Chip the Beer Guy Rock 107 - Shipyard Pumpkinhead

31 October 2008

I'm not sure if it's because the boys are on the road for Halloween or not, but the Chip the Beer Guy segment was about as long as this post will be. The beer was Shipyard Pumpkinhead, you can get it at Grotto for $2.50 today, it's spicey, pumpkin beer started with Buffalo Bill Brewing and Chip dressed as a drunk as a child for Halloween. Happy Halloween.

Lion Brewery - New Brew? - Opinions Wanted!

27 October 2008

I've heard from Leo Orlandini and Bob Klinetob (Brewmasters @ Lion Brewery). Leo and Bob are interested in hearing from the local beer and craft beer community in NEPA. Obviously the above beer label is my creation, and who knows what direction this will ultimately go....BUT...

Leo and Bob would like to know, "what style of beer would the craft beer lovers of NEPA like us to brew?"

Please add your comments (click on comments below), OR e-Mail me your opinions at and I'll pass them on to Leo and Bob. I think this is a wonderful opportunity for the beer lovers in NEPA to have their opinion heard by the guys brewing the beers and by the very guys that play a major role in deciding what future beers Lion Brewery may brew. Speak up NEPA beer lovers!

Beer Find of the Week - Troegs Hopback Amber

25 October 2008

This weeks beer find of the week comes to us from Dugan's. Now I know many people love HopBack and many people have had Troegs HopBack Imperial Amber Ale in bottles....but ask yourself this... have you had it on draft? Dugan's just tap'd a sixtel of HopBack so do yourself a favor and stop down and try it. I'll conservatively say it's amazing on draft. I offer up this sixtel ring & cap (Thanks Charlie) as a temptation to stop in. Cheers! But wait..Who HAS had HopBack on draft in the past?? Please comment in!

Troegs Tasting Room

23 October 2008

Here's a link to a great article on the Troeg's tasting room and another feeble excuse for me to say "Mad Elf is OUT!"

Clicky Here

For those keeping score. Plaza Beverage has Mad Elf in cases and Sabatinis has it in 12oz & 22oz bottles.

Lion Brewery to make Steg Porter available in Sixtels

22 October 2008

I've just heard from Leo Orlandini that Lion Brewery will be racking sixtels of Stegmaier Porter in the next Porter production run in Dec. This is great news for those that can only fit sixtels into their home or bar systems. Here's Leo's note...

We plan on putting up sixtels of Porter during our next production, which most likely will be in December. If you are interested in sixtels of Porter, please contact your local distributor and ask them to let Verrastro know. This way we can make sure we put up an adequate amount.

Lion Brewery On-Tap Locally !

21 October 2008

We've asked, and Lion was nice enough to respond. Check out the mybeerbuzz Lion Brewery page and you'll see a list of where each of Lion Brewery's beers can be found on tap locally. I think this is a great idea and I thank Leo Orlandini and the staff @ Lion Brewery for making this happen.
PS Lindo tells me the Steg porter is doing fantastic! It's almost kicked in just 4 days and he'll be keeping it on tap.

Wegman's Beer & Food Pairing

20 October 2008

Wegman's is sponsoring a beer & food pairing event at their stores (Wilkes-Barre is included) on Saturday Oct 25th from 11AM-3PM. Should be interesting and if anyone has any more details or makes it out to Wegman's for the event, please let us know.

Chip the Beer Guy Rock 107 - Thomas Hooker Oktoberfest

17 October 2008

So it has come to this....week four of the Oktoberfest marathon...and I'm simply out of jokes. Anyone who knows me, knows I'm no huge Lager fan and less of a Pumpkin beer fan...and of course it's THAT time of year. Yes I appreciate a good 'fest beer, and yes there are some I like (insert Weeping Radish Fest here)...but after 4 weeks of carmel-y-malted-lager-wonderfulness, my humor is gone. Sad timing too because this week we have a veritable raft of great "hooker" beer jokes. Great body, cheap brew, sweet drink, $10 a half-hour....OK so maybe there aren't so many great hooker beer jokes after all. I'm done! Please stop the O'fest madness and bring on the holiday beers. At least Chip mentioned Stone Vertical 8-8-08...a beer I absolutely love. OK Chip...I forgive you for all the 'fests...but only if you can get Grotto to sell Vertical 8 for $2.50 a bottle!

A worn out..."cheers guys..."

WAIT! I just found a great VERY careful doing a google image search on "Hooker Oktoberfest." Ironically enough you get Paris Hilton being banned from Oktoberfest.

Weyerbacher Releases Charlie 10/18 - Brewers Select

16 October 2008

Weyerbacher is releasing their special "Charlie" Brewers Select Series beer this Saturday (10/18) at the brewery. This is a REALLY limited beer (only 25 cases) so it won't last fact it probably won't last the day. This is the third in the Brewers Select series (Alpha, Bravo, Charlie) so we assume Delta is next?

Charlie Details courtesy of Weyerbacher:

Charlie is a beautiful, hefty brown ale at 7.4% ABV and about 10% smoked malt for a very intriguing, pleasant, flavorful beer. We’re not talking in your face “smoked ham” here, just a nice light touch (more than a nuance) that makes this beer very beguiling.

Stegmaier Porter Where Are You?

14 October 2008

As a lover of Stegmaier Porter I've started to ask a few questions. Turns out Stegmaier Porter is a predominantly local beer (i.e. only distributed locally). With that in mind, I started asking myself...other than Lion's Oktoberfest celebration, have I ever seen Stegmaier Porter on tap locally. My answer turned out to be no. So I'll ask all of you. I've seen it in bottles and I know they sell kegs, but has anyone seen it on draft locally (or anywhere else for that matter)? If so when and where?

PS Sabatini's HAS Stegmaier Porter on DRAFT!!!

Lion Brewery - Liebotschaner Cream Ale

11 October 2008

This has been a much discussed topic lately, especially on Lew's blog. As a result I've been asking some questions of some of those @ Lion participating on mybeerbuzz and also some of my other contacts at Lion. Will Lion be brewing Liebotschaner Cream Ale again? Well I'm hapy to report that yes they are considering it but no, at this time they are still only discussing it and no decision has been made.

So lets help Lion your comments here and help them make the decision. I'll let Lion know what activity mybeerbuzz gets relative to Liebotschaner Cream Ale and maybe we can help them make a decision.

Update: This from Leo Orlandini @ Lion (check the comments for details):

One of the brewers from The Lion here! We appreciate all of your positive comments regarding Lieb. We just met this morning regarding the re-launch of Lieb. Everything looks favorable for the re-launch. I will keep you posted.

Chip the Beer Guy Rock 107 - Leinenkugels Oktoberfest

So here's my impression of today's show...

Hello ladies and gentlemen, grotto, our show today, grotto, features a style of beer, grotto, that is traditionally brewed to celebrate the fall, grotto, season in Germany grotto. It features carmel, munich & grotto malts, and tettnang, hallertau, cluster and grotto hops. It comes to us from Chippewa grotto form our favorite Jacob grotto Leinenkugel's. This Marzen lager-grotto-style beer has been around since grotto 2001, and is one of the Leinenkugel grotto seasonal beers. So have we mentioned this is our grotto beer of the week available this afternoon at grotto from $2.50 a bottle at grotto only? The beer has a clean grotto finish, with the traditional grotto oktoberfest flavor and grotto body. The beer is only 5.1% abv so you can enjoy as many as you'd like at grotto.

You get the idea...did you see what I did there, did you? tricky of me huh!!?? So 'fes up guys. Who had a meeting with who and reminded who where the cash-ola for the show is coming from? Hey wait...does grotto sponsor the show?? I'm kidding....very funny and we're very happy to see Grotto Pizza expanding their beer-horizons. Cheers guys!

Lion Brewery Oktoberfest - Day 2

05 October 2008

I thought I'd share one more crappy cell phone picture from the Lion Brewery Oktoberfest. Here's a look at the beer tents and some of the crowd. Thanks again to everyone @ the Lion for a great festival.

Lion Brewery Oktoberfest

04 October 2008

This year's Lion Brewery Oktoberfest celebration was different. For those that remember previous festivals, the caged-in festival area was small and the parking lot was large. This year, what was formerly the parking lot is now the festival area. Food vendors, rides, cigars and yes beer. With beer trailers down the center of the festival and huge tents on both sides, access to the beer was better than ever. Lots of room to walk, talk, eat and drink...and tons of space at the stage. So you're wondering what the deal on beer was? Your $3 admission buys you a 16oz Stegmaier Oktoberfest labeled mug and entrance to the festival. From there "drink tickets" are $1 each. Lion root beer cost 1-ticket ($1), Lionshead and Lionshead Light 2-tickets ($2) and everything else 3-tickets ($3). Now you may be wondering what was "everything else"...well we hit the big beer tents and everything else included Oktoberfest and Midsummer Wit...BUT then we found the small beer tent! Wander down to the far (east) end of the festival grounds and there was a "special" beer tent. Not only did this tent have Stegmaier Porter, Pocono Lager and Pocono Pale Ale...but also a surprise. Legacy Brewing Co out of Reading, who contract brew some of their beers @ Lion were pouring their Hedonism Red Ale, their Midnight Wit, their Euphoria Belgian triple and last but not least their Hoptimus Prime double IPA. Not a bad bargain if you do the math. 16-ounces of 9% ABV 92 IBU Hoptimus Prime for $3. Naturally it kicked by about 8:15PM, but it was nice while it lasted and the Euphoria Red was a great hoppy substitute. Thanks to all the guys at Lion and Legacy for another wonderful Oktoberfest.
