Breaker Brewing – News & Brews

BreakerBrewingLogoNew Just heard from Chris @ Breaker and he tells me They’ve just added Madison’s in Nanticoke to their list of Breaker bars (Anthracite Ale coming up). They will also will be working with the Wilkes-Barre Breakers Rugby team to make them their own beer tentatively named "Bloody Rugger Ale". The Breaker Brewing Pumpkin ale is almost ready and should be in some bars by next week, they have made a few batches of Belsnickler Ale to be ready for December. Also some time in January keep and eye out for their "16 Ton IPA" which will be an imperial IPA and Lunch Pail Ale which will be a very similar recipe to the original I-Love-PA.  Good stuff guys…can’t wait to try all the new beers.

Breaker Brewing Co – I Love PA (IPA) New Recipe

ELmerSuddsLogo For anyone looking to try the new hoppier recipe for I Love PA, it’s not only on tap @ Elmer Sudds right now, but it’s also on Hand Pump!

Lion Brewery – Label Fun

Today’s label is a different version of the Hope Red Rooster Ale label I posted last week.  This one looks to be updated (i.e. newer), but I still know little about it.

Shawnee Craft Brewing – Grand Opening

ShawneeCraftLogo I’ve just heard from Leo and he tells me the opening of the Gem & Keystone will be Oct 22nd.  He’s planning some interesting stuff for that night including some Ales, Lagers, nitro-draft offerings and perhaps an interesting Saison or two…so stay tuned.  For now the pub/tasting room is on hold,,,but again stay tuned for details in the future.

Shawnee Craft Brewing – Gem & Keystone

ShawneeCraftLogo Thanks to Scott for passing on this info about Shawnee Craft Brewing….

From the Gem & Keystone press release:

Introducing The Gem and Keystone

Shawnee on Delaware, Pennsylvania---Presenting the finest local and regional ingredients, uniquely prepared to pair with selections from its exclusive onsite brewery, The Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort is scheduled to unveil a new dining experience, The Gem and Keystone, opening September 3, 2009.

Enhancing the resort's reputation as one of the top dining destinations in the area, The Gem and Keystone is destined to become not only one of the top restaurants in the Pocono Mountains, but throughout the Northeast. The Gem and Keystone will be the home of ShawneeCraft brewing, a special new feature of the historic resort. Many of the classic American pub items will be cooked with different styles of ShawneeCraft beers, while every selection will be created to complement different styles of beer.

"We are excited about infusing fresh ideas into an invigorated menu, " said General Manager Daniel Rothman, a longtime chef and one of the region's leaders in the implementation of "farmfresh" whol foods into dining. "We know our guests will enjoy every visit to The Gem and Keystone".

Formerly Sam Snead's Tavern, the revitalized restaurant will feature all-natural choice cuts of meats, including lamb from Jamison Farms, of Latrobe, PA--to be showcased in new menu items, such as the braised lamb shank with root vegetable and crisp gnocchi. Along with fresh locally raised trout, which thrives virtually right outside the door, seafood selections will be taken from the Smithsonian Sustainable Seafood List.

The restaurant will prepare produce from its own private garden, while fostering relationships with local farmers, artisan cheese-makers and others to present the highest form of quality seasonal cuisine.

Regulars will find many Sam Snead's favorites reprised on the new menu, including choice, juicy steaks, smoky tender ribs, our fabulous crab cakes and more. The Gem and Keystone will put its special touches on them, all designed to satisfy long-time guests and new visitors alike.

The setting will maintain its familiar golf theme, with more emphasis on Shawnee's own storied golf history. Guests will also enjoy the addition of period art, antique brewery pieces and local artists' work on the nature and scenery of the Delaware River and its surrounding area.

The motto of ShawneeCraft Brewing Company, "True to Nature, True to the Craft", is embodied in its perference for natural and local products, and is contributing to Shawnee's ongoing program to shrink its carbon footprint. This commitment to nature, craftsmanship, and authenticity is the core principle of ShawneeCraft. Under the direction of brewmaster Leo Bongiorno, ShawneeCraft Brewing Company makes artisanal, heirloom, whole-food beers right at the resort. Only the finest ingredients are used, sourced as locally and as organically as possible, with the lightest possible environmental impact, and with no artificial ingredients or stabilizers whatsoever. Current offerings include a variety of session ales and lagers, as well as barrel aged specialties - the list continues to grow.

The Gem and Keystone will open daily for lunch and dinner, with lunch starting at 11:30am and dinner at 4:00pm. The restaurant will continue to host private parties and group events as well. The new restaurant will open September 3, 2009.

Bullfrog Brewery – GABF

24 September 2009

From Bullfrog:

Hi Bullfrog friends,

This Saturday afternoon at 3pm we invite you to join us at the Bullfrog to watch a live broadcast of the awards ceremony from the Great American Beer Festival in Colorado. The Bullfrog Brewery has entered 8 beers in the 2009 competition and hopes to bring home another medal.

We will be rolling out a big screen TV to watch the ceremony and we will have some "super secret medal specials" for those in attendance if we are awarded a medal again this year.

For those of you who are not familiar, the Great American Beer Festival is considered the Olympics of beer competitions. You may remember our esteemed brewmaster Terry Hawbaker brought home a gold medal from the 2008 competition in the Barrel Aged Sours category for Beekeeper. We're hoping for another gold in 2009!

Rock 107 – One Guy Brewing – Breaker Brewing Co - Purvs

Just a heads up that tomorrow (9/25) is the final date of the Rock 107 small-town tour and the guys will be appearing at Purv’s in Peckville.  Guests on the show are rumored to be Guy Hagner from One Guy Brewing and Mark & Chris from Breaker Brewing Co…in addition to Chip the beer guy.  Should be a fun show so stop by or tune in….and yes it was pure coincidence that the Purvs post ended up just above the Nude Beer post.

Lion Brewery – Label Fun

So we made it almost two weeks into our label fun before we slipped into the gutter.  I’ll deny any involvement and blame it strictly on popular demand.  For pure scientific beer label purposes only, I present Nude Beer!  This one comes from the 1980’s (Golden Beverage Company) timeframe and features nude # 15 (of about 59 or 60 I believe).  To keep our rating PG-13, this one has not had the lottery-ticked-bikini coating scratched off.

Shawnee Craft Brewery - Pictures

23 September 2009

It’s been a while since we posted up some info on Shawnee Craft Brewery so I thought I’d share a few photos from Leo.  I present “brewing” and “drinking” and be sure to note the Porkslap shirt Leo is sporting.  To quote Leo…”ShawneeCraft™ makes artisanal, heirloom, whole-food beers from the finest ingredients, sourced as locally and as organically as possible, with the lightest possible environmental impact, and with no artificial ingredients or stabilizers whatsoever.”

Old Forge Brewing Company – New Beers

OFBCLogoFor those that haven’t noticed, I just thought I’d post up two of the new beers Damien has recently brewed @ Old Forge Brewing Co.  The first is currently on tap and is called Old Trafford Pale Ale…( This session ale is an English style pale ale, with a toasted caramel malt profile, low alcohol and subtle bitterness despite the large amounts of English hops.)  The second is in the tanks and is called Ludwig’s Anniversary Lager (A reddish/amber Oktoberfest style beer in honor of Prince Ludwig's anniversary.  Big, bold, with plenty of malt flavor to satisfy any palate.)

Bullfrog – Hop Harvest 2009

22 September 2009

BullfrogLogoFrom Terry:

Hop Harvest 2009 on tap now!...This beer starts out as a straightforward E.S.B. and is then transformed with a huge dose of sticky, wet hops fresh from the Yakima Valley. This year I used a blend of Simcoe and Chinook hops at a whopping rate of 4.3 ...pounds per barrel suspended right in the serving tank so as it's served more of their goodness oozes out!

AuRants – Michael J. Matosky

After a very successful open house for AuRants, I am sad to report that co-owner Michael J. Matosky died of a heart attack Sunday morning while driving home from the open house.  Information on the funeral can be found HERE.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to Michael’s friends and family and to his new family at AuRants.

Lion Brewery – Label Fun

This one is fairly unique, and another one (like the 1/2 label of my earlier post) that I had not even heard of…Trupert American Pilsner Beer!  Anyone know any details of this one?

Lion Brewery – Label Fun

20 September 2009

Here’s a cool label, also from the 1970’s featuring Stegmaier Porter.  I’m fascinated at how many label variations there are for Steg Porter.

mybeerbuzz – IPA Challenge

HLHappyHourIPAChallengeWe had a little Hoppy Hour tasting party at the mybeerbuzz residence on Friday, and just for fun we did a blind IPA-ish challenge.  It was a lot of fun to see people sample some great IPA’s without the benefit of knowing what they were tasting.  And before anyone comments, yes I know they are not all completely considered to be an IPA.  Anyway here’s a little snapshot of the bottles.  Also before you ask who the winner was, I’ll simply say that all of us who were lucky enough to enjoy all of these great beers, were the winners.

Lion Brewery – Label Fun

18 September 2009

Today’s Lion Brewery label comes straight out of the 1970’s and features Stegmaier Bock Beer.  Also note that it is “truly brewed".

Chip the Beer Guy Rock 107 - Germany

I know what you’re saying, “Two CBG posts in one week?”  Well when Chip is in Germany for Oktoberfest with Guy Hagner, I think it merit’s a 2nd post.  Because the daily phone calls this week were brief, Chip used today’s segment for a summary show:

  • Chip & the crew have toured several breweries, Paulaner, Augustiner, Weihenstephaner, Andechs as well as many local pubs.
  • Chip actually witnessed a young fraulein fall on a table while he was on the air.
  • Because they are hitting the non-tourist pubs, only German is spoken in most and Guy is apparently their German translator.
  • Chip likes their “organ meats.”  Now he’s talking about liver, and all sorts of other glands & meaty stuff.  This is not news….however after the “John likes taking it in the can” comment from a few weeks back, I’m amazed John let that one get by without a long-distance zing.
  • Chip & the crew are heading for Bamberg tomorrow after watching the Oktoberfest parade (Yes the real Oktoberfest begins tomorrow.)
  • Germans typically drink a Helles-style lager or Dunkel for Oktoberfest and NOT the traditional Marzen-style beers we in the US consider to be Oktoberfest beers.
  • Chip will be back on the radio Monday live from their Oktoberfest session under the tents.

Be sure to tune into Rock 107 Monday morning for the live Oktoberfest show….AND be sure to check out the rock107.com podcasts from this week’s CBG shows.

Bullfrog Brewery – Firkin Friday

17 September 2009

From Bullfrog:

BullfrogBrewingHappy Thursday friends,

The weekend is almost here and we've got a great line up of cool stuff happening.

Friday Terry will be cracking open a firkin of Hop Harvest, a special 10bbl batch that is wet hopped with a 43 lb blend of Simcoe & Chinook hops...YUM!!!!  Plan on stopping in right away after work or you'll miss your chance to taste this special brew.

Madison’s Oktoberfest – Nanticoke Sept 25-26

MARTINI 01 I’ve just heard that Madisons (396 E Washington St, Nanticoke) will be holding their first Oktoberfest celebration next weekend (Fri 9/25 and Sat 9/26).  Their menu and details can be found HERE.  I understand they’ll be having quite a few different bottled Oktoberfest beers such as Leinenkugel’s , Dundee, Jack’s Pumpkin Spice, Stegmaier & Sam Adams…and possibly more…and some great traditional Oktoberfest foods (in addition to their regular menu).  Hope to see you there!

Chip the Beer Guy Rock 107 - Oktoberfest

OktoberfestMunich For those that haven’t been following along, Chip the beer guy from Rock 107 & Guy Hagner from One Guy Brewing are in Munich for Oktoberfest.  They’ve been calling in live every morning this week to report on the festivities.  Today the guys were at the Hoffbrau house in South Munich enjoying a litre (or three) of fine German beers.  Of note on today’s call was the fact that after 4PM no half-litre beers are served in most Munich bars.  Poor guys having to drink litres all night.  The calls this week have been brief, but tomorrow’s call promises to be a longer recap of all the beers he’s been sampling all week….so stay tuned tomorrow for the wrap-up show.

New Beers @ Capones as of 9/16

I know there’s been some interest in having Capone’s tap list on mybeerbuzz.com, so I thought I’d post it out.  If there’s enough interest in seeing it on a regular basis, please comment in and we can consider adding a dedicated page for Capones.  Here are some of the new bottles Matt is stocking now and his current tap list.

16 September 2009

Today we have the famous Professor Bartel with his Bartel’s Pure Beer.  Not sure of the age of this one.

Lion Brewery – Some Exciting New Toys

15 September 2009

SabcoI just heard from Leo, and he tells me Lion Brewery just purchased a 1bbl Sabco system.  The system will be used for brewing test batches and one-off brews.  For those unfamiliar, the Sabco system is used and endorsed by Sam Calagione from Dogfish Head.  DFH uses it to test many of their brews before they go into large scale brewing.  This is very exciting news for local craft beer lovers, and I think it adds considerable flexibility for Lion allowing them to experiment and create some interesting and potentially small-batch beers.  CHeers guys…please keep us up to date.

Breaker Brewing Co – Pot Belly Pumpkin Peek

BreakerBrewingPumpkinJust thought you’d want to see a quick peek at Breaker Brewing Co’s new Pot Belly Pumpkin Ale going into the tanks.  It’s actually more of a picture of Mark looking into the tanks, but you get the idea.  Stay tuned for details on the release of Pot Belly Pumpkin Ale.

AuRants – Open House Sept 19th

14 September 2009

AurantsLogoFinal I’m excited to report that Aurants has scheduled their Open House for Sept 19th (This Sat.) from 7PM until ??.  Aurants is a new restaurant and beer bar featuring Dave Ciminelli as the chef (formerly from River St Ale House) and Chris & Teddy also formerly from the Ale House.  Chris tells me the kitchen isn’t quite in full swing yet, but they should have some soups and appetizers, and of course beer.  I’m still awaiting the bottle list and the final tap lists, but it looks like the first beer order is in and includes Maredsous 10, Unibrou La Fin Du Monde, Youngs Double Chocolate Stout, DFH Punkin, and Duvel among others.  Stay tuned for more details on their grand opening (tentatively scheduled for Oct 14th), and even a special firkin from Terry @ Bullfrog Brewery for one of their events.  Also stay tuned for the mybeerbuzz.com AuRants page coming soon…

A Visit to Krugel’s Georgetown Deli & Beer

KrugelsLogoI stopped in to visit Krugel’s today so I wanted to add a quick post.  I was pleasantly surprised to see how many different beers Joe has in stock..and yes for those asking he does have Stone 09-09-09 and Troegs Java Head Stout.  Other notables include Bear Republic Racer 5, Weyerbacher Imperial Pumpkin, Zotten & 14, Founders Cerise, Erie Derailed, Stone Cali-Belgique & 13, Sierra Nevada Anniversary and many many more.  The food smelled great so do yourself a favor and stop by to check it out for yourself.

Lion Brewery – Label Fun

Next up, al oldie but a goodie…Stegmaiers’ Bock.  Note that it’s Stegmaiers and not Stegmaier.  This one comes from around 1940 or earlier.

Bullfrog Brewery – News & Firkins

BullfrogLogoI’ve heard from Terry and there is quite a bit of exciting news coming out of Bullfrog Brewery.  Terry’s working on a special firkin of 18-month old barrel aged flemish red that is heading to our area.  This firkin is going to be tapped at the grand opening of AuRants in Duryea (stay tuned for details on the upcoming opening of AuRants.)  Terry also tells me he’s working two special firkins of his tank aged Liquid Sunshine sour ale wet hopped with fresh Simcoe & Chinook hops (Terry’s aiming for the Undead ED Wild IPA release in Oct.).  Last but perhaps most exciting is that Bullfrog will be tapping Terry’s Hop Harvest Ale this Friday (9/18).  This is a 10bbl batch that is wet hopped with a 43 lb blend of Simcoe & Chinook hops.  Can’ t wait to try them all and stay tuned here for further details on Bullfrog beers.

Lion Brewery – Label Fun

12 September 2009

I know many of you are not only fans of the Lion Brewery beers, but also tremendously interested in the long and rich history of the Lion Brewery brands and beverages.  In that light, I thought it would be fun to post up some of the historical, and not-so-historical labels and brands to come out of Lion Brewery.  I welcome submissions of photos or stories and I’ll post them up for all to see.  I’ll give whatever details I can on the time-frame/history of each label, but I’ll admit there are many I know very little about.  Without further delay I begin the Lion Label series.

This one comes in from the 1950’s and it’s Stegmaier Gold Medal Beer.

One Guy Brewing Oktoberfest 2009

11 September 2009

Just a subtle Reminder….

One Guy Brewing Oktoberfest Oct 8-11 & Oct 15th –18th

How about a little Friday Butt Monkey?

ButtMonkeyBeer Founded in 2003, Buttmonkey Beer, LLC was incorporated in Delaware and their headquarters are currently in Atlanta, GA.  Out of such a fine corporate name came this fine example of beer marketing, Butt Monkey Beer, Chimp Chiller Ale!  You may ask why we’re talking Butt Monkey on our little local beer blog..and the answer is…because it’s local.  Brewed & packaged by our very own Lion Brewery, this brand has actually been successful.  Somewhere along the line the beer was renamed to Bad Monkey and continues to be sold in many states, including PA (Galli Distributing in New Kensington, PA).  The original bottle features such catchy slogans as:
“Get off your butt and grab a monkey.”
“Born of irreverence for your enjoyment.”
“We know it’s a chimp, just drink the beer.”
“A fine ale brewed to perfection for the more discriminating taste.”

BadMonkey continues to be brewed by Lion Brewery and now includes four other beverages, Ape Ale, Lemur Lager, Baboon Brew and Orangutan Red.  Of course I couldn’t resist inventing my own suggested BadMonkey brews…

Simian Saison
Gorilla Guze
Monkey Malt Liquor
Rhesus Rauchbier
Macaque Marzen (For Macaque-toberfest)

Feel free to add you own and please feel free to comment in with more Butt Monkey stories and details.  Fascinating stuff for a Friday.

Chip the Beer Guy Rock 107 – Breaker Brewing Olde King Coal Stout

BreakerBrewingLogoNewToday’s show featured our very own Chris & Mark from Breaker Brewing Company.  As I reported earlier, there is a lot of good news coming out of Breaker Brewing.  More and more local beer bars are serving up BBC beers, so many that the guys just had to purchase 30 more sixtels.  There are three new beers coming, Lunch Pale Ale (the renamed first version of I Love PA IPA), a new hoppier I Love PA (in the tanks now), the new Pot Belly Pumpkin Ale (also in the tanks) and their Christmas/Holiday ale to be named Belsnickler Ale—with Belgian candied sugar.  It’s always great to hear the guys on the radio and more importantly getting the recognition they deserve.  We very quickly forget how hard it is to do what Chris & Mark are doing, let alone how hard it is to be successful doing it.  Keep in mind Breaker Brewing Co is their second job.

Today the guys tasted Olde King Coal Stout, one of my favorite BBC beers.  They also revealed that their Belsnickler Ale will be bottled in bombers for aging and also perhaps aged in oak barrels for later consumption (stay tuned for details).

Congratulations guys and thanks to Chip, John, Jay & Ruthie for an entertaining show.  Cheers!

Grab a lamb handle and savor this Kellar Fest.

Lion Brewery – Half

Here’s a little tidbit that I had never seen before.  Check out the Lion Brewery label and be sure to read why it’s named “Half.”  Interesting huh?

Chip the Beer Guy Rock 107 – Cold Springs Honey Almond Weiss

WebsterCan I’ll start today’s post by saying something I rarely ever say.  Today’s beer of the day is not only a beer I’ve never tried, but a brewery I’ve never even heard of.  Who knew Minnesota had a brewery called Cold Springs, let alone a beer called Honey Almond Weiss.  Sounds interesting to me, but as a lager, I’m not really sure how this one would taste to my non-lager-liking taste buds.  In any case interesting choice guys.

Today’s show made me a little envious.  Not of the beer but of Chip’s upcoming trip to Munich for Oktoberfest.  One of these years, I’ll try it out for myself, but it certainly sounds like a lot of work, a lot of expense BUT a lot of fun.

I would be remiss if I didn't mention the highlight of the show.  No I’m not talking about the Rock 107 small-town tour visiting beautiful Harvey’s Lake, I’m talking about Chip’s zinger of the day.  I’m pretty sure the rating of the show went from PG-13 to R when John said he’d take it “when” he can and Chip repeated that John takes it “in the can.”  It was hilarious guys and certainly a blush that I was able to hear over the radio.

Good stuff as always….Cheers and enjoy Oktoberfest.
