try one of yours on the air. 

We also welcomed Beki Krantz-Kosydar from home brewing sensation Krantz Brewing Co to sample her Fuggles IPA AND as if that wasn’t crazy enough we had Sebbie Buhler, (the woman pictured on the bottle) on the phone to help us sample Rogue Chocolate Stout.  All in all a crazy but fun show.

So what will we be tasting this week? 

Hint: This week we’ll feature a beer that I used to have to race all the way  to the west coast to sample.

Plaza Beverage - Even More Great Beer

PlazaSculpin We were running low on cases so I stopped at Plaza Beverage to pick up some supplies.  I was excited to see how many new beers Charlie has, so many so that he’s even added a new row of shelves  to get them all in.  He’s got some great new beers and quite a selection of craft beer in general.  I picked up Ballast Point Sculpin, Cigar City Jai Lai, and Ithaca Flower Power but I was really debating the Bear Republic Racer 5, Bells 2-Hearted Ale, Southern Tier 2x and Weyerbacher Harvest among others.  Be sure to stop down and check it out for yourself.

WILK Friday BeerBuzz – 1 Oct 2010 (Rogue Chocolate Stout)

WILKFridayBerbuzz7 I’m a firm believer that if you choose a beer you love, and you talk about why you love it…people with love that beer too.  Now I know the word “love” appeared 3 times in the first sentence already, but I have to say, “I really Love Rogue Chocolate Stout.”  Not only is this the standard by which all other Chocolate Stouts are judged, it simply achieves what Rogue brewmaster John Maier is know for achieving in all of his beers…”balance.”  John balances malt, hops and other ingredients better than many other brewmasters, and so well that perhaps his brews seem to fly under the radar.  In these days of big bold aggressive flavors, John’s brews are simply delicious without hitting you over the head.

I’ll admit the flavor in Rogue Chocolate Stout is big, but taste it again and you’ll find it is big in flavor, but subtle in taste.  The chocolate is present for sure, but it melts into your palate like any good chocolate would, and leaves you wanting for the next sip.

A big thank you to Sebbie Buhler (the woman actually pictured on the bottle) from Rogue Brewing for coming on the air with us this morning.  Sebbie has been with Rogue since 1991 and clearly knows a lot about the culture and beers of Rogue.  Rogue beers were one of my earliest experiences with craft beer in our area, and still today I really enjoy all of their beers.  Mrs. BeerBuzz and I met over a Rogue beer and John Maier was even nice enough to brew and specially label our wedding beer.  Rogue brews a huge variety of regular, specialty and even uniquely packaged beers AND their beers are readily available in NEPA and still a very good value. 

AND as if the Rogue Chocolate Stout wasn’t good enough on it’s own, we decided to launch the first Friday BeerBuzz beer and food pairing today.  Other than Pizza and cheese-fries, I’ll admit I’m fairly new to true food/beer pairings…so today I decided to go for desert.  Our pairing today included Mother BeerBuzz’s brown sugar drop cookies and our Rogue Chocolate Stout and it worked really well.  Knowing that Mother BeerBuzz will never give up her recipe, I’d suggest trying Rogue Chocolate Stout with vanilla ice cream (like a root beer float) or even any other sweet cookies or cakes.  Try it for yourself and please let us know your results.
